  • DGN Studio has extended and renovated a Victorian semi-detached terraced house in East London, introducing a sunken concrete floor to maximise the ground floor ceiling height.
Called Concrete Plinth House, the original brief - to transform a disconnected and dark north-facing kitchen into a bright and open space for gatherings - expanded to include lighter-touch renovations of the rest of the house.

Looks impressive, but would be interesting to understand if the architects / engineers considered the implications of going below outside ground level when controlling for water ingress / dampness and if so how they got around these issues (e.g. tanking?). Similarly, would be interesting to know if this change in the ground floor levels has impacted the air flow beneath the floorboards to the front of the house (air blocks are visible out front, but presumably there are no longer any air blocks at the back of the property allowing the air to flow through). Would also be interesting to understand the implications for energy efficiency, particularly heat loss through the concrete flooring, and how this has been mitigated (e.g. under floor heating?).

IT IS SO REFRESHING TO SEE AFRICAN minorities enjoy simpler pleasures of European culture: tap water , beautiful spacious house , maybe even a book or two. :)

Looks about as comfortable as a greyhound bus station, no offense.
