  • Today I discuss how to grow Camellias and the differences between the Camellia Japonica vs Camellia Sasanqua. Camellias are fantastic evergreen shrubs that bloom profusely during the fall and winter when it seems nothing else is. My absolute favorite winter blooms!

    Hi Dee,
    Those are beautiful, I would like to maybe plant them around the pool fence for more privacy. Do they get full enough to act as a short screen? Also, I think you said you are in Zone 7A, how well did they handle the winter there, any sign of winter burn or stress? I am on the border of 6B and 7A, it usually drops to around 0F sometimes a few degrees below. I wonder if they would be ok here...
    Thx
    Chris

    • @DeesYard
      @DeesYard  Před 3 lety

      Hi Kevin 👋
      That sounds so pretty 😍
      As far as Camellia roots, there aren't very aggressive and truly stay around the drip zone of the plant so no worries there, you're dimensions are perfect for 2 Camellias and their root system, actually even larger than needed in my opinion. They do come in so many different sizes and you can prune them easily to your liking 👍
      Only consideration would be root zone during the winter. Usually I recommend a plant rated 2 zones colder than your own for overwintering in a container and not in the ground. However, since your planter bed is of that size and up against your porch I think you can get away with camellias rated 1 zone colder than your own. For example if your a zone 8, you just need a camellia rated to at least a zone 7.

    Madam, the plants I plant like this take 5,6 years to flower. What can I do to make them bloom earlier? My State is Kerala.

    • @DeesYard
      @DeesYard  Před 3 lety +1

      If they aren't blooming, they may not be in enough sun. They prefer at least 4 hours of direct sun per day (part sun). You can also try some Holly Tone or an acidic fertilizer. Remember not to prune them until spring because they bloom on old wood. If pruned any later the buds will be cut off. Hopefully this helps 😊

  • @picklethepepper
    @picklethepepper Před 2 lety

    Hey! I want to get some. Will they bloom in dense shade? There is no direct light but the shade spot gets decent indirect light. I'm reading conflicting things online. I need to fill my back bed with something and I would prefer a shade bloomer. Thanks a lot!

    • @DeesYard
      @DeesYard  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello, in my experience, Camellias do need some type of direct sun to produce blooms. You absolutely could try Camellia Japonica and see how it performs in your space but I wouldn't think Camellia Sasanqua would bloom at all.

    • @picklethepepper
      @picklethepepper Před 2 lety

      @@DeesYard Yes I was thinking of Japonica.
      I'll give it a go. In the summer when the sun axis is more central in the sky, that area will get about an hour of sun poking in around 6-7 pm. I'll give them a try. I only have so much room and my morning sun/afternoon shade areas are specifically for my hydrangeas.
      Do you have any recommendations for a shade flower? I was considering lily of the valley but, I am in zone 9 and I guess it gets too hot for them. They can only handle up to zone 8. I may try camelias or begonias then and see which does better.
