microSHIFT ADVENT X Install on my Ritchey Ascent - 10-Speed Upgrade

- On the last few rides with my Ritchey Ascent I found myself wanting to upgrade it from my initial 1x8 drivetrain to a 1x10 with a few more gear options, a wider upper rear cassette range and a bigger and oval front chainring. With the new release of the microShift Advent X drivetrain I thought now was the perfect time.
If you have not seen the restoration of this bike check out the two links below. The first is just after I got the frame and did a quick build of it. The second is a full restoration/mod of the bike to the way it is set up for this ride.

It's like a T-ford with a Hemi under the hood. Brilliant.
As a old pro mechanic from the late 80s to the early 2000s this really tugs at the heart.
The good old days are back. Ride, just ride, enjoying the moment!
Amen
I love when old bikes go 1x, it makes such a dramatic improvement in real world functionality and brings new life to the bike while maintaining an old school vibe.
Agreed
I wish my old bike was 1x
Micro shift getting a lot of good reviews.
See a need, fill a need.
I have the 9 spd version and it is well made. Shifts great, feels good. Only complaint I have is an ergonomic one with the shifter. The trigger shifter lever is too short so I have to adjust my grip to reach it. Thumb lever is right where it needs to be. It looks like the Advent X solves that issue. I hope they will rework the 9 spd shifter. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
I just got the group set for My Gt Aggressor I love it
You entire video is so pleasant, from the low music to the way you explain things. Not to mention, you taking us on a ride. Instantly subscribed.
Awesome thanks 🙏
So calming, almost Hypnotic. Thank you for sharing.
What a nice work to transform an old MTB with a new gear system. A custom scene is born.
Really great. 😃👍
Best Wishes from germany and stay well
Another great video. Love watching these builds and mods while sipping my morning coffee. Calm and relaxing vibes, which sometimes get lost in the sport of mountain biking. Cheers!
Warms my heart. Thanks
I’m really liking this set up. I have an old 93 stump jumper and this looks like the way to go.
Modern gearing and Retro looks, best of both worlds. Keep up the great work, inspiring stuff.
Having fun with it that’s for sure. Good to hear from you.
I really loved your editing and video style. Keep up the good work!
Another fine piece of work and you have a great place to ride. Great edit work!
I love your videos. They have pushed me to giving new life to my in-laws 90s frames. Thank you!
Lol awesome
In May I will inherit my daughters bike she has had mostly outside at college for 4 years. Looks like an old Shovel rebuild coming. Keep up with the Good Work!
I can't get over how good that Paul's stuff looks. Great video!
I know right. So awesome. Thanks
This was a really great watch. I loved the narration and the music edits as well as the Advent X tutorial. Thanks you.
Stoked on this. Converting my Salsa this week from a 2x8 to a 1x10 with the Advent X groupset and the N/W Wolftooth Oval but going with 38t.
Love how you say "Ciao". Hello from Italy!
There's those beautiful Paul brake levers. I should get rid of my 44 t ring off the front ,I am getting too old and out of shape lol . The anodized cassette looks cool ,man that ritchey is all ready for me now . Haha lol thanks old shovel
I'm loving the thumb shifter, I've always wanted one, it looks so cool
Beautiful bike and beautiful video, great vibe and energy, I really drift off in my mind to someplace with flowing singletrack and soulful bikes. Sending love from wintery uk
I love the vintage steel mountain bikes and recently purchased a Dirt Research Kenai with Columbus EL-OS tubing. Tom Teesdale designed it and he has great history in the development of mountain bikes. Looking forward to doing a 1xsetup with it.
Nic job. I did not know that Microshift came out with the X. I went with a Microshift 1x9 on Bridgestone MB4. I really enjoyed it. Great music on this one.
That was great upgread !
Am happy to see u more take care !
i dont know why but this video is like poem. sad and hopeful. 👏👏
such a beautiful way to keep the Old good in their Glorious time.
I just build up a Peugeot Versaille, and set it up as a MTB Travel bike with a front rack.
Its such a Beautiful ride I love it! I wish I could get my fingers on one of your bikes would be rad!
hier trifft man nur die korrektesten. gruß aus hh
Totally doing this to my 03 Giant Ranier and my '97 Cannondale Los Dos Tandem.
Thanks for the video. I just purchased that derailleur, and was trying to figure out a cassette. I'm going to try it out.
