Yes, Sting said he was always surprised that so many people used this as their wedding song thinking it was a love song when it is about obsession and control over someone

In a booklet- interview for the CD box "Message In A Box" the members state that the band's inner relationships were very strained by then and that they almost lost this song. Drummer Stewart Copeland and Sting say that it was Andy Summer's idea for the guitar part that saved it. Sting also said then that the power it had were the lyrics that can be interpreted either as a romantic song or jealous obsession.

I recently watched a programme called ten songs that don't mean what you think they do. This was one. James Blunt's You're Beautiful is another, both used as wedding songs by people who don't really listen to the words .

You caught the true meaning of this song! In the 80s and 90s, tons of people used this as their wedding first dance song thinking it was a love song! 🤣 Sting - the singer - was always a bit bewildered about that!

I once heard that Sting was concerned about the misinterpreted message of this song, i.e., that some folks thought obsessive stalking was a good thing. They chose to counter this track with another Police hit called, "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free." You should check that one out for contrast.

This song had one of the longest runs at #1 (8 weeks) for the entire decade of the 80's. @Kelly Johnson Find me the quote. These musicians aren't so amateur to be so face value in their lyrics. A 5 yr old could write these lyrics if that was it's true meaning. It's about a spiritual relationship not a physical one. I expect since religion is so taboo today unlike THEN, is why he 'said' so.
It's NOT a stalker song, snap out of the stupor.

    • @lattis8157
      @lattis8157 Před 3 lety +1

@@metoo7557 so you make a claim which goes against everything known about the song. A seemingly very random interpretation at that.
Your only reasoning being that a song cannot possibly be about what the words actually say.
You refuse to provide any evidence of your claim but demand other people provide proof of what everyone knows the song is about.
Yet in the same comment you admit that you won't accept any proof anyway because Sting would lie about what the song means. Apparently because there's some massive taboo preventing people from admitting songs are about religion. Even though there are thousands of very religious songs that no one lies about.
All of this happening even though Sting is agnostic and flat out said he wrote the song about the feelings he had after breaking up with his wife.
I don't get why you're so hung up on this. There are almost unlimited songs actually about faith. Why do you need this one to be? There's no conspiracy. It literally is a song about obsession and Sting himself called it sinister. I don't know why you thought it was about faith or spirituality but it's not. You don't need to be so upset about it.
If you like the song, just enjoy it.

I love the honest reaction and laugh. Yep, it’s a stalker song. One advantage of looking back on music the way you do, is you see and evaluate everything freshly. You are not caught up with automatically accepting everything about a song because the band is “cool” like people in a given time might. So much of people’s identity is often tied to the type of music they like. You just listen, and react. It’s really great.

The meaning behind the song gave me the creeps when it came out for the reasons you said, yet so many didn't listen to all the words and thought it a love ballad? Police are a great band and Sting a wonderful vocalist, I know a lot of youngsters thought he was lovely and had large posters of him, my daughters were more into Northern Soul and Motown lol. I hope you find more of the hits of the Police and Sting to play as I'm sure you will enjoy reacting to them too. God bless you all love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK

This video played almost non-stop on MTV back in the day. There were 4 versions of it, black and white, yellow, red, and blue and MTV just played a different colored version every time. It was not unusual to see this twice within the same hour that way. LOL Red, blue and yellow were the colors for the synchronicity album cover for anyone that wonders why they choose those 3. I always got the fact it was sung from a very painful place, actually, the entire album is pretty dark, and not one of love.
The majority of people don't listen to lyrics though especially when it comes to wedding music. I can't tell you how many weddings I've been too where the bride and her attendants all dance together to "I Will Survive". Always baffled me.

You got it right off the bat! Back when the song came out, the whole stalking thing wasn't much in the public conscience yet. So a lot of people, myself included, thought it was simply a very passionate love song. Obviously, it's not. But it wasn't so obvious back then.
