Nick, question for you! Can you explain why you put the reinforcement triangle of cloth on top, vs putting it a layer or two below? Thank you.
When it comes time to sand the layers smooth, if you put the biggest layer on top, you may sand through it, breaking the reinforcement. With the smaller layers on top, you are just feathering the edges of those layers, leaving the reinforcement intact on the larger layer.
Looks beautiful and strong for sure. How much weight does the fiberglass and resin add to the paddle?
I am not sure exactly how much weight it adds, but it is not much, while the amount of strength from the fiberglass is substantial.
Nick, how thin do you end up making the wood core on the paddle? I suspect I've left a lot of wood that could have been removed.
The blades end up about 1/8" thick around the edge

Iain Brown Yes, I do. I’m headed up to Brooklin in a couple days to teach at the WoodenBoat School. I will be teaching strip building with an Adirondack guide boat and the microBootlegger Sport kayak. In August we will be doing a Mystic River Tandem canoe and the tandem microBootlegger.

I'm fine, I've just been very busy. I do have a huge amount of video in the can from my last build that I hope I can start editing soon.
I have a real problem preventing the fiberglass cloth from showing after I am done. I coat the surface with resin, then apply glass then resin again. I apply with a sponge brush and nothing else. Am I using the wrong fiberglass cloth or is it the technique?
Can you see white color in the cloth or are you just seeing the texture of the fabric at the surface of the resin?
@@NickSchade I can see white outlines of the fabric. I am pretty sure I saturated under and on top of the cloth pretty well with resin.
I usually do not apply resin to the surface before applying the cloth. I lay the cloth down dry and then add resin on top.
It is possible your pre-coat started to set up in the cloth before you added more resin later. This partially cured epoxy would resist further saturation of the fabric later.
@@NickSchade Thank you very much for your advice. I am using West Systems resin and it seems that I am doing it all pretty quick, so the first application isn't set up yet. Let me ask you this: Does using the squeegee help with the clarity and absorption of the resin into the cloth? Right now, I am just applying with a sponge brush.
@@explorermike19 Mike I would use a different brush, sponge brush will tend to get bubbles in the foam. A squeegee will push the resin deep into the weave of the glass w/o causing bubbles. The glass should disappear if saturated enough.

Nick, do you think it is MUCH better to fiberglass both sides of the blades or would doing only one side be enough? I am concerned about the weight that it adds to the paddle.
Explorer Mike the glass adds a lot of strength. I think a balanced layup is important to that. If you are worried about weight, you could go with lighter glass, but I would still do it on both sides.
@@NickSchade I am using 4 ounce fiberglass cloth. Is there something lighter than that?
I’m using 2oz glass. You can also find material that is lighter than that.

I'm sorry I have been not posting videos for awhile. I had a boat to build for a customer and creating videos takes a lot of time away from actually finishing the kayak so I can get paid, so I took a break from posting videos.
I did capture a lot of video while making the kayak and I just finished making it last week. I hope to start editing and posting new videos soon.