Cool. Awesome want to also try out their 11-48. Perhaps on another build. 😁
It's cool that the cassette comes with the link for the derailleur, even if you don't need it with the Advent X. I just ordered a Wolftooth one for 11-36 on an Tiagra rear der. rated for like 30T or something. It 'worked' without it but not smoothly. For my MTB though, I just got the Advent X der. and shifter and 11-48T cassette/32T NW ring, going from 24-32-42 and 11-36 I only lost the 2 highest gears in the big ring (in terms of range).
Love my $10 micro shifter. Simple and it works
Those trail shots really make me miss Utah.
I just got a sweet deal on a brand new Ritchey Ascent frameset. I can't wait to start building it up.
Awesome
The perfect video to watch before I put back together my trek 950 singletrack
Love Sunrace! I found a Sunrace add in an old MTB mag from 1994...
Thanks for the riding footage
Have Micro Shift shifters on my vintage klein and love them because i can run my vintage cranks with a 10 speed in the back
Things can only get better!
I've been waiting weeks hoping someone would review this. Thank you.
I’m looking forward to giving them some good riding.
@@oldshovel Looking forward to hearing about it.
Russ at Path Less Pedaled also has a review...
Oval chainring, Microsoft clutch rear, Microshift friction, Ritchey steel, 26" ... stop copying me! But seriously, it's like we're long lost riding buds. Thank you internet for the e-connection to a kindred spirit.
Awesome my friend, awesome.
..good one, hot rodders are the same on 2 wheels or 4..lol..great vid..enjoy and keep safe..
I'm shopping for a new drivetrain for my old Specialized P2. I just learned about the Microshift and it seems really decent. I think I'll go with the 9 speed and bring a bit of new life to my ride.
Nice build, is jealous of your trails
Thanks
So satisfying
love the review. Great music too
sweet build!
Your film making is superb
A mix of retro-ish MTB shifting technology with some great up-to-date components at it's best.
After all, what's better than having a 1x10 groupset on a timeless frame with a thumbie for the shifter.
Thank you for posting. Uber pleasant.
I've got the Advent x group on my XC and Enduro bikes. Just got one on my ebike but got the steel cassette for that one. It's that good.
Such a relaxing video. I always save your videos in Watch later list for a time I have a good dinner to eat :)
Awesome
Thanks for doing this. I just pulled the trigger on the micro shift 9-speed group set. There's not a whole lot of reviews out there but I enjoy seeing more people especially yourself say good things about them as a company.
I loved that 8 speed thumbie and look forward to exercising the 10 speed with the advent x
Ok ok, you convinced me. I will upgrade my old mountain bike 😀
Parabéns pelo seu trabalho Man tudo de bom
Nice to see that rigid off road bikes are still appreciated. I'm mostly riding on path and pavement places and I see road bikes, bitchin beach cruisers, and mountain bikes that sometimes have dual shocks. Those rigid mountain bikes could do it all better with just a change in tires.
I have the Advent 9 speed groupset up on my 95 GT. I find it’s got the perfect amount of gear for me. It’s a quality set for a good price.
I look forward to more riding on it. It’s a fun setup.
+1 for 9 speed I'm on 7 at the moment but will upgrade to 9 when I can😊✌
Great job,I love Microshift thumbies but couldnt fit them to one of my modern bikes as I use new Shimano brake levers and their reservoirs foul the thumbie.Pity.
love microshift, just installed their 1x7 drop bars levers on my old bridgestone frame. Great video as usual!
Awesome thanks
Nice! Do you need a road derailleur for that or is it working with mtb as well?
@@schninzent8914Thanks! Threw on a shimano acera mtn bike rear der. The pull ratio for shifting is what worried me with drop bars, but it works awesome
@@jorgscz9175 Great! I have an old 1x7 mtb with slicks on it just for city riding. I might convert to drop bars now. Thank you very much!
@@schninzent8914 dude so awesome, slicks are great
Well, that's great upgrade! :)
Can see you getting a lot of views for this one, there's a lot of interest in the Advent X drivetrain of late... initially seems ideal for people who want a modern wide range one-by drivetrain without the Shimano/SRAM price tag. Might be good to do a follow up video in a month or so to give us your views on how well it's performed compared to the usual suspects :)
How about an update on the kona and the Hudson bay bike.. those 2 are my favorite of your builds..
Nicely done
Thanks
come sempre... ottimo video! Ciao!
