WHERE TO MAKE YOUR ZERO TURN?! [LET'S SETTLE THE DEBATE!]

- Today Rob and I are taking a quick second to demonstrate the difference between turning on the lawn, and turning on a sidewalk. Yes there are pro's and cons to both, so help me settle the debate!
When turning on the lawn, you cover your tracks but unfortunately still add stress to the lawn when you turn. When you turn on the sidewalk, you don't tear up the lawn, but you end up tracking on the sidewalk or driveway.
Where do you guys do your"K turn", in the lawn, or on the sidewalk? Let's settle the debate once and for all!
PS, don't forget to comment down below the phrase that pays ;)

Help me settle the debate! Grass or walks?!
If the grass is wet on the lawn because it'll stain, if not everytime on the dirveway/sidewalk if you know how to turn you should not leaves marks either in grass or on sidewalk
Turn in the grass, good grief. Only except is if it a more rural property, ill turn on the black tops - your not staining black top. Leave the property looking better. If you turn properly you don't ruin the grass turning.
@@boarder247 stripes look better carried out though I think
@@jdias51 for sure, but still leaves a mess. Or at least it can. In my opinion, ust appears more profesional to not leave stains. I do some rural lawns without sidewalks or curbs and those are awesome to throw down stripes on.
@@jdias51 That’s when the perimeter cut comes in. 👍
In my opinion, it depends on the property that you’re doing because in some circumstances it’s better to turn on the grass like if he has pavers or a brand new driveway where if you have a customer with a older driveway where your skidmarks don’t show up as bad
That’s a fair point
Fair enough, it would be fair to say I never turn on concrete, I try to not even drive on the sidewalks/driveway. But your not doing any harm to blacktop. Cleans up just fine.
new concrete loves grass clippings lol I have to break out a push broom and its still rough lol. love that you mentioned that.
I'm with you on that!
I'm 13 and this week my bussniess has grown like crazy my GMB have grown and I'm getting about 2 calls a day today I mowed 8 lawns day before I did 4, Yesterday I went from a push mower to a 5500$ mower, Exmark Radius 44in, And I bought a trailer this week all brand new stuff. These videos are super helpful! Thanks lots!

Hi Brian great topic. I'm currently in my 22nd season mowing professionally. I train my guys to stay off driveways and sidewalks. Especially concrete! The stains look awful. Other reasons are to avoid broken windows. As far as tearing the grass is concerned I'm kind of stickler on learning to turn without tearing. Employees will roll their eyes but im out there with them to teach them and I feel it's worth it.
Only time I turn on a drive or sidewalk is if it's raining or frost etc or a steep decline. Even then, it's a multiple point turn on any surface
As long as your Hydro Gears are in perfect sync and condition yes. If you work for someone that does the bare minimum then you roll with the punches.
It depends on how wet the grass is. If it's dry you won't leave marks and you can blow the grass off the street.
I agree, it depends on the property for me as well. If we have wet/long grass we stay off the concrete, those stains stay in there for weeks. Especially on new concrete
I’m just a homeowner but I’ve been edging second lately. That way I can see the blades of grass that the mower won’t reach and not have to spend more time with the trimmer than I need too. When I trim first I always seem to waste time cutting grass with the trimmer that would be faster to do with the mower.
Although, sometimes my wife wants to do the mower and those times I get out first with the trimmer, quickly knock it out, and get the heck out of her way 😮
One thing I like to do is mow around the perimeter first, cutting the grass and throwing the grass clipping away from the flower beds, bushes, trees, house . and then make my turn on the grass .
Hey Brian. I bag most of my properties so I feel like its better to edge/weedeat and then mow. That way it picks up the clippings that the weedeater leaves. I do agree that it depends on the property and weather for which way you turn around. Great video as always!
Always have turned on the lawn. Then do final perimeter pass to block out those turns. But always use both joysticks/levers when turning
Picking up my first zero turn mower tomorrow, so going through these training videos are interesting to see what works and what doesn't, or rather what is suggested to keep the client property looking better. Thanks
Sidewalk!! More complete stripes, looks nicely finished
I appreciate you showing both methods and how they work.
I like your abbreviated 3point turn , am now doing that to minimize tearing up the grass !
