If you like the League of Legends game, you might like Therapy
*need
Accurate
nah, therapy cant help someone too far gone.
I do in fact go to therapy
Pretty hard disagree here! The economic model is trash, paying like 50€ at least for one hour of gameplay, and depending on the server you’re in, you have to wait whole month for very inequal experience depending on the GM that lead the game.
Plus i more often than not don’t rage, this is nothing like LoL, i want my pool of salt to fall in whenever i want for free.
But had to agree that when it’s good it reaches peak if emotions: 6/10
Mistborn would seriously be incredible if it was ever adapted into an animation like Arcane
I made a post about this on r/Mistborn. The fandom agrees mostly. But, But... Warbreaker would work far better with this animation style.
@@lutherffs why would warbreaker be better?
@@lutherffs Why not both? 🤷♂
Stormlight would also be good animated, if only that's the only way you could practically adapt it loyally.
Im not saying Mistborn wouldn't work but Brando is pretty set on having that done live action so it's more realistic and more flattering of the magic system to have Warbreaker done as an arcane animation style movie.
Dude this is awesome. I love the idea of having people broaden their horizons. I really hope this becomes a recurring video format. Broadening horizons and love and acceptance should definitely be the goal of the goblin horde.
I've read Gideon The Ninth myself last year and I totally agree with the similarities there. I'm intruged to check out some of the others. I had already planned to read The Green Bone Saga and Ashes Of The Sun soon anyway.
I'd love to see an "If You Liked ..." series from you every now and again.
I hope you enjoy the green bone saga, I just finished it a couple of mo the ago and I think is fantastic
I have Gideon The Ninth in my to buy list, hopefully I'll get to it soon
Haven't read it but I chuckled at the line: "Lesbian Necromancers in space"
definitely adding it on my (way too long already) tbr list
@@yasielromero8236 Ah thank you, I hear all around praise for The Green Bone saga so I'm sure I will like it.
I highly recommend reading Gideon The Ninth as soon as you get the chance. It jas to be in my top 5 best reads last year and the main character herself is a breathe of fresh air and turned into one of my favourite protagonists pretty quickly.
@@benjaminhondorp8593 Haha, it's just as 'out there' as it sounds aswell. Definitely worth adding to the list.
@@SparkAce1 thanks for the recommendation, you just bumped the book quite a few steps up in my tbr list
Finished vid, immediately opened amazon, bought Sword of Kaigen. Very intrigued!
I just finished rereading Mistborn 1-3 and I'd LOVE to hear more about the parallels you mentioned. If you ever want to work with an Arcane focused channel, I've been a fan of yours for years and I'd love to collab. Keep up the awesome work! :D
Hey! I love your Arcane analyses videos. Huge fan of the channel! I left a comment recently about how Daniel missed one of the biggest draws of Arcane (imo): the making of Jinx--i.e., the villain origin story. If Daniel doesn't do that, you totally should! (You totally should even if he does.) With your in-depth analyses of Arcane, I'd be curious to hear what other media you'd recommend based on a variety of dimensions (e.g., setting, character development, morally grey characters, villain origin story, etc).
I’ve been binge watching both of your channels as I’m finishing my most recent writing project. I’ve gained so much insight from you both. Love you guys
It is the closest thing to Arcane narrative design wise, as it follows the same hamartia-anagnorisis-peripeteia-catharsis structure of classic greek tragedy. Which is btw quite likely deliberate: there is a reason why Jinx's ship in her alternate reality trailer is called Odyssey.
Mixing genres that seemingly have no connection can lead to some pretty intresting outcomes.
Recently I've been reading something that's a combanation of cyberpunk and lovecraftian fantasy, it's pretty awesome.
Oh sounds interesting. What’s the name of the title?
@@Kintaro0e Sorry it's not in English, it's a Chinese web novel. the title has a very light novel style too, it's basically the premise of the story, many readers say it's kinda cliche and tacky lol.
This is actually an incredibly smart compromise between the CZcams algorithm and people who want more book content, using something popular and fresh to transition to a discussion of similar books. I like it!
Honestly i would love an animated adaptation of many fantasy novels. I feel like the medium is just better than live action at shoeing the full context that might otherwise be lost in a live action adaptation.
Also helps scenes or stuff that might seem cringe or just bad in live action, such as a lot of magic
I think this especially applies to fantasy stories with 'flamboyant' magic systems or extremely fantastical world building. Animation allows much more creative freedom to bring such things to life than live action ever could.
