- inov-8 RACE ULTRA PRO 5 VEST First Impressions Review. Happy Halloween, folks! Over the years I've run in lots of different running vests and packs from brands like Salomon, Ultimate Direction, Nike, Camelbak, Harrier Trail and inov-8. Some have performed really well and some not so well (mentioning no names... Nike Trail running gilet - total rubbish!). I've been hearing good things about the current inov-8 hydration vests so it was great when the guys from inov-8 contacted the channel and asked if we'd like to test and review their Race Ultra Pro 5 Vest. If I'm honest, when using their running vests in the past, they have left me a little bit disappointed, so hopefully this one will perform better. Check out the review to see my first impressions!

Great review, as always. I've got two inov8 vests and have always loved them for their comfortable, no bounce fit and especially for having the bottles low down. I find it works really well for my body shape. My pet hate have always been the very narrow pockets on the straps at the front which are a complete pain for getting things in or out. It looks like that's been changed for this vest which surely must mean I'll need to put it on my Christmas list!

It is a very comfortable vest that's for sure and you are right about the narrow chest pockets. I think that's why I'm going to move the bottles from the low down side pockets to the chest ones. This will then allow me to use the big stuff pockets and the big zip pockets underneath the stuff pockets on both sides 👍 Thanks for watching and supporting the channel its really appreciated 🙏
For anyone interested... I've had this vest for 2.5 years now. Completed several ultras up to 100km and thousands of training km's wearing it and I can't fault it really *see below though....
It's listed as 5L but trust me, it will take far, far more. I think the 5L rating is for the storage area on the back, but I reckon you can get another 5L into the various pockets.
*I wear mine with the bottles in the front pockets (like a Salomon vest), the ONLY downside to this I have found is that the zipped front pocket (the grey one with the INOV8 logo on it) becomes a little redundant as you can't really fit anything into it. Similarly, the pocket on other side (the black flexi pocket in front of the bottle) can only really be used for gels, and then you have to take them out to get the bottle back in.
I tried the bottles in the side pockets like in this review but I didn't like it.
Other than that little gripe, there is literally nothing to fault with the vest.
The two meshed pockets on the side/bottom will take loads of "stuff". I use them for gels, food, buff, glasses, etc. The two zipped pockets on the front/side (the ones where you can put the bottles) I use for my phone, sun lotion, vaseline, more food, compass, etc.
All of my waterproofs, headtorch, batteries and spare clothing go into the rear pocket, whilst any maps, first aid go into the lower velcro'd pocket on the rear. This still leaves the little zipped pocket on the rear empty as I have nothing to go into it.
The two pockets near the top of the vest on the front are used for the speedcup, keys and some spare cash (just in case).
2.5 years in and it's starting to look a little grubby but still 100% intact and probably has another year or two of life left in it.

You’ve excelled yourself with your Halloween extras! 😱 lol 😆….. I’ve used my Inov-8 race vest for 5yrs now and it’s still as good as new. I use the long straws and side pockets for my bottles and have never had a problem with fitting everything in. Never bounces or causes any discomfort over any distance…. Did yours not come with the ‘zombie’ knife attachment?? 🤣

Hi Lloyd - can I ask how you find the breathability? I find it makes my back so sweaty! This might be true of all vests but I have nothing to compare it to as the Inov8 is my first one. There is also some stitching that rubs on my collar bone which is a bit annoying. But I love how the vest fits and as a woman I like you can have the bottles in the bottom pockets. Great review as always 👍🏻
You'll alway get a bit warmer with a pack or vest on Sarah. I wouldn't say the Inov-8 vest is any less breathable than any of my other packs 👍

Did I imagine it or did you previously mention a new Nitecore trail running headtorch that's coming out soon? I really need to settle on a new torch but don't want to commit if there's something new on the horizon!
There is a Nitecore hu60, but read online that it's very unreliable, as quality seems to have slipped of late.
I went with the Nicron H25 and I'm very happy with it.
Yes that's right Zen there's a new trail running headtorch from Nitecore on its way that's been specifically designed for trail Ultra running. It's called the UT27 and it's got some great features, good output and burntime. My review should be up on the channel soon but unfortunately there's been a delay in manufacturing so I can't give you a release date? I have just bought the Fenix HM65r-T and it is outstanding.
Not only is it ridiculously bright (up to 1500l) but at mid brightness (400) it lasts 12 hours.
Plus its fully waterproof and drop tested.

@@Run4Adventure 😜👻... well... but got over it 🤭 I have the same vest as I have seen Liga uses (S-Lab) and there I don't like that it has 2 compartments at the back instead of a bigger single one... and it cannot be closed... so I think Inov-8 did a real good job 👍
Hi, as a newbie to poles, can I ask how to you tighten the bungee for poles as mine just seems to bounce out .
Hi Loyd. If you had to pick between the Inov-8 Ulta Pro 5 vest and the Salamon active Skin 8 which one would you choose? If you’ve carried another top in your pack do you keep it in a bag? The pack I use at the moment is a level entry one and sweat from my back goes through the material of the pack.
I would go for the Inov-8 ultra Pro 5 if I had to choose between the two Steve. I put everything I put in the back in a 3L dry bag to keep it all dry. I'd also recommend checking out the Salomon Advance 12 set 👍

Because of the niggles and injuries I haven't been able to do any long runs. I'm still waiting to get some decent mileage in wearing the Inov-8 vest and once I have I will be doing a full review and there won't be a Zombie in sight this time 🧟♂️😂
