  • Wild edible warning. DO NOT EAT ANY WILD EDIBLE UNLESS 100% CERTAIN. Some guy on CZcams doesn't count as certain knowledge. WARNING. Catching and cleaning of fish or game is shown. If seeing that is something you are not comfortable with this might not be for you. In this video we attempt to answer the age old question. Which knife, the Farmer or the Hiker is better for survival. Which one is best in a survival situation? To put these two fantastic knives to the test we scrounge up a bush meal using these tools for all the required steps.
Note as this was a comparison of both knives one of the tasks was to test out their ability to be used as a ferro rod striker This is why I used the small blade on the Hiker. However I later found out the back of the saw works great so clearly that's my recommendation for both. Here is a video on that. • Victorinox SAK Saw Fir...

Kevin inspired me in every video. He was very giving with his abundance of knowledge in woodcraft, and to this day I find an occasional video, like this one, that reminds me how unselfishly he lived out his passion, and never showed anything but kindness and cheerfulness. I for one, truly miss, the one, the only Mega Woods Walker.

My EDC SAK is the no longer made Outrider, which has locking blade. Very similar to the Trekker. The Huntsman is my favorite thou. And it saw blade actually saved my life when I was out in the wood and completely tore my patella tendon. That's a long story and for a different time. What I call my Gentleman's carry is the Climber. Everything of the Huntsman but the saw. That my going to the movies, dinner, church knife. I gave Farmers as groomsmen gifts at my weddings. .Nothing better than fresh trout for supper! As usual, great job.

MegaWoodswalker Important to keep the rod contact near the knife handle. The sharp corners of the saw back really whip up a big spark shower.
I don't own a Farmer, but a point to add about alox knives is that for food prep gore doesn't get under the scales. So a plus for hygiene. Both great knives though !

Great vídeo mate. Im a collector of saks and bushcrafter. They are my knives always. I love the farmers for their heavier capabilities, but any will do, really..

Have you tried using the backside of the saw as a striker? Would be an interesting comparison! Seems like that part of the SAK is even less prone to wear or something you might need further ahead on your hike.

I have the Camper, which is a Hiker minus the phillips screwdriver + a corkscrew. I added plus scales so it has an ink pen, straight pin, and eyeglasses screwdriver. It will be my go-to for camping.

You just made me hungry! Great review! The back of the saw blade on either knife works great as a striker for a ferro rod. Put with a fixed blade and a forest axe you are set for camp task.

Hey, I'd recommend pinning the firesteel down in the woodshavings pile when you try to light it. I find it works best than if you hold it in the air, the pressure is not so strong.

Fantastic positive mental attitude, great skills, particularly liked the foraging. Looked very comfortable in your environment, that's a state of mind people undervalue, no use being in the woods if you're scared of getting your hands dirty. I gave up on magnesium bars many moons ago, even a slight breeze makes them difficult to use. Tricky doing a comparison of these knives if discounting the saws, they are incredibly useful. If you live in an area with blackberry bushes tweezers are incredibly useful. The thorns on last years bushes are rotting late winter/early spring and will infect cuts they make if not all the thorn is removed from the cut, so it's Hiker for me (well, I have the Camper, a Hiker with a corkscrew). Thanks for the vid!

I agree with some of the other comments, the back of the saw is the way to go when striking the ferro rod. I actually just learned it and tried it for the first time about 5 minutes ago. Thanks peeps.

Nice mood and I like the enthusiasm. If you really want to strike a rod with an SAK, just try the back of the saw. It has an amazing 90 degree angle and you don’t have to worry about damaging any blade or any other tool on your SAK. Cheers and keep up the happy face 😀👍

    Goodnight Mr. Trout! 3:58
I think maybe the reamer on the Farmer could have also worked for dispatching the trout, if a short blade was needed. It does have an edge. But overall, the Hiker between the two seems better to me cause of having two blades, and also tweezers and toothpick. Just more to work with. The back edge of the saw blade also works for ferro rods, saving your sharp edges on the other tools.
Both, the Hiker and the Farmer seem like great knives, but for outdoors use, I’d get the Camper over the Hiker for the corkscrew it adds. Works great for untying paracord knots and picking out wind knots and backlashes in fishing line.
