    Late 2013 saw Fender revisit the 'silverface' period for the first time when it announced the new '68 Custom Series: a Twin Reverb, Princeton Reverb and Deluxe Reverb that combine the spirit of an era with a few contemporary tweaks, rather than providing exacting recreations of the original models.
    Here, Chris Vinnicombe puts the new '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb up against the 'blackface' Deluxe Reverb reissue in an A/B comparison test.

    I keep coming back to this video just to listen to that awesome rhythm and lead. Freaking chilling..on both amps. Best guitar comparison video I have ever heard. Big shout out to all those involved. A+ effort. Saying that...the 65 just hits my ear the right way. Won't throw that 68 out of bed though !

      68 reverb sounds like absolute garbage. Sounds worse than most solid state amps. Can’t believe that thing is a tube amp. 65 rocks it’s socks off completely. And in terms of knob and tone usage this video isn’t a great demonstration of that. Idk if this guy was purposely making the amps sound bad or what.

    • @michaelmay9059
      @michaelmay9059 Před 10 měsíci +2

      The micro-electro magnetic polarity of the dust from 1965 gives the blackface a warmer more etheric tone. Plus any self respecting sound scientist knows that the color black attracts and absorbs the sun's rays there for supercharging the amps thermodynamic tonal range. Dogs hate it 😂

    This is probably my favorite video on CZcams. I keep coming back just to listen to it. I bought a '68, kept it for a few years and sold it. I have Marshall DSL40C now with a Little Black Amp Box to keep the volume down. I had two problems with the '68. 1) I couldn't turn it up loud enough to get the sound I LOVE without getting complaints. 2) I was spending too much money on pedals getting it to sound like a Marshall at reasonable volumes. I will own one again when my living situation allows for it. Such a beautiful amp in looks and sound. I guess I don't know enough about music styles or something, but I don't know how to find more music like this. I would buy albums of this style if I knew what to look for. Certainly, it's Blues & Rock, but what kind within that?

      Patrick Szymanski I used to have a '65 DRRI, and before that a Twin Reverb. Had to sell them when I was short on cash. Need to get one again. I've been thinking maybe the '65 Deluxe Reverb Head might be the way to go. Would be even easier to carry without the weight of the speaker. I also use them at home, silently, with a THD Hotplate, running the speaker output into the computer from the Hotplate's line out, then replacing the speaker, cabinet and room with simulated ones in the computer (IK Multimedia's Amplitube, you just disable the amp section). I can rock out at 3:00 AM then and my neighbors have no idea I'm cooking real power tubes on 9. But my preamp, spring reverb and power tubes are all real. Sounds amazing!

      Admiral Quality can you use the Hotplate with a combo or just amp head?

    • @AdmiralQuality
      @AdmiralQuality Před 10 lety +1

      Patrick Szymanski You could use it with the head alone as it will completely disable the speaker in the LOAD setting. Its line-out works no matter what attenuation (or LOAD) level you have set (and it has its own separate level control in the back).
      It's a great product! I had two, a 4 Ohm for my Twin and an 8 Ohm for my Deluxe. (And is yet another thing I'll need to buy again.)
      That's why I'd like the head. I can't use the speaker at home anyway, my neighbors would complain after 5 minutes. And when the time came that I had a stage gig, it would be easy and relatively inexpensive to buy or rent (or even build myself) a cabinet.

    Thank for this comparison. It really shows the characteristics of both amps. I currently have a 68 Princeton and now this makes me want the 65 Deluxe. For what I play (modern worship/country) my 68 is really warm and dark and breaks up really easy which is great for more rock and roll type music but not too great for me. The 65 Deluxe is brighter with more headroom and has a lot more clarity. Which is perfect. Very nice video. I love the song and the playing is just perfect.
    I have a custom 68. Very good amplifier. The only thing needed if need pur vintage tone is to change the speaker. The Jensen 12K is nice or another vintage one.
    65 imo is the best of the two if needed pur clean Fender sounds without mods on the amplifier.
    68 is customised to be more pedals friendly. No bright cap on vintage channel on the 68. The 68 Celestion speaker is more modern than the jensen. So it's sounds less vintage. But is more pedals friendly on both channel.
    For vintage clean tone 65 is my best choice imo. Or a custom 68 modded with another speaker inside if you like features of the 68 with sounds close to the 65. I have bought a Jensen C12K for my 68, the tone is very close now to the 65.
    On 68, The channel 1 is a bassman circuit. Channel 2 is the same vintage channel of the 65 without bright cap to be more pedals friendly. The 65 has only one sound on both channel with bright cap on both. Only difference on both channel of the 65 is channel 1 has no reverb, no tremolo. Channel 2 has these effects. The 68 has reverb & tremolo on both channel which is a very nice feature.
    Keep in mind that these amplifiers are really loud after 3 of volume. So a good attenuator is not a bad choice even for bands. With an attenuator, the 68 is a little better too cause no bright cap on vintage channel.