@@DenDave_ Exactly. I think one of the things that for example made the Lord of the Rings movies possible was specifically the Soft magic system of the books. Where as something like the Wheel of time that has a more solid magic is better when there is a great amount of creative freedom
This is exactly why Coraline worked so well in stop-motion.
totally agree, animated series would be the ideal format for adapting most of the fantasy series I love but live action is the hot ticket
Loving the new character of Dr. Hardtruth!
Same here. I kind of needed his wisdom to be honest. I agree with what he said, but it's definitely hard not to just recommend the entire Cosmere.
This seems like a great series! I hope you continue doing it Daniel!
I like the idea for a series called "Like That, Try This".
Great video. I have already updated my TBR list with a few more titles.
Good name, but I think “like this, try that” rolls of the tongue a little better (since “this” comes before “that” most of the time)
@@Xob_Driesestig now that I think about it, I think that you are right. Opinion changed.
And they say people on the internet aren't able to change their minds.
I'm just glad to finally see Daniel talk about Mistborn again
Dorohedorho is basically exactly what someone would be looking for.
Noi best girl!
Thank you so much for this video! I just finished binge-watching Arcane the other day and I got so hooked. I really enjoy the steampunk sci-fi fantasy genre of the series, Jinx's punk and Joker-like vibes, and the queer rep and character development. Those are elements I'm really looking for, and I appreciate the variety of recs based on POV, setting, moods, and themes that you're giving here. Gideon the Ninth has been on my list for a while and it's honestly one of my most anticipated right now, so I'm glad that one came up. Definitely gonna check out the others!
Dear Mr Greene, the Ketty Jay series is probably my favourite book series ever, and probably the series that got me into the genre. I would very much like a review of this series on your channel. Yours sincerely, a long term subscriber and book recommendation junky of your channel. Ps I just bought Shadow of the Gods, thanks for hurting my wallet.
I will say that future seasons, and future Riot projects in the animation front, will likely be a lot more close to the "sprawling epic" thing you mentioned. The world of Runeterra, where League's IP takes place, is an absolutely massive world and Arcane S1 already got hints of bringing some of that in, what with Noxus showing up. It's very likely that could become more prevalent later on
This is a great idea for a series. Hopefully we get more. I’ve browsed past a couple of the lesser-known books mentioned before on audible while looking for new reads but now I’ll have to double back.
The characters of Arcane are entirely what enraptured me with the series. As much as I enjoy discussing the concepts and ideas from people like Niven or Clark, characters and character work are really what pull me info a fiction and it can be hard to find. Especially with non-traditional protagonists.
Oh HELL yeah, time to make my TBR balloon up like a snorlax at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
I actually read Gideon the Ninth around the same time I watched Arcane last year. I loved both, and after Gideon I got into the mood for something like it, but I just couldn't find anything. But the show Arcane was one of the few things that did fit that mood somewhat. I have a suspicion the murderbot diaries would also be a good book to read after Gideon the Ninth, but I just haven't picked it up yet.
The biggest takeaway I took away from Arcane was hey make Mistborn look like this. Didn't love the plot, but the animation was *chef's kiss*.
Also Sword of Kaigen is amazing read it
Love the concept of this series, and I believe that fantasy wise you truly are the person who can give good recommendations.
Awesome video! Looking forward to checking some of these out!
Killing it as always! I super admire your creativity and commitment to the punch line "in the same vein" - seeing your face slide up a stock vein video was something I didn't know I wanted or needed until now haha
Loved this format, can’t wait to see more of them in the future! Would love to see ones based on manga too eg Berserk, as someone who wants to introduce friends to both mediums
I love “if you liked that, try this” videos. When you take in a piece of media and it hits your soul so hard and you just need that fix to curb the withdrawal while you wait for the next season/book/film/etc…. uuuuuhh~
Another great similar text is Scott Lynch’s The Lies of Locke Lamora / The Gentlemen Bastards series. It’s more of an alchemical fantasy world as compared to steampunk but it had some really interesting world development that reminds me of Arcane. Also Scott Lynch just has a really distinct voice within the text that really stylizes the world and characters. Highly recommend it!
Thank you from the bottom of my soul because I've been searching for similar-to-Arcane book recs for months 😭
I definitely want a "If you love Braking Bad, read this"
you shouldn't drive if you love "braking bad"
It would be a nice surprise but sadly now the show lost traction because its old so I don't expect it :(
@@Kraumyke I highly disagree with that. I didn't like Breaking Bad surprisingly, but I still see it everywhere. That show isn't gonna lose traction or leave the public eye anytime soon, especially with Better Call Saul as big as ever right now.
