Building Fire Becomes Uncontrollable

- At 6:00 am on March 26 a fire broke out at a commercial building on Voyageur Way and Simpson Rd in Richmond BC. Blocked doors and unnapropriate stowage slowed down the fire crew's offensive attack. Flames spread inside the structure and through the roof within 30 minutes. Firefighters battled the 2 alarm blaze for over 5 hours.
I always have found that when you put water on a small fire it goes out,if you wait a while it will get bigger but its much more fun. Incomptence comes to mind.
If you read the description you would learn the interior attack was impeded due to locked doors and inappropriate stowage.
Being a former fire fighter, why do some fire depts. when they get on the scene of a small controllable, they seem to stand around and wait until the fire is blowing thru the roof before they apply water. Don't understand!!!!!!
Eight years as a fire/arson investigator, and I have the same question!
I gotta agree... around here we're adamant that first priority is immediate water-on-the-fire to start putting a lid on the ambient temperature and prevent more flashup.
Seems to be a common theme of most fire scene CZcams videos.
Probably was R.I.T
@@dlt2154 Even if the pre-assigned RIT gets to the job first, no competent FD is going to leave that be without reassignment. First arriving will take initial investigation/attack, 2nd/3d arriving or 1st rescue arriving will be re-assigned as RIT. You don't just get to the fire first and say 'well that's not our assigned job' while you wait for the 1st due to navigate a traffic jam.
My suggestion and I'm only a novice here, but it would be to apply massive doses of water as soon as you arrive, maybe even with a pumper truck, or hose of some sort.
Why are the so called professional firefighters, so languid and casual before fighting the fire ? What are they waiting for, a delivery of sticks and marshmallows to put on them ?
"Let's all stand around until she gets goin' real good, fellas."
happyjack880 well said!
They were making an interior attack which is why they weren’t using exterior lines at first.
No rush guys
As former Electro-mechanical engineer in building services manager, I had fire brigade to train my staff to use the right extinguishers for the type of fire in situation. Also to turn off power, gas or oil supply. Done fire drills, evacuation registers. In early stages the fire would never get a chance to even grow.
I call for foam yellow/brown
. Liquid fire ..
I'm no firefighter but it took to long to get sum action going they really let this get ahead of them
It's ok to put water on it from the outside while setting up for interior firefighting . . . .
Definitely. Putting the wet stuff on the red stuff still works.
That's what they should be Doing! But That would probably be against the RULES as stated by "truck company officer BFD15" Below!
(A Bunch Of Bullshit) !!! Along with ("You all need to shut the hell up!") I have a better idea ..... YOU can Eat Shit!
@@k0smon Absolutely!
Not without a plan. Plus, spraying a lot of water will make things more difficult, potentially impossible, for the interior teams. Water damages stuff the fire hasn't necessarily yet.
+Archibald Mirenopteryx. What you say is only true when inexperienced firefighters pump thousands of gallons of water through the windows on a small domestic fire.
Here in the UK, we still use hosereels outside once the crews have entered. Spraying water upwards onto ceilings rains down and slows the progress of the fire. A lot of training is required, along with good communications all round. Needless to say. care needs to be taken not to produce steam faster than it can exit the building.
In the case of this video, while crews were kitting up to enter, it was becoming increasingly obvious that an interior attack would be futile and highly dangerous.
Fire fighters fight fire, what are you guys doing......
It sure does'nt appear they're fighting fire.. looks more like a coffee break to me
Great speech to all firefighters who know how to stick up for who we are. I am a 15 ur veteran and there should be no real reason for the interior attack. The bldg when F/I on A side. Backing out was the best thing to do. Fight defensive w Master Streams and Step Guns. Great job fellas and ladies. My hats off to you!
czcams.com/video/RogUt0pBuZ4/video.html Example of a working department.
Looks like they were training. I dont think any fire Department could be this horrible. Or at least I hope not
(Everyone standing around) "that's not a fire yet, we can't fight it yet, give it a minute to heat up..."
In Boston they would have done the same. Expereinced firefighters know this building was lost prior to arrival on scene. Just the fact the initial attack teams went out unscratched is a success. Good job guys. There were no reason not to go interior on arrival, and the gases spread the fire so fast into the structure there was no chance to win the game.
Everytime i watch videos like this makes me puke! Firefighters walking around the fire ,talking ,even joking and not using WATER! What a shame! Am firefighter for 45 years! Ask the feelings of the store or house's owner watching this nasty scene! Sorry guys , have to say it!
Maybe they’re talking strategies and tactics , sounds like they got a fire attack group inside and that’s why you buy insurance....I think for a small department they did a great job
You have to wonder sometimes if they'd move a bit faster if it was their house. I have to admit, I'm in no real position to criticise, I'm sure they know more than me. Maybe being calm and taking your time is advantageous in the long run.
There you go, learn before you talk. Reading further down, the men seemingly messing with equipment were a rapid intervention team to help firemen in danger, not firefighters. Got to learn to bite my lip before making comments, apologies.
