Love Victorinox knives! For EDC the "Climber" is the best in my opinion. Anything above 3 layers starts getting ridiculous in a front pocket. I keep my Huntsman in my backpack with my Climber as pocket EDC

Felix Immler CZcams channel has great info on uses of the SAK. He shows how to mod them and shows other uses for tools that people might not know.
The Huntsman is my daily carry. I added the Plus scales to mine to get the ballpoint pen slot. The pen comes in handy and was well worth the cost. I also added the mini screwdriver and made a hole to add an extra straight pin in the scale. I can’t imagine going out of the house without my Huntsman.

Been using a Huntsman with translucent red scales since 2006. Been using it as EDC, in the office, around the house, picnics, hunting, hiking, camping, etc the entire time I have owned it. It has never failed me and has helped me in countless day to day urban and outdoor situations. Highly recommended. Have given many of these knives away as gifts over the years. Can’t go wrong with this one.

got a huntsman with the plus scales. adds a pen to the mix as well as a slot for a pin. I put a needle in my slot for repairs. in my corkscrew i added a little screwdriver for my glasses. also put a small bearing into the scale on one side as a bearing block for a bowdrill (idea from felix immler). i try other saks too but always come back to this one.....

Good video, my first Swiss Army knife was a Huntsman way back
In 1972. It has the long nail file and the sharpened curve on the bottle
opener which is what Victorinox did in those days for a wire stripper.
They continued the sharpened curve on the soldiers model into the
1990's. Anyhow I have a special attachment to that model, but recently
got a Farmer X model which is very substantial. It is definitely a trade off
extra features for a more robust build.

the huntsman is a great one knife edc. I do a tiny but mighty manager 2 in my pocket. it covers basic day to day tasks and it lives unnoticed. craftsman in a pouch in my backpack. it comes out for house stuff, art projects with my daughter, prototyping product models for work, and every outdoor adventure.

Many comments I've read agree with my opinion. Too big means carried less. 2 layers is ideal. Quote: The most important knife is the one you have with you. I love camping, hiking, and everything outdoors. Yet, I often wear suits and tuxedos. So my rule is, if you can have it in a tuxedo pocket, and forget you have it, and still cut down a tree... perfect. The Victorinox Camper is my choice. I use every tool daily. In the field, garden, and work and house. Minutes ago I installed a new dimmer switch with no other tool. Yesterday I cut down a limb in the yard and made toggles to sinch and carry bundles of branches. And last week, it was in my tuxedo pocket, opened a man's beer after he realized it wasn't a twist top. I'm sure I used it for many other things too. But I don't remember everything I did as I mindlessly reach for it whenever a task approaches.
I've carried bigger, and often had to decide is it going to be needed today, and you need it, when you leave it behind.
2 layers, is an easy decision.
I suppose the huntsman could be an alternative choice, but the extra tools probably won't get used. Big blade, small blade, saw, canopener, bottle opener, reemer, and corkscrew, wire strippers, tweezers... I use every one of these.

Good review! I suggest adding a Tortoise Gear helix tender to the corkscrew. Also the small screwdriver on the can opener is actually a 2D Phillips driver which no one seems to catch. Great for tightening screws on gear that come loose. The hook is good for twisting loops in wire for trap building in survival situations. Love mine.

when exchanging the scales get the plus scales. They have an extra slot for the pen (also nice for carving projects to mark on wood) and the pin. On some of the plus scales there is an extra slot that you just need to open on the edge of the scale. This would be a slot for the (manually shortened) firefly. I love my victorinox and go nowhere without it. Nice Video, thank you !

Like you I also have the Firefly where the the toothpick would of been. I added 2 of the Helix ( orange ) Tinder's inside the cork screw. This way I have the rod and the tinder to start an emergency fire. For everyday camping fires I use a larger rod. I like the Huntsman for the wood saw. It's a handy tool since I have a backpacking wood burning stove. It's the Firebox Gen 2 titanium Nano. I can burn either alcohol or wood in it.
By the way , the bottle opener on the knife has a small wire stripper area that also works quite well with the Firefly.