Simple homeowner..thank you for this video. No lawn care czar here...edge/trim second...also easier to expand the trimming area around obstacles after you mow vs forcing your mower into a bad spot. Also I am working n perfecting my zero turn with out tearing the grass.
Also I had not considered edging after I mow but I like that idea! I am going to try it out and see
Make the edge throughout the whole lawn pointing the discharge chute inward. Depending on the angle of the stripes, turn on the concrete/blacktop. Always edge with a trimmer/edger 2nd!
Depends on the property and whether wet or dry conditions. When I can use a road or driveway or sidewalk WITHOUT LEAVING TIRE MARKS I do to be kind to the grass.
Thank you! It's well into spring but still sweater weather here!
Depends on the property. It also depends if the sidewalk/driveway were recently poured or if it's old conc. Generally new conc will leave tire marks and older conc won't
I like the finish look of the grass when you turned on sidewalk
I do both, sometimes you have to turn on the pavement, but mainly I keep it in the lawn, because driving the mower off crushes the edges of the lawn-- which segues into the edging topic: again, the mower can also crush a nice fresh edge, whereas edging afterward leaves the product way more crisp.
Sweater weather.
I tend to turn on the grass, when I have help I have my second string trim while I’m making my first 2 perimeter passes then they stick edge while I finish mowing but this year I have been by myself and for productivity I string trim and flip edge so I only have to go to the trailer 2 times instead of 3.
It really depends on the landscape, dips, holes, hills, out of concrete slabs, etc. I do a perimeter pass first to catch the edges and do my turns on the grass. It's a little cleaner too💯
i agree with you! Turn on Grass. One thing you didn't mention but you do is if you are operating your zero turn correctly all tires are always moving on a turn and therefore less chance of tearing up the yard or marking the concrete. Like sitting in your car stopped and just turning the wheel is going to leave marks instead of only turning wheel while moving.
In the grass is preferred expecially in wet conditions due to grass and streaking on hardscapes. But, I also turn on driveways in less formal settings.
Sweata weatha!!! Same here in NY. 82 Wednesday, rain Thursday,50 this morning. Drought all summer here. First rainfall since June, lawns finally starting to come back!
Hey, you may of seen a spam comment. Pls don't reply to that. I deleted the comment and the bot, apologies.
I agree with you on where you turn. The HOA I mow in doesn't have sidewalks so I stay on the grass the whole time, and with that I can edge first because I don't go out in the street to turn around. It really depends on the properties and if I have a helper with me. If there is a guy with me it normally gets edged first but I do it after I mow when I'm solo. Love the videos and the comment war😂
Interesting because I am part of a two man crew. I do the edging and try to dodge the mower. If we have 3 lots in a row I'll start at the opposite end but at some point jumping out of the way..
Every time i look up a odd lawn-care question this guy always has a video for it so clutchhhh
lol ❤️
Hi. I own a small lawn care business. It is a case by case play; if I can turn around on the road or sidewalk and it not look bad I prefer that. If there is a sidewalk and easement, I like to turn around in the grass nearest the road between the sidewalk and grass and then do a perimeter pass to clean up. Perimeter pass and outlines either way. 7/10 times turn around in the grass and 7/10 times edge first . I edge first especially on overgrown properties for sure. Sweater weather is the best weather. Love the content and appreciate you and your enthusiasm and dedication to your craft and this business.
I’m just learning and your channel is super helpful!
I do both . Each property is unique in and of itself .
Thanks for the video! I turn in the grass. My new stand up I am having issued with ruts even with the k turn
Great info and I have properties where I have no choice but to use the driveway or the sidewalk to do my turns as well
Great topic I have a couple I turn on the driveway but never on a sidewalk so most of my yards are turn on the grass.
Hello Brian it all depends on the property what is more convenient usually it’s always on the grass but there are some properties with the driveway is right there and you can roll off the grass turn onto the driveway and then roll back onto the grass so I would say a little bit of both👍
In turn on my drive and street, on one side and bottom; the top and other side on grass. All a matter of lawn and neighbor borders too. always do two passes wide on perimeter, this keeps clipping from blowing into others yard when I turn in grass. I follow up by a last perimeter pass, as I do run a stripper kit on my unit; comes out looking very clean. I edge 2nd, for the exact reason you noted. Great vids, keep em coming!