Damnit. Now I wanna convert my single speed back to geared....
Lol 😂
Another great video 👍🇬🇧
Thanks
new, or, different watch....nice
Wow a 10 speed, looks great, Esspecially the red on the gears! 1-10 what would you rate it? 😁🚲
Very nice upgrade :-)
That seems perfect to me, it was obvious that with so much new mechanics you had to update that bike beauty of the legend Richy bike.now I have a 26 wheeled canondel and now I want to do the same on it, could you give me an estimate of how much I can do that same job on my bike greetings and God continue to bless you in
Oval are great for old knees ;)
Excellent review thanks, I just installed the Advent X system on my Trek Marlin 7 I have a 36 tooth chainring in front I really like the way it shifts makes the bike way quieter than the 3x9 it came with. I have one issue it will not shift to the lowest gear the big ring in the back? I followed Micro shift's directions on chain length but I think it may be too short so I will try adding some links.
Nice Restomod
Love watching your videos, I'd like to ask you a question, I have a 1992 specialized hard rock, it will need a full over haul and a good bit of money out into it but the steel frame and paint job is amazing. Would you say it is worth the time and money?
I love Microshift. I just wish it came in silver!
Just remove all the colour and leave it
With this covid lockdown, all my earnings and savings gone to zero, now all i can afford is this video.
Looks like Microshift has managed to release a nice product!
Microshift already has good products tbh. But IMO only.
@@carlodominiclu2609 , it's not only your opinion, it's also a fact! Microshift has been around for awhile now, and have always produced durable, solid products.
This microshift group interests me... But for the moment, I've a SLX 1x11 group on my Ritchey P23 😊
Ooooo the P23 is so awesome... with a 1x11 sounds sweet!
Cool!!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
From Spain...we are in quarentine and your video make me to miss more go out with my bike....Nice video, thanks a lot
Thanks and stay safe.
thanks for the video. How about back peddling in the low gear?
v cool. thanks.
Advent has a new 11/46 10 speed cassette too at a ridiculous low weight
Top de mais parabéns...
Fantástico!
Awesome build! What thumb shifter did you use? I’ve heard advent x derailleur has really specific cable pull.
мне никогда не нравилась манетка микрошифт .но вот этот задний переключатель выглядит просто офигенно
awesome video! do you think I can run a 11-42 using an old Shimano LX whit is shifter?
Cool 😱😱😱
love your videos. did the road-link derailleur extension come with that cassette?
Yes it did but with the Advent X derailleur I didn’t need it.
Excelent
What were your thoughts about prefering the Sunrace 11-46 cassette over the Adventx 11-46 cassette? Is it better, nicer or more long lasting than the Microshift cassette?
No issues with the microshift and the sunrance cassette pairing together? I was hesitant to use anything but the microshift 11-48 but it was hard to find right now. Good to know for the future.
Nice....thanks 👍🇫🇷⭐⭐⭐⭐
Note that Microshift says their derailleur is direct mount only so sccording to spec you should install that sunrace adaptor that came with cassette. How does it shift outside the stand?
How do you fit freehub rear wheels on older steel frames? The sizing of new 26 inch wheels are like 135 mm hubs but my 1983 mountain bike has 120 mm spacing for a 5-speed freewheel.
Hi, thanks for this and all your videos, they are fantastic.
I have a 7 speed '93 Diamondback Response Elite - will this upgrade work or not? I seem to recall reading the hub has to be 8 speed or higher. Thanks!
Yes you would need a new rear wheel to make it work or swap the hub (like I did on the Raleigh Chill)
oldshovel thanks!
My bike has a Sean 2 * 10 and I want to change it for a 1 * 12 with an oval on the front
The chainring from Wolftooth is one of the few narrow wide available in 5 bolts, but it is super expensive (79EUR). In 4 bolts, you can get one for 7EUR on Aliexpress (search for Motsuv), I use BDSnail one in anodised purple in 4 bolts (around 15EUR). If people are interested, I also found a NOS stock of 5 bolts 94BCD chainrings in different colors left at KitCross.com, a belgian manufacturer of motocross accessories, I used their chainrings on my 1995 bike and needed to replace one that was bent.
I know. It’s hard to find an affordable 110 bcd x 5 oval. Awesome love how this bike rode, and I always want to ride it so I felt it was worth the cost.
Wouldn't it be better to use a trigger shifter?
Yes, but can you out ride a changing bear?