@@milesstone7032 I mean you're right it is "everywhere" but it doesn't have mainstream attention imo. Thus the only BrBa content creators are only memers or people who make good videos but it don't get noticed... I'm not saying memes are bad or anything I found out about the show thru memes myself but I wish there were more in depth analysis videos lately
Love the idea of this type of video. I often find myself looking for other things in a similar lane as something I really enjoyed. There are surprisingly few books that I'm aware of that are doing similar things to Arcane so it's interesting to hear some recommendations.
I happened into Gideon the Ninth just after I watched arcane (it was a “ooo nice cover I’ll just buy that” thing), and I loved it. It was the first thing that made me actually really excited after Arcane. (And I read poppy war in between them. Still loved it just was a little…long? But I can do wot so I don’t know, just maybe not enough slow burn mystery…but there was some in poppy war)
But the thing is I wouldn’t really recommend it. The mystery is great. Harrow and Gideon are great. Ianthe is great. (Loved htn too). It takes a moment to adjust to the prose for me, and some spots were kind of hard to read. It’s weird. The tone, in my opinion, is all over the place because of the humor juxtaposed against everything else (even though I liked it). And it’s honestly just weird. Especially htn, (2nd person…everything, with that book). Maybe I’d recommend it to some long time readers who are getting a little bored, but I can’t see myself recommending this to people as their first look into science fiction fantasy lol.
Great idea for a new series Daniel! Please do more! Several of these are on my TBR and I cannot wait to read them. Wanted to give The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher as a possible pick for this list.
100% agree on Aeronaut's Windlass
Please please please more of these! this summer I really plan to read a handful of fantasy and respect your opinion, so would love any and all recs for a newbie
Yes!! I would love to see a "if you liked..." video format, specially if you go from something like from a show/movie to a book.
Agree with your criticism of Retribution Falls - I'd still recommend reading the sequels. The first book was a bit rough, especially early on, but the following books just go from "this was fun" to "this was incredible". They keep the fun aspect, and at the same time make the characters much deeper and more engaging. Definitely fits with the "if you like Arcane" imo!
Would definitely be interested in more of this series!
Daniel you disheveled Goblin you, I want to thank you. I was in a book drought for a few years then I found your channel and now I have books coming out of places medical staff recommend they do not come out of.
Thank you my friend!
Awesome idea for a series, definitely added a few to my TBR! Would love to see your take on different series as well.
Really great and helpful format, I really craved for book with the similar emotional tone after watching Arcane. Added Sword of Kaigen and Gideon The Ninth to TBR
I didn't know these type of vdieos didn't make money for Daniel. Thank you for making it.
This a great video idea! Hopefully it’s a way to review/recommend books that will please the algorithm
Gideon The Ninth & Harrow The Ninth were both great. Cant wait for the 3rd book.
I am thrilled to see Retribution Falls mentioned. The audiobook was phenomenal; loved the way the reader captured the voices, to the point that they all felt very distinct. It also made me rethink character voice in my own stories, to really hammer home how different they can be.
I love Arcane-punk or magic-tech-punk. There is really not enough of that.
Great video! I'd love to see a companion piece to this, like some possible recommendations for people that didn't like Arcane.
PLEASE do more videos like this, for just random popular TV shows/movies/games. I think it can really help people find books similar to the "more popular" media that most people seem to get into. I think it'd be an important step forward for sure.
Simply because it's in the same world (Runeterra), I would recommend the upcoming Ruination. Though it seems to be about Viego and his kingdom, so it will likely be dark fantasy with a more standard setting than urban steampunk.
Just read Gideon a few weeks ago! Absolutely loved it. Can’t wait to continue the series 😁
Great video! I’m frequently hunting for books that remind me of certain shows/movies and I can definitely see many people wanting books with similar vibes to Arcane. Loved the recs too, Django Wexler has been on my tbr for so long, but if fans say his books have arcane vibes I might have to bump them up on the list 🤔
Perdido Street Station is actually what popped to mind for me too. The third in the trilogy, Iron Council, fits even better I think.
Mr. Goblin sir, I hope you are still planning to start the second in the trilogy (The Scar) soon since it's a straight up pirate adventure.
Great idea for a video. Definitely going to read a couple of these.
And thanks for including the "obvious" ones because I never thought of them lol.
Excellent recommendations!
I definitely support this new type of "if you liked this, then check this" video! One can never have enough awesome books to read, after all.
