Latex Mattresses - Talalay vs Dunlop, Natural vs Synthetic (What Are The Differences, What is Best?)

  • If you are researching latex mattresses, Talalay vs. Dunlop and Natural vs. Synthetic, this video is for you. Talalay and Dunlop are processes of converting latex to foam, and natural is the sap of the rubber tree, whereas synthetic rubber is derived from petroleum. Put simply, Talalay is the latest and more technologically advanced method whereas Dunlop is the more original method. And the natural sap of the tree is more durable than synthetic and synthetic blended latex. Most companies will claim their Talalay latex is natural but in most all cases, it is a blend. They claim it is natural because it has natural in it. The only way to know you are getting the more durable natural latex, is to get it GOLS certified which is what we do.

    I have had my Sleep Essentials mattress now for about a year. It is exactly like it came out of the box. I love it! I am never going to buy anything else, when a mattress in my house needs replacing! I have had them all! The Temper Pedic, Restonic, BeautyRest....never again. Thank you for making this for us who needs great back support!

    Update, I still like this guy but I love his mattresses better. I have already purchased twice from him about a year ago and another 3 years. Absolutely no issues with the mattresses they are still performing like brand new. I have one set for me and one set for my daughter and now another family member wants one, so I am about to purchase another one. I highly recommend don't waste your money on all the other garbage. I suffered from back pain and for at least 40 years because of sleeping on crappy mattresses it all went away when I finally started sleeping on these types of mattresses I am now 68 years old.

      Not so fast. Look up "complaints". BBB has some really horrible complaints against this guy. Beware. He is also really expensive too. You can "DIY latex mattress" for way less. It is the same latex he uses and the same process if you DIY your own latex mattress. The encasement on these other sites is much better with the zipper along the top and is super great quality. What he did do was alert us consumers that we can build our own mattress.

I cant take soft cause that would make my back more have more pain. Im going to look at what you have but first i have to deal with Sam's to return and get my money back. That’s just what happened to me! I bought a Berkeley Ergonomics bed “Redondo” from Goodnight Beds in Rancho Palos Verdes and I now have low back pain every morning upon arising. My low back pain resolves within 30 minutes when I’m up, but, now I’m dreading going to bed when I used to love going to bed on my first Talalay Interactive Coil Hybrid Berkerley Ergonomics bed from the now defunct Ergo Customized Comfort in Irvine, CA. I am a petite side sleeper and I feel I have made a huge blunder spending over $4,000 and now I have back pain for the first time in my life. I know box mattresses have a generous 100-day sleep trial and return policy but I don’t know about this man’s return policy. I chose The Berkeley Ergonomics as it was natural and while the Goodnight Beds man said the technology hasn’t changed, I know this bed is causing my stiffness and pain. I prefer a bed that is soft but supportive and comforting, like a luxe hotel bed. But, what is that? Innersprings? Hybrids? I’ve got to figure this out ASAP as I’ve had painful sleep for the past six weeks. Help! What can J do, please?

    Ok I read every comment and watched the entire vid. I like the idea of latex for a few reasons. Longevity without the sag, springy enough to be able to roll around on the bed, and air flow, all natural is a bonus. I have been shopping hybrids and ultimately I think I would like a zippered hybrid with latex on top. I have a bad shoulder, achy hips, and currently a tweaked back :( so I " think " i want a bed that feels soft but somehow is still supportive. I live in Northern Va near Dulles Airport and went to college very close to your store. I am just crazy enough to drive 4 hours to get the right bed....but u never really know its the right bed until u have slept on it for a while I assume. So my questions are....1. Do you sell hybrids? 2. Is there any added benefit of a full latex support system over the hybrid system? Thank you.....great vid

    • @SleepEssentials
      @SleepEssentials  Před rokem +3

      Another reason for our three layer all latex is you can much better modify the firmness if you need to by replacing a top, bottom, or middle layer. With a spring unit, you are stuck with the firmness of that spring unit.

  • @IExpectedBSJustNotThisMuchBS

    I am thankful you can do that. I don't think that option is available in the UK. The only option is wool and I'm severely allergic to wool. • @SleepEssentials

      We don't charge more for the different firmnesses but to explain how the latex is more or less dense, a more dense foam has less air bubbles in it whereas a softer piece of foam has more air bubbles in it. More latex dense equals firmer. Less latex dense equals softer.

    I'm somewhat confused. Wool is a naturally stretchy material--more so than most other fibers natural and synthetic. It's like a natural version of spandex/lycra. Wool in knit form is super stretchy.
    I suppose a super tight, woven wool fabric could be somewhat less stretchy, but it will still have some stretch.

