  • Pretty much everyone loves pancakes, but few people enjoy making them. Thankfully, pre-made pancake mix exists to make all of our doughy dreams come true. It's not that pancakes - which are usually just a combination of flour, salt, baking powder, butter, eggs, and milk - are at all difficult to make. But the convenience of having a warm, fluffy pancake that takes minutes to put together is hard to resist. Top it with some syrup and your choice of fruit, and you have all the makings of a hearty breakfast. But which brand should you favor on your next shopping trip? These are the very best store-bought pancake mixes.

I don't agree with their review of Krusteaz mix. They claim it's inconsistent and sometimes too tough. The secret is THE LET IT SIT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE AFTER MIXING. It will rise. Do not mix again when you place it on the griddle. Just take a scoop and place on griddle. Spread it out if necessary. It will be so light, you'll have to put an anchor on it to keep in on the plate.

Hungry Jack Complete is the best of the "just add water" varieties, better than most of the "add eggs, oil, and milk" style mixes. Of course, there is also home-made (flour, sugar, salt, buttermilk, eggs, oil, a splash of vanilla if you hanker for it, baking powder and baking soda, and yes, both baking powder and baking soda are essential to give the best fluffy result). The dry ingredients can be mixed up to a week in advance and stored refrigerated in a sealed jar or air-tight plastic (horrors!) bag. The home-made, properly proportioned, is the best tasting as well as the least expensive.

Okay, these are friggin' pancakes. I repeat pancakes. They don't have to be high-end as your gonna dump syrup on them. Preferably with a couple fried eggs in between cakes with bacon or sausage on the side. Call me simple but I'm a '60s-'70 welfare kid and this was the highlight of our life when the weekend came. Every now and then we got lucky and were treated to a fine dining restaurant that had more than one syrup option. You may have heard of it, it's called IHOP.

@Yourfather1372 I was a child and it was not my choice. My mother had to work two jobs so we kids had to fend for ourselves. One of the first things I learned to make was Bisquick pancakes with the obligatory Aunt Jamima. On a rare occasion, we may have had bacon (Granted it may have been burnt until I got it down. But syrup makes everything better.).

@Yourfather1372 So, as a young mother of three young children you got to do what you have to do to survive. I had to go to the store with food stamps that basically barely covered us. Ate a lot of friggin' beans and PJs. I won't apologize for my circumstances as a child as I had nothing to do with it. If you want to be judgmental so be it, but I'm proud to say that I and my wife of 33 years raised 3- grown kids, and all though there were tough times financially we never too welfare. I also served my country as a Marine and later as a cop and retired.

Sadly, too many big corporate food producers like Betty Crocker and others have been slowly dumbing down our tastebuds. They've been swapping out quality, flavorful ingredients with cheap, tasteless ones in their never-ending quest to save a buck and maximize profit margins. The result is that they dish out flavorless, mediocre food products!
This corporate cheapening process has been occurring for awhile across America's mass-produced food spectrum - and not just in pancake mixes. If you've recently tasted Cracker Jacks, Raisinets, or Tyson chicken (supplier to KFC and many grocery stores), then you've noticed the inferior, regrettable quality of their taste and texture as compared to these same brands about a decade or two ago.
I guess they thought that if they made these ingredient substitutions gradually, we wouldn't notice. But too many of us do - and we'll spend our money elsewhere on better products that actually tantalize our tastebuds.
Instead of maximizing profit shares, their greedy sleight of hand only hurts their branding and drives away customer loyalty. It's a recipe for how to ruin a legacy of deliciousness.

They can be fixed easily by adding vanilla extract half be the water & the rest amount you can add like creamer vanilla as well or plain of best one you like. Even Bliss I like. Yeah Betty Crocker changed. I like sweet with sugar, great smelling. It is best to add your own though. Yes the texture some thing are bad. I liked Bisquick. I liked Annie gummies, but that's it. Expensive. The Mac & chesse no way. I adore water to pearl milling and had to toss it out. Then did water for half mix it says or a cup & less water. It made 3-4 pancakes not 12 so idk what I am doing wrong.

It is obvious many of those pancakes were fried in oil of some variety. Ever notice the many freckled surfaces. A better way to make amazing looking pancakes is to use a dry skillet or griddle and add a table spoon of oil directly into the mix. Very few people will never recognize the oil. Your pancakes will become a single color. 375 degrees seems to be a great temperature. When the bubbles begin to form is a good time to think about turning your pancakes. Sugar should only be added to regulate the browning process. Here is hoping you amaze those gather around your table the next time you fix pancakes. PS! The oil and sugar will enhance those waffles also

I'm getting tired hearing that 'Glutten Free' is a healthy choice, it's not. Glutton intolerance & Lactose intolerance are deficiency's of digestion. Only a Doctor can tell you if you have the conditions. Another way would be to describe how you feel to your Doctor after eating pastries or dairy. Your Doctor must also be notified if you think you want to partake in a vegetarian or vegan nutrition plan. Don't call it a 'Diet', that refers to a temporary nutrition regiment.
I don't use mixes. Bowl, flour & other stuff, mix it up...Done. I use a pinch of Baking Soda which makes a very fluffy pastry of many recipes.