You are a great worder Daniel.
i have been waiting for this
I've actually been looking for recommendations like this because I loved Arcane. I only finished Robert Jackson Bennett's Foundryside (1st in a trilogy) today but so far I think an Arcane fan would like this.
Agreed.
I think this is a great series because it’ll be better for the algorithm while also playing to your book reader audience.
More please. I had some of these books on my list but I added more to it!
I'd love to see more "If you like this, Read" videos made. This is a great idea.
Totally agree with Sword of Kaigen! Love this book so much! And now that I have watched your video... I might have to read some more Chris Wooding...
I'd love to see you do this for different series/books
I love this series idea! Most of the time, we viewers and readers guide ourselves by the vibes of what we watch. It's why so many stories as "Like LOTR" or "Like Berserk" and etc.. I feel that this is a wonderful way to have people find new stories.
If you like universes like Cosmere, enter to the Nasuverse💯💯💯 or the Ryukishi07's When They Cry visual novel series💯💯 (2 of his works have anime/manga adaptations)
@@carlosdanielcalderonmontoy3723 yeah right, answer me this, can you recommend A solid entry to start (that isn't the visual novel)
@@wolfpytlak2786 ok, I am gonna give you a detailed guide but right now I can't, later in this day I will👍🏼
most convenient timing ever. I literally just finished watching arcane for the first time yesterday
Cool idea for a series. I'd definitely watch more like this. I think it would be cool if you spent a minute at the beginning to run down the main aspects of the TV show or Movie that you're trying to hit with the book suggestions.
My favourite part of Arcane was all the council scenes with plotting and politics, but (and I haven't read the books) it looked like your recommendations aimed more towards the Vi and the slums. I think different people will take something different from a series, so a run down of your take before you give the suggestions would be cool in my opinion.
Love that this video was uploaded right when I just finished Gideon the Ninth and am about to start Mistborn for the first time lmao
Love this series.
I haven’t watched any of the Wheel of Time television show, but I’ve loved the books for 30 years. I think the Wheel of Time would be better served if it was an animated television series drawn in the manner of Arcane. I refuse to pay for another streaming service is why I haven’t watched the live action.
I agree with you. The perfect Wheel of Time adaptation would've been animated and more faithful to the books.
Just give an anime adaptation
@@onepresence9460 only if it have an absolute banger of a song like the "Where there's a whip, there's a way" in the 1980 animated Return of the King movie.
This is amusing to me, only because there actually *IS* a series of animated WoT prequel shorts too(Although I don't know how stylistically similar to Arcane they are or not)...but I haven't watched that yet myself because I watched the TV series on an actual television screen via the livingroom PS4 so that I could watch it with other people in my house too and the animated shorts can't be accessed that way(or at least couldn't last time I checked), they can only be accessed via mobile devices like tablets[/etc.]..which, for whatever reason, also even refused to let us chromecast it to the TV from that device either..and I don't personally own a tablet myself, nor am I the Prime account holder in my house so I'm not going to ask the account holder to log their account in on my personal devices in addition to the shared device, and besides it seemed kind of unfair anyhow to literally have to branch off from what was a group activity for us in order to watch the animated shorts separately just so we could come back together again to talk about them later on instead of in the moment. Maybe I'm just being salty and stubborn, but it is what it is. 🤷♀️🤷♀️ Lol ^-^
I forgot about that show in less than a week, not for me. I do like most of the books you mentioned tho 👌
Yo! Glad Ashes of the Sun got a shout out! It was a really fun read that I hope you give a try someday. Got plans to read the sequel after I finish Stormlight 4. 😁
as a relatively newbie to the channel I'm happy you put in the obvious ones. added some to my to read list
Great video. Two books I want to mention are The Unspoken Name by A K Larkwood and Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft. Both are very similar in setting (steampunk with some magic (or a lot of magic in case of the former) and also in themes. Though I have to say that they not necessarily have the same feeling as Arcane.
Great recommendations! I just feel Foundryside was missing, but it's okay! If you have not read it yet, do it!
I was actually about to say the 'Wells of Sorcery' Trilogy or 'Ashes of the Sun' by Django Wexler as soon as I heard some of the specific other choices you had made. All four books are a great read, and I'm waiting on Ashes of the Sun's sequel, 'Blood of the Chosen', solely because I have so many other books on my to-read list to get through first.
Wow now I’m imagining Mistborn in arcane’s style.
HOLY SH*T
Yes! That would be epic!