Sweater weather!! I am using a 30”push mower and I use the side walk when it’s dry and the grass when it’s wet but it also depends on the specific lawn in general. Southeast Mi area
Sweater Weather, I would prefer to turn on the lawn. However I have some properties including mine, where the sidewalk is above the grass line. The grass slopes away from the sidewalk. If you make a perimeter cut, the angle of the deck leaves a line, then as you turn you can definitely see the turn around deck marks. In both of this properties I ride over the sidewalk. No swirl marks or angeled lines. I do worry about the wear on the sidewalk over years of cutting. Time will tell. Really enjoy your videos, obvious experience has taught you well!
Sweater weather! New watcher and you inspire me to do better. Thanks!!!!
I'm getting my first zero this weekend so I'm in for a huge learning curve
If you have any hills, go side to Side, try not to go up-and-down. Your Libel to end up in the ditch.
Sweater weather and by the way I had my jacket on all day today and at some points covered my head with my hoodie also what a day of mowing in this wind but it feels a lot better than 100°👍 and by the way you know it’s coming next❄️⛄️
I generally turn on the lawn (Canada Here) but compared to your other video you posted recently I face my chute facing into the lawn instead of out. I edge first then cut second, my thought process was always that edging first lets me cut the longer grass clippings into the lawn to match that sometimes show up. I find if I edge after cutting there will be uneven clippings on the lawn. The only time i edge second is if im about to get rained or poured on.
With progressive curbing I turn around in the road. Always edge 2nd. The edger clipping are shorter after a mow and easier to blow and blend back into the yard.
Brian after 31 years of doing lawns we mow first edge and blow second. Also I've only had my toro grandstand since 2015 and I always turn around on the grass for 2 reasons. 1 is wear and tear on the tires the concrete and asphalt are harder on the tires and 2 if you do the correct k turn your not hurting the lawn
I mostly turn on the grass. Some properties with older concrete, I can get by with turning on sidewalks and driveways to give the lawn a break. I used to always edge and trim before mowing, but have switched to doing both after mowing
I 3 point turn in the grass. If its a scheduled lawn; you edge after cutting. If its a one-time, cleanup, or over grown lawn; you edge all concrete areas along with surface trimming the entire property, blow all debris back into the lawn, the cut with mulch blades, re trimmer edge concrete areas from mashed lawnmower tire, and re blow off property.
I agree some times I turn in the grass and the driveway.Depending on property
You got it...100 percent when bone dry on concrete...I start at 5 am sometimes and deff 100 percent in the grass
for me it is about 50/50 and it really depends on the property and weather conditions, sometimes on the grass and sometimes on the sidewalk.
It all depends Bri! On a hot/dry day, you can tire skid the pavement or even crack it (depending on what kind and thickness of pavement is. If its wet grass, turn on the grass so you don't grass streak the cement/asphalt pavement unless you have no other option just do it slowly so you don't tear up the lawn. If the edge of the lawn is hilly, stopping/turning on the grass may not be ideal cause you skid and tear up the grass (wet or dry). Like you said, maybe their is no pavement/driveway so grass it is. I say do what works for you, just be smart about it and take your timer cause when you rush, you always JACK something up!
I usually edge and trim first because I do it every other time (can get a little tall) then mow so the mower will mulch the taller clippings while cutting.
I turn on both on and off the road but it all depends on the property. I used Brians video on how to turn without tearing up the turf
The more I mow (just at my house, not a professional) I am starting to try to do less turns on the sidewalk due to "grinding" the grass into the concrete. I find I don't rip up the grass when turning on the grass if it isn't super wet and I keep both wheels moving. If I try a real zero turn then it rips up a little. I always trim first, but think that is just how I was hard wired, never thought about why other than breaking up and taller clippings with the mower. And lastly, sweater weather... love this time of year.
I turn around on grass normally but if it’s really dry then I turn around on pavement. Good video.💪
I Edge first most the time. We usually bag clippings so it’s cleaner. Never have an issue with how clean it looks in the end and there very little debris to blow at the end. I tend to turn around in grass about 40% of the time it really depends on the property. I like my stripes to go the full length of the grass
I rhibk we all have turned around both ways. I typically try and stay on the lawn especially if it is at all wet so you don't leave the green tire track on a driveway. I am 100% with you on the edging for that exact reason.✌😎👍🇺🇸
Sweater weather! I generally turn on the grass and edge at the end. Always exceptions of course but generally speaking that’s how I roll.