Love the Huntsman. With the addition of a wood|metal file it would be beyond perfect. I find the toothpick very useful, though, and I was disappointed you thought it's replacement, the firefly, was so problematic that you chose not to bother using it to start a fire. If you're "selling" the Huntsman (and SAK's in general) then please show us that the firefly actually works.

Leatherman goes in my edc bag but not on my person. I totally get what you say about the weight. In my pockry I'm carrying and Vic Alox Pioneer or a Vic Ranger grip 61 with a nod for a pocket clip if I want a larger blade. I love the Victorinox Pionner by the way. If there was on thing I wish victorinox would do though is find a way to put pocket clips on their knives. Its whyI sometimes go for the heavier Ranger grip cause I know with my clip mode I can secure it in my pocket.

A suggestion: using a file one can square off the front edge of the screwdriver/cap-lifter so that it will throw sparks from a ferro rod, the pressure is then such that there is no danger of the tool closing while striking.

Nice video. I've been carrying for over 65 years. My old man believed that "a man always carries a knife". Including through school. In those days it was allowed. Up through the Army I carried a scout knife. Then for 10 years, an electricians knife. Then I got a Leatherman around '93 and carried it in addition to the knife. When I retired in 2011, I went to a SAK Tinker and am very happy with it.
I do not like the corkscrew because I tried one and it ripped my pocket. If I upgrade, it would be to a Fieldmaster. I have a SAK with a locking blade but it sits with the others in a drawer. You cut yourself? Take a corner off of your Tote N Chip. Good Luck, Rick

Very useful video!!! I love my Huntsman even though I own other knives too. I wanted to ask you how did you prepare the fire starter that you put into the toothpick hall? I mean you creates by yourself and how? it is very useful and I really want to make one!!!

Have you ever used that saw blade for fatwood? I'm wondering how gunked up it gets/ease of cleaning it out if needed.
~~ Screw the corkscrew into a long section of wood/branch to handle, open saw blade..
now one can saw the out of reach branch yer lure is stuck in, out of reach fatwood perhaps?

After hours of research and a lot of deliberation when it comes to bang for your buck, the Huntsman is without a doubt the most powerful of all the Swiss Army compacts in my opinion unless you want to get into the full fledged behemoths like the ever popular Swiss Champ, XXL and XLT, Hercules etc. Especially with the addition of the mini eyeglass drivers or ferro-rod. You want to take it a step further and you can even add some plus scales and add a pen as well if you make the proper modification. Simple, light and easy to toss into a front pocket the only real question is why doesn’t EVERYBODY own one of these little monsters.

Thanks for the info! Really puzzled, though:
Why not demo the teensy ferrocerium rod toothpick replacement with the saw blade, rather than bringing in a turnkey solution -- yet swapping in the saw blade for the built-in striker? Feels unduly contrived.

Because the fero-toothpicks are expensive. I've tested them and they work...if you're skilled.

I have a collection of Swiss Army Knifes, verging on an obsession? From Swiss Champ all the way down to Recruit. Including Huntsman, farmer ×2 which are aimed at outdoors. A explorer, camper more as a city /everyday tool . We all switch from model to model looking for the perfect SAK? I tend towards the very basic Recruit or Tourist along with a Knipex cobra 125mm . If i need a bit more the Angler is my choice the pliers on the Angler is super precision. I rarely use the scissors, i know the scissors is excellent, however a use the small blade in my Recruit/ Tourist, getting used to using the small blade has made me abandon the scissors. So Recruit and Tourist and high days and holidays Angler is my go to . But all need my can opener/ screwdriver MOD is a must .

@@will5184 I have a few videos on my YT channel that will give you some idea . First 6 years ago ' victorinox explorer, huntsman, farmer, climber screwdriver can opener mod ' . Showing how after cutting off the can opener, it still works as a can opner (even better in my opinion).
And a few videos a few weeks ago ' Victorinox Angler Black plus scales and modification ' .
Showing a new Angler with mod .
It is a simple mod basically grind off the can opener and do slight reshaping to produce a small flat screwdriver/ 2d Phillips that can fit into tight spaces, the can opener just gets in the way ,electrical pluge , conecting blocks etc . Have a look and see what you think .

    • @will5184
      @will5184  Před 4 lety

No, the steel of the saw is much harder than the ferocerium rod so the saw is undamaged.