But the most important thing to concern yourself with is the fire retardant chemicals. I've had a TP mattress tested for antimony and it was positive. Our covers are now Tencel, which is only about 30 percent and the rest is polyester to make it a stretch knit. BUT, nothing is treated with any fire retardant chemicals. That is where we differ from all other companies. So what if some company has GOLS latex or GOTS fabric if they still have a toxic fire barrier sock or some other barrier? And every company lies about this because they are forced to by our sick paid-for, paid-off government. @@alfonsoramirez6415 We used to offer the "organic cotton" story but that was all it was, was a story. Organic is the most used word for marketing when it isn't even remotely true. Virtually no one has 100 percent organic cotton because it discolors from a person's body oils and moisture and thus looks dirty and washing it doesn't fix it. So almost all "organic cotton" is really only 20-25 percent organic, the rest is bleached cotton, thus not organic. Learning this, I switched to Tencel because it is supposed to be (notice I said is supposed to be as I have no proof) cooler to sleep on than cotton. And in saying this, my Tencel covers are only 30 percent Tencel, the rest is polyester. I have on occasion told people for illustrative purposes that if they really want and need organic, they had better grow it themselves, harvest it themselves, weave it themselves, and sew it themselves. Otherwise the likelihood of a purely organic fabric is zero. Just being honest. Is your mattress making you sick? I'd be willing to bet on it. My neighbor has been fighting throat cancer in her late 40s. Yes, she drinks diet sodas but she also sleeps in a Tempur Pedic which has been proven to have formaldehyde in them which is a carcinogen. So not only is a Tempur Pedic polyurethane foam waste dump, but it is also treated with formaldehyde. Or, I should say, used to be treated with formaldehyde. Since the class action lawsuit in Texas for the VOCs and formaldehyde in TP, they've probably switched to something else. This is not an indictment of TP, it is an indictment that the US government is a fake bought and paid for government. Let me know if you have further questions. Hi, can you tell us you and your wife's height and weight, sleeping positions, and what type and firmness of mattress you slept on before moving to a latex mattress? Did you contact him and ask what your options were to make it better for you?
      What I find a lot is the subjectivity of the issue people have without any indication of the objectivity of the situation. You did not mention anything about what you used to sleep on on, or how much your weigh, etc.
      For example, if your old mattress was medium to very firm, and you move to a much softer mattress, well of course you are going to notice some issues. Same if you go from medium to soft and move to a firm mattress.
      Also, even though you are over the 60 day trial this guy offers, did you contact him and tell him of your issues? If not, why not? Maybe he is willing to try to make it right? How would you know if you did not try?
      Objectively, for it to take 3 months for your aches and pains to show up seems a little odd to me. I'm not denying what you are experiencing, I'm just pointing out that most people will have issues much more quickly.
      I sleep on a medium mattress now. If I go to my in-laws and sleep on the concrete block mattress in the guest room, well guess what? In a night or two, I'm stiff and sore and uncomfortable. The aches and pains are usually the result of the different joint and spine alignments. Ask any chiropractor.
      If your back or neck were used to being "bent" every night, and then you alight them properly, you may notice some aches as your body adjust to being straight. But that should go be noticed and then go away rather quickly.
      If you lay on this bed and immediately noticed "wow, way softer than what we are used to" well than I would say that it is going to be TOO soft for your liking.
      Also, if you are BACK SLEEPERS, then moving to a softer mattress almost ALWAYS result in back issues from what I have seen. Side sleeper prefer softer as your shoulder need to sink deeper as it protrudes more.
      I would like to know what adding another topper did if anything, what FIRMNESS the topper was, and if you have seen any improvements? And also what your came FROM and your physical attributes would be helpful to get an idea of what to look for.
      Thanks!

    • @justinw1765
      @justinw1765 Před 6 lety +1

      It eventually starts to biodegrade. PU based foam doesn't so much biodegrade breakdown as it just has inferior compression resistance and rebound and that aspect breaks down more quickly than natural latex rubber's. All in all, comfort wise, good latex rubber lasts longer than PU and other synthetic based foams.
      This is one of the reasons why tire manufacturers still add natural rubber to tires, because so far, there is no synthetic rubber that is as durable.
      Supposedly good covers can slow down the biodegration process of natural latex rubber down some. Oils, moisture, spills, etc will speed it up.

    They say wool is good to protect the latex by extending it's life but you say wool is not good because the latex needs to breath 🤔 so which one is the truth? Your bamboo cover is for 9" and my question is will 12" latex fit inside your 9" bamboo cover?

      I didn't say latex needs to breath thus wool is bad. Not sure how you may have misunderstood what I said. Anyhow, we make a 12" cover for four layers for kings and queens.
