  • In Texas, where the unofficial state motto is "the bigger, the better", a war over high school football stadiums is playing out off the field.
One school district spent $60m on their arena. The action it has got people wondering if the money could have been better spent elsewhere.
Al Jazeera's Heidi Zhou-Castro reports from Allen, Texas.

Why does no one explain how funding works in Texas. We literally can't spend more on education. We are taxed to the max, and actually, part of our tax dollars (for teachers, et al) are redirected to poorer schools. The athletic complex (more than just a stadium) is an entirely separate funding source; separate tax. The two revenue streams, by state law, cannot be shared.

Allen High School is the single largest high school in all of Texas, and one of the largest in the United States with about 6,300 students 9-12. The voters who approved the stadium barely saw any tax increase individually because there are almost 100,000 residents in Allen; they also have the largest marching band in the world with over 800 members. Allen ISD also is one of the highest performing districts in Texas as well. McKinney ISD spent $10million more on their stadium, but it holds far less people and will not be nearly as big as the Allen one lol.

Second, these are not poor towns lol they have money to do what with the way they want to, but before you get all high and mighty about the "education" these are not bonds that are for the stadiums only these schools get major upgrades to there facilities and help pay for quality teachers.
In the end you can be made at Federal and state officials on not doing more in education but these stadiums are voted on and paid for by the tax payers of there cities. You dont like it, to bad you dont live there.

Sports revenues allow middle class people a shot at an elite education. UCLA, Univ of Texas, Univ of Michigan are excellent schools because they make tons of cash off sports, which go to fund research projects, high-end lab facilities and some of the best libraries in the world. If they relied on merely tax dollars and donations, they'd be ramshackle schools.

This reporter needs to understand and report how the tax funding works before she reports on it. Also, understand that Allen is an affluent city with some of the best schools in the state not to mention some of the best paid teachers in the state. She also needs to report that the bond package that was passed was for $120 million of which half went into the fine arts program that benefits several thousand of the students.
Do some research and a better job of reporting the facts.

Factually they have one of the best school districts in America. Not surprisingly they try to bring up the "think about the children" tactic, which again goes back to my previous remark that the education is doing great in Allen. And what about the people who are losing their houses due to property taxes. Is Texas going to take the houses from people who lost their jobs due to manufacturing going to foreign countries? Is Texas going to take the houses from people who are disabled but cannot afford the Property Taxes that have been raised to build these stadiums? Yes, Texas and every other state in the United States has been taking peoples houses and building stadiums. The local governments are regularly taking people's homes because they lose their jobs or become sick or disabled. They use the property tax as a method to tell you that you do not, nor ever will own your home.
What is Social Security? Social Security is when people are allowed to buy their own homes for their own security in their old age. But why are people paying for Social Security when the county takes their homes to build and operate a football stadium. So they are sacrificing both Education and Social Security to build these stadiums and at the same time they are taking your house for pennies on the dollar and selling your homes to their friends, all of which is totally against the Constitution.
I'm a disabled vet and they were going to take my home for a mere $8,000. The Take Notice said that I can come to the hearing but I cannot redeem my home. When I spoke to the Tax Assessors Office, they said that they will take everything, including my books, TV, furniture, clothing, vehicles and everything, plus send my dogs to the pound. This is Terrorism at it's finest. When the fat man in the grand stands says that it is worth it for building the stadium, but let us see that fat man go without food or a place to live knowing that the money that the county used from it's Property Tax went so a bunch of under educated kids can play ball.
In a town near me, a town of 500 people, there were 17 tax notices sent out and these homes are being stolen for the profit of people who have enough money to pay the taxes. The Constitution says that we have Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. That's in the Preamble. But the very first thing we need for life is shelter, then water, then food. With the Property Tax issue, your own government is taking the life from each one of you so the rich kids could play football.
I remember when I wanted to play in High School. They said that I had expenses for uniforms and other things. I'm sorry, my mom and I lived in a house that was eight feet by thirty five feet and we would have a can of tomato soup for dinner. We couldn't afford the football equipment so I didn't get to play. Why didn't the county give us poor kids free uniforms, we have the right to play too. But what is really happening? The county is taking the houses from those same poor people and selling them to the rich people so that the rich people can rent those same houses out to other poor people. This is criminal. It's called Theft, Extortion, Intimidation, and Terrorism against anyone in the U.S. that owns a house and cannot pay their ever increasing tax bill. Tell that to that fat guy who thinks that it's worth it. I was a skinny kid who grew up with hand me down pants and holes in my shoes.