I always perimeter any area of grass once maybe twice then do my lines always facing the discharge on the lawn like you do Brian. Most the time I turn on the grass just don't want to buy new tires after a season 😂.
I learned to edge afterwards. Gives it a nice clean looks as you would cutting hair
To be honest Brian, personal preference, realistic conditions ie weather, moisture, drainage of surface, care of the operator & machine.
No machine, no work, no operator, a machine sitting idle.
To damp, both machine & operator idle, no income.
Common sense.
You’re the expert, we take note of your experience & professionalism, enough said.
Peter from Aus 🇦🇺
You’re a legend in my eyes mate 👍
Hi Mark from quality lawn care I edge after I mow and as far as turning around on the sidewalk it depends on the customer but normally into the grass but like I said the situation 👍
Just for you Brian, I edge the front first, then mow; then edge the back yard. And yes I straddle fences too.
I always trim and edge after I mow so if you turn in the sidewalk. Or drive way the tires will mess up your edge.
Both, depending on the yard layout....Driveway/sidewalk usually more common for SW Michigan area where we are.....
The yards all
Look amazing
I do both. Just depends on how I feel that day. Usually mow first though.
I always cut perimeter 1st shooting the grass into the inner part of the lawn, same thing when I run my string trimmer I will run it from the left side to the right side where my trimmer is spinning counter clockwise throwing the debris into the grass not on the driveway or sidewalk. Turn in the grass. I edge first but do see your side.
Turn on grass. Do it like you have taught in other videos, nothing to worry about and keeps sidewalks from having any marks. I recently just changed to edging after mowing because it looks so much cleaner. Ps. Sweater Weather! Although I am an Illinois to Florida transplant so I’m still sweating it out in short sleeves!
Sweater weather!
It truly depends on the lawn, but I think that it is acceptable to turn around wherever is going to make their yard look the best! Sometimes I will take the extra time to blow off more grass just so I can make my stripes go edge to edge on the lawn! Same for edging, I think that it's acceptable to do it either before or after.. If it's dry - before for, if it's wet - after...
I try to turn on the grass and i edge after mowing .... nice video Brian ....
In regards to edging I typically Edge, mow, string trim. If the dirt is real bad I may hit it real quick with the blower before I mow. I never really thought about mud getting on the tires from edging but those were some great reasons to edge after the mow. My reasoning for edging before was if I bag I can suck up the clumps and dirt from the edge. Lately many that I Edge I have been mulching instead of bagging. I might have to try out edging afterwards to see how it goes.
We try to stay completely off the edge with the mower it mashes the edge down and doesn’t look as crisp so turn in grass. As far as when it is edged we have one guy edging and one guy mowing from the start. Blow the edge clippings back in the gras and mulch if you need to. It ain’t sweater weather in Texas
Hey bryan lawn maintenance a nother great video u put out the best content on your channel u are helping my lawn care business grow from your channel u definitely my favorite CZcamsr Bryan how is lizz and the little one
Another reason you edge second is because mowing is the #1 priority when arriving to a property. Not trimming, not edging etc.. if there’s only one thing you had to pick it would be mowing. Having said that there have been days where the rain caught us heavy and we were already backed up. We decided that week of the route and only 2-3 hours before rainfall that the only possible way to finish the route is to only mow and blow the houses and continue the regular routine the next day
We do all the different techniques for different properties.. weekly maintained edges we normally do after mowing. Reestablishing an edge we always do before mowing, then we blow/cleanup then mow. We try to avoid as much as possible turning or driving on concrete driveways or non public sidewalks. If grass is wet we try to avoid driving on or over public sidewalks also.
My mowers have mulching kits so I like to turn around in the grass to avoid getting clippings on the drive. Less mess and less time spent having to clean especially if the grass is wet. And i always edge after I mow. The mower will squish the edges making you have to edge again.