Love the idea of "if you love youle love"
I started with Stormlight an am now reading Mistborn
Love this thx
Retribution Falls is one of my f ing favorites 😍
2:10 dude your Zoidberg impersonation was on point
Sword of kaigen is the recommendation i waited for. Where similarities are not superficial, but really has the same heart
Thank you Dr. Hardtruth! Haha (I do read all the cosmere though 😅)
I would recommend the Aironaught’s Windless by Jim Butcher. It is about people living in giant spires around the world as the surface has been rendered uninhabitable to humans. People get around on airships powered by magic crystals. It isn’t as gritty as Arcane. Also, there are talking cats.
Loved that book! Just to clarify, it's Aeronaut's Windlass. Gonna have to read the sequel some day
@@whosaidthat84 Thank you. I couldn't remember how to spell it. And only now has it hit me that I could have looked it up.
@@bpaddack1 you're welcome. I'm surprised that book isn't more popular.
Can't wait for this
Surprised No one's mentioned The Books of Babel series. There's a lot of similarities:
-Steampunk setting with airships galore and occasional glimpses of more advanced stuff.
-Grand, Opulent Cities built on top of dark, shady ones.
-Buff badass female characters that are incredibly well-written and have agency.
-Strange glowing fluid that is very essential to the plot and serves as a power enhancer for both humans and technology and can be converted to a narcotic drug.
Hell both series have a dark-skinned female character with a prosthetic arm powered by said glowing fluid.
I mentioned it on the Tweeter, but it didn't get enough likes for the last section Daniel did 😆
You should do a series like that, If You Like X Read Y is a great format and it certainly makes searching for books easier!
Nice black and red book series in the background there.
These books sound amazing
Green Bone Saga, yes! I would recommend Age of Ash by Daniel Abraham. Characters (especially female characters), emotions, depth and the city itself very much feels like Arcane to me. It's not cyberpunk and it doesn't have a ton of action but is very slow and character focused. I love it!
I certainly got some The Aeronaut's Windlass (Jim Butcher) vibes - might be another one to check out if you loved Arcane!
I recently read The Bladed Faith by David Dalglish and it gave me ALL the Arcane vibes I needed after finishing the show. Note that it is rough on its Queer characters but also gives them a lot of love to - an excellent start to a series!
I have this one but haven't read it yet but you just convinced me I need to move it up my TBR list asap!
if you liked Arcane, i strongly recommend Perdido Street Station by China Mieville, and to a lesser extent the rest of Mieville's Bas-Lag trilogy
I don't know dude, book 2 had pirates, book 1 had no pirates. I see a clear winner there.
If you like series are so great hope to see more
My boy Darian Frey getting some love
Having read all the recommendations (except Perdido Street Station), I can second the recommendations!
Ngl..the first thing thought of when i watched Arcane episode 1 was Mistborn..
It gave me serious Mistborn vibes, like Vander being a Kelsier like figure, and Violet being Vin to the point where i thought it would go the same route but holy shit! episode 3 threw it all out of the water and i love it..
If you loved it maybe you could read some of the official lore. Some stories are hit or miss but the really good ones are in a similar level of quality.
But it will most likely spoil future seasons of Arcane. Still, the mix between cosmic horror and the different types of hard and soft magic systems that this world have to offer, I really can't get enough of it. Every city and every kingdom is really unique.
Still need to watch it, but if Gideon the Ninth is a recommendation based off of it, then I suppose I should consider the reverse to be true. Maybe it's time to watch Arcane. Would love to see more of these.
8:42 I got your back chief, Sword of Kaigen is a masterpiece
I like this series and I think that you should do more of these kinds of series for other beloved shows/movies games.
Let me start of by asking if you could recommend books that are similar to the games Mass Effect or Fallout Series. Looking forward to the tv shows of both of these games. I really like the Sci-ci, Characters, Romance, Action-Adventure aspect of Mass effect. And I like the post apocalyptic, grim Action-Adventure elements of Fallout.
This... This be the good content right here.
Also as a joke about fantasy recommendations you could make Mistborn the first pick every time and have increasingly ridiculous reasoning every time. I love Mistborn, it does get recommended a lot.
I have to be honest - I like Arcane mostly because of the amazing graphics and the family drama. I'm not sure that books are going to give me the same buzz as much as I love books. But a big +1 for this potential series, Daniel, It's a great idea. If you are going to read Django Wexler, start with the One Thousand Names, it's still the best in my mind.
I'd throw in The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher. It's got the steampunk setting while also bringing in a class divide and struggle.
Daniel's finger motion while saying "Tweeter Twaters" is something that I'm going to have nightmares about.
So true 🙂