    I can speak on the differences around 3 or 4 on volume, not cranked though. The 65 is clearer and more bright cause of the bright cap. The 68 sounds like it has a blanket over it, even with treble at 10 and bass at 1. However, I think I’m gonna go with the 68 cause of the bassman channel and with some eq tweaks on a eq pedal I think it could get pretty close to the 65. Also the 65s reverb is deeperZ

Your video made me think, "It might be interesting to hear a comparison between the Custom 68 custom channel (ch 1) with the tremolo/reverb on versus the DRRI vibrato channel (ch 2) with tremolo/reverb on." The reasoning being that the bassman tone stack is a little different and, unlike the DRRI, the custom channel (ch 1) in the 68 custom can engage those effects whereas the normal channel (ch 1) in the DRRI cannot engage the effects (dry). Just an idea and thanks again for a top class demo!!

    Fantastic comparison. This is the right way to do it. Too many comparison demos involve playing long passages and by the time you get to the second amp, you're too far removed from the duplicate phrases played through the first to detect the differences in nuance between them. Both guitars sound great to me, though somewhat different. The 65 is a little brighter and more edgy sounding here. The 68 has more mids and is slightly darker. The 65 cuts through the mix better here, though I might prefer the 68's voice overall. Both are great sounding amps, though.

    I wonder how big of a role the speaker plays in this test, because im thinking of getting the 65 deluxe reverb head and will then be using my own cab.

      the Jensen speakers used in Fenders are pretty significant in their tone. Feel free to mix it up, but you probably will want a vintage voiced speaker (for example Celestion Blues, Greenbacks, or V30s if you prefer less speaker distortion)

    Each amp sounds better than the other ! I really like them both, and would love to have both in my set up. The music track reminds me of CCR's song "Effigy" very cool !

    I have the 68, custom, and its the best sounding amp i have ever owned, in the past i was always completly uinspirerende by clean sound playing, that have taken a complete uturn with the 68. With the spring reverb on 7-8 and it sounds godly

    Wow Bravo on this demo. Both very useable platforms tonally. I think the 68 sounds a bit more chimey and 3D sounding. It also gets creamy smooth when you push the custom chan into overdrive, but not as gainy as the SS22 which may be more than I need. The 65 Blackface is really my go-to tone ... Hmmm, maybe its time for a change. Im not a big fan of how these are wired these days, but I gotta admit they sound good and its better than getting your vintage gear knocked around on your regular club date. Cant go wrong either way on the used market.

    The problem with these amps is to find that ideal sweet spot you need to constantly set the volume on 8, or 9, or in this case 10.That means the band needs to adapt to you (no matter what size room or audience) or if you are playing solo or even in your basement, you have to crank it. This is a loud 22 watts. Great sounding, for sure, both black and silver.

      Little late to the party, but I just bought a 68’ reissue with the red back celestion speaker and wanted to get the blackface as well, to run in stereo. After 6 years, what were the pros and cons of combining? Maybe no cons here lol

    I wonder. the 68 sounds more overdriven. maybe it has a different input impedance? wish I could hear both of them in their clean state side by side. great comparison try though. it's very difficult to do them.

    .i must be in need of hearing aides...I hear the '65 as a fuller less tinny sound than the '68. I'm a newbie for the most part that's use to my mustang 3 .im looking to upgrade to one of these two (I'm pretty sure) and was leaning '65 till I read the comments lol...I like the brighter tones of the 68 but to me the 65 breaks up nicer or warmer .. Curious to , which would take my hw ts 808 better? I'm so confused!?!? Lol

      The 65 is an actual reproduction of a 1965 Custom Deluxe. But the 68 has nothing at all to do with the Custom Deluxe--it's just a name.

  • @hargoniyamaki5168
    @hargoniyamaki5168 Před 3 lety

    I bought the '68 - I highly recommend it because the reverb and vibrato work on both channels. The input channels on the '68 are standard #1 and -6Db on #2 (both sides) giving it flexibility with higher and lower output guitars (I have a Telecaster with 17-ohm output pickups). Channel #1 is your pedal board input and the Vintage section is where you want to play a raw guitar. The amp is stunning and sounds full on 2.5 to 3 -- so doesn't need you to wake the neighbouring farm to hear it well. And just a note, I have a ToneMaster version of the '65 as well and in comparison it is not great at all.

      JJ 6V6's and 12ax7's in the gain stages, sovtek 12T7's, reverb and phase inverter 12ax7's.

    so im thinking about getting one of these. I love the bassman channel and how the silverface breaks up a tad eariler and takes pedals a bit better. But it sounds a bit thin to my ears. I like the black face but it just has reverb for days and doesnt have the bassman channel =( opinions?