Just started using a driving mower for the first time. I didn’t personally notice any obvious damage in the grass but if I turn on my driveway it marks it up pretty bad. If I turn on the street it’s no problem at all
Sweater weather no doubt. Had frost on the windshield this morning. I prefer turning on hard surfaces to prevent stressing the turf and increase speed but wet grass does kill me on cleanup. I’ve been changing my techniques on several things lately after some good videos. Always edge at the end on regular mowing accounts.
Turning around on the driveway/sidewalk or grass will depend on the property with me. Also, I would always ask the customer. Like to edge after I cut. If you are mowing over the fresh edge you just laid down, does not look as nice when finished.
The best to do is edge second because sometimes the mower doesn’t mow specially on curbs and you have to use the Weedeater to fix the tall grass! Specially here in the south the ground is very un even !
I agree it all depends on the property and the type of sidewalk some are just old and you can't see anything on them like the tire marks and some are brand new work the smallest bit of grass or stands out. One thing I've started doing is laying down my perimeter after I made my stripes my son taught me this complete different look at the end. I always trim an edge at the end of the mow that way if I missed anything with my mower I get it with the trimmer. My question is this how do you guys get away with shooting the grass and not catching it? We always have to catch it up here unless we're mulching. I would love to be able to get away with that would save time and money.
Usually in the grass when it isn't soft and wet. I've never pivoted full zero, always a 3 point and then no marks on lawns.
Edging first unless it’s wet grass down south we’re usually dry. If it’s wet, I edge last to avoid mud tracks.
Make a 3 point type of turn! I have also noticed that on some of my properties that if we edge before we mow the mower will mess up the edge as you roll onto the sidewalk/street! It really depends on what lines you're hitting, and the property! Both of these subjects the owner should make an educated decision👍🏼👍🏼
I tend to try to turn in the grass as much as possible. I’ve had several properties that would scalp at the edge as you came off the grass onto the driveway so I don’t chance it anymore. Great discussion!
Edit: edge second always.
#sweaterweather
My first 2 passes is a circle around the perimeter blowing the clippings in towards the middle. Then I turn around and blow all clippings out. The reason why is that the less I remow the clippings the less wear and tear on my machine, plus fuel savings because my machine is not working as hard to cut the extra grass.
Also edge second. It's the best way to get a true edge on the grass when serviced.
For edging, both answers are correct, and they have to deal with current weather conditions. Adapt and overcome. Dry days, Edge first. Wet days, Edge after mowing. A good Stihl or RedMax blower, and a landscaper who pays attention to detail of the edge line takes care of the rest.
Great Video.
It honestly just depends on the yard, some I turn on grass and some on sidewalk
Good job showing telling, keep up the good work mowing that grass. Just do it cause it will work out at the end. Of what to do first or last it will work out. Have a good one do it to it and well see ya next video see ya bye.
Great video
I’m Florida we always had someone edging and someone mowing at the same time to start off then trim and blow. I don’t recall our edges getting too messed up with doing that order. Also turned mostly on grass but wherever was easiest or made sense. But we also didn’t stripe in Florida so the turning was different. As long as you weren’t flying and don’t crazy sharp turns the grass was usually ok. Definitely had problems leaving tire marks on driveways and smeared grass cause the grass grew so tall and thick there and it was always wet from raining a lot
Brian & Elves here in the UK personally I outline everything first including island beds 2-3 times depending on where the turn is all the stripes are faded into the outline keeping those turns neat on the ends of the stripes.
I cut down to 1/2" though! Shock Horror to and we're 50+ degrees North!
In The UK where it's WET Edge & Trim 1st any debris goes through the lawnmower then.
I turn around on the side walk when available and if the yard is regularly maintained, I don't see any need to worry whether it is edged before or after.
After 30 years of landscaping,I say trim/edge first and since every house is different I say turn the mower wherever shows less tracking.
Mow however you want to mow to make the property look good. I usually trim 2nd. Get what the mower did not get. Does it really make a difference? To each their own.
Tennessee grass is always wet until early afternoon, most of our mowing is in wet grass. We always turn in grass and stay off all cement. Our Scags would leave a huge mess otherwise.
Brian show how you do the Boulevard between the street and the sidewalk that’s a really problem area. Because damned if you do damned if you don’t with the clippings even with a shoot blocker.
Always in! (Not street side).
