This is awesome, and needs more coverage! Preordered my set back in mid-January, I would have done it sooner but it wasnt announced until CES haha, and my bank thought 1200+ USD through a new website was fraud until i called them to confirm, yes, i am ordering this amazing thing from them. Eagerly awaiting my headset (hopefully soon than later) in March

Just like the update to the last vive headset, I seriously want to have micro oled displays on the next version of the HTC vive xr elite, then it will be perfect.

  • @UnprofessionalGhostHunter

I really liked the very transparent teardown video of this thing.
The design of the individual parts seems rather modular, and would probably be possible to mod further with 3D printing or 3rd party accessories.
I can easily imagine someone 3D printing a glasses interface for this, for those who need something more than those adjustable dials already present.
If the software is as easy to mod as the hardware looks to be, then I think HTC has a winner on their hands when it comes to tinkerers.
If you are reading this HTC, the following are features I would like to be implemented in the future for XR headsets in general:
    1. Being able to see a blueprint being projected in real life before printing or building it.
Just importing the blueprint file to the headset and have it appear as a full scale 3D model in front of you.
Then imagine being able to place it down, "lock it in place" and have software running that can "remember" where you placed it.
When you look away, it unloads. When you look back, it reappears where you last left it.
    2. Maybe you could hide a virtual treasure chest somewhere in the real world, and upload the coordinates and then having someone else come to find that virtual treasure chest like in geocaching. You could use something simple like a QR code for this. You slap the QR Code on an item, link the QR Code to a downloadable 3D model and then hide the item in a good place. Share the coordinates, and then the next person who finds the item and scans the QR Code will see a virtual treasure chest. Or any other 3D model that you choose. Basically, make the headsets work outside with no fear of the sun ruining lenses.
    3. Full body tracking that is compatible with the standalone mode.
Something like SlimeVR so that you can walk around in a virtual space and actually have legs and such.
Add haptic feedback to the parts of your physical body that touch a virtual object and the immersion gets increased even more.
    4. Imagine using the depth sensor to make a game where you can throw a virtual ball and it bounces off your actual table or wall or pc screen in a realistic way just like if it had been a real ball. Having virtual objects interact with the real world and disappearing behind a chair or under a table etc using a combination of depth sensor and image recognition to judge if something is behind/ in front of something else.
If any of the above is too taxing for the hardware/ battery life then most of the required processing could be offloaded to your PC so that it does the heavy lifting.
Any of these would be cool to aim for when it comes to making XR a reality.

Admittedly this makes me feel more safe to wear the battery pack at the back of the neck. Also this is more entertaining to watch then those videos where someone just smash he’s and destroys an expensive device.

This thing is a pain in the ass to connect to Steam VR.... all kinds of extra third-party apps, extra steps, frustration (especially if your play area isn't right in front of your monitor), etc. Get it together, VIVE. Plus you guys didn't include charging connectors... I guess you assumed we'd all have 3 ports open on our system to connect 3 USB devices to charge at the same time?

@@HTCVive Don't pat yourself on the back too hard... this thing wasn't very well tested considering the main reason people get VR is to use Steam with it... you didn't even include a how-to nor the software to even connect wirelessly to steam. Plus, no charging connectors? We just get USB-C cables... like we have 3 ports open on a PC these days or a HUB ready-to-go for that near where we do our VR gaming? Plus the FOV is sooo limited. It's like looking down the barrel of a gun compared to other headsets. But, for some reason you decided to tie in focus with how close the optics are to your eye instead of making that for FOV like it's been on your other headsets. Not impressed so far. BUt, I could be cranky because I've had to search through any number of videos and how-to's to find out how to connect YOUR headset to Steam VR using third-party VIVE apps that should be available on Steam, much less already installed on the headset.

Hey! Thanks for your feedback. A lot of headsets now use computer vision based inside-out tracking. Basically the headset's tracking uses on-board cameras. Most 6-dof (positional tracked peripherals) require the headset to see it. So accurate tracking is limited by the cameras' FOV. This makes it hard to accurately track. So we took the same tracking we use in our headsets and threw it inside this new tracker

@5:04 Been having the Vive XR Elite headset for a year now. and as of Today those temple glasses arms that you speak of. the Temple Glasses Arms finally broke. The internals are just fine. It's just now I can't put the headset on my head now. Now I'm wondering why I can find the replacement part for that. The design in that area was bad, the plastic was too thin around that area.

I have a question for the diopters are the numbers ONLY for exact -1,-2,-3,-4,-5,-6 measurement or can they adjust inbetween those numbers to get -2.50 and -5.25 for someone who doesn't have a rounded number for it to be used? Also I have astigmatism and it's worse on my right eye and my lens for that eye is -5.25 and -4.00 for my left eye. Would the built in diopters work for me?

How is the Xr Elite actually operated on the pc (cable) so far I only had the Index and it was connected to the graphics card.
Is probably just like an external hard drive
Will there possibly be a way to operate the Xr Elite as a kind of monitor like nreal.
On the Nintendo switch or the steam deck?

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious Před rokem +1

That's not how any of that works and you do not understand the words you are using. All PCVR systems are considered a separate display through the OpenXR compatibility layer. You need a direct connection to the GPU to play VR content from a PC, or you can use modern Wifi standards to stream content for a wireless PCVR experience.
The HTC XR elite (like the quest), can also stream PCVR content through a USB cable. Regarding latency, it's about the same experience over Wifi6e (6Ghz).
The Nintendo switch does not have hardware or software capability to stream from a computer.
The Steamdeck is a computer and works like any other computer would.

  • @HonoredMule

How on earth does this get lauded as the most repairable headset? It has a mechanical part highly prone to failure (the fan) which requires ONE HUNDRED AND SEVEN steps dismantling the entire device to remove, and that's not even counting reassembly.
Meanwhile HTC isn't even responding to my complaints for this $1500 brick that was janky AF back when it would even try to run.
Worst purchase I ever made and last HTC purchase I ever will.
