The further 1st place is from everyone else, the better items the pack gets. For example if 1st place is about 9+ seconds (random number) ahead of 2nd, etc., 2nd place could get a star or triple shrooms. Anyone behind 2nd could be given what last place is given. Basically, the game adds this forgiving/ second chance rubberbanding mechanic online.