Deck guns work great.I hardly ever see fire companies use them anymore
Excellent coverage of this event. I especially like the wide shot of the fire with the smoke in the air.
Hi Pascal,
You captured some fantastic video there! Looks like a very difficult fire to access.
There was a lot of brown smoke emerging through most of the fire. Normally this is seen in the early stages of a fire involving a lot of timber, But this really persisted. What do you think was the source or cause of this? What was the main fuel source in there?
What are they having a coffee break
I was wondering the same thing tuffy and willie, etc. I had a fire at my house last summer started by some fireworks. Thought the whole house would be lost at the rate it was spreading, fire crew wasn't too far away. They busted their asses as soon as they stopped the truck, organized, determined, and stopped the fire and put it out in less than 20 minutes. Burned about 1/4 of house but I have much more respect for you guys(all firefighters) after seeing them up close! I would be so upset If they were just standing around.
Wow, that was crazy, seeing the glass move is really creepy
i love how people comment on what to do when they dont even know the situation about the fire..becouse as you cn see from the smoke its not your typical black or grey smoke it is an oarngeish color witch means there is some type of chemical burning
Even you could not properly explain their actions, so quit being a smartass.
Did They Not Have Water To Start Putting Through The Window While Making Forced Entry ????
dunno.....maybe they made entry from the back
why does it take so long to turn on a water hose and why do you have so many firefighters just standing around
Seriously 😳 gonna send in a crew w/ 1 3/4 hand line at this stage? Lucky they didn’t kill a fireman. MASTER STREAMS!!! Big fire = Big water
I guess the saying "fight fire aggressively "doesn't apply.
I agree with you eljett..that smoke was off gasing and THAT is a bad sign..thats when you pull out and go defensive and save brothers/sisters from injury or death. They did their best and fought it agressively but sometimes building materials dictate what the fire is gonna do..btw good read on the smoke
Not surprised it got out of control ,as the start of the video they are standing around taking their time using hoses.
I quit watching after the first few minutes of them watching it burn, making their plan of attack, WTF?
WTF is Correct! What Plan? Fire....hit it with water right away= Fire Out!
Richard Simpson it’s not that simple. If they hit it too hard and the building is already weakened, it’ll bring it down. If they just hit the outside, then think it’s out, and the inside flares up, then they have to do it all over again. It was already a total loss when they got there, just let it burn and control it.
Robert Bents Definitley not.
those guys standing around are the Rapid Intervention Team there ONLY job is to rescue Firefighters that call a mayday in the structure. In the video you can see them clearly putting equipment on the tarp that will aid them in rescuing fellow FF's....Some departments may have them put ladders up and stretch lines and thats it, also Richmond Fire is a small dept.
@@g23fire That is not the problem. But if nobody starts to attack the fire for a long time that is not a good thing.
Nice work!
it seems that not enough effort was expended early on, until the fire reached massive proportions.
what was being stowed improperly that delayed the attack?
finally, was there any damage to the car dealership?
The design of these buildings are staggering!
Many things wrong with this video. I would like to see what it looked like in the back when the FF arrived. Could they have made a quick knock down?
Some departments will not put water on a structure fire until electric power is cut. Sometimes the structure burns to the ground before power is cut.
Have to agree with most of the post, trucks and man power on scene and not a single line charged and fighting from the A side of the building when they got on scene doors and stairways blocked or not this is fire fighting 101. Rip gets set up after the knock down begins, not after.
What I could possibly see here is that the fire crews area under the impression that knocking it down from the exterior would "push the fire" throughout the building. This is a fire service myth.
The guys standing around are probably the R.I.T team (rapid intervention team) their job is to go in and rescue a firefighter if the situation occurs. I imagine the first due ladder and engine got pushed out by the fire condition. so they are not slow their safe
According to news stories, the stairwells were blocked with boxes of products. Chemicals were found in some units. The firefighters decided to fight the fire from outdoors.
No they didn't! The first action they took was trying to get into the Building!
Richard Simpson - if they had put water on it when they first arrived instead of fucking around they could have saved it.
@@davidsonlankford1168 YOU got that right David!
Which camera did you use? Very nice video!
They wait until the fire is really raging so that there is more fire to fight. That's so more firefighters can come and get more experience. I've even seen them knock down a fire, but not put it out, allowing more time for other firefighters to arrive for "training"!
It Is plain and simple if a fire fighter is standing around there is simply nothing for them to do. Especially considering it was declared an exterior attack. There is a way of doing things and they cannot rush nor over staff one part of the operation.
You have pre-connect hoses and 500 gallons of water for a reason.
That reason is this magical new technique recently invented called going inside and putting out the goddamn fire.
They tried that but were faced with blocked doors and stuff stored all over the place which hindered their attack.
well in old days we had "hustle"only way to put fire out is to get water on it,Mac schnell
This is in Canada, BC (British Columbia) and those guys standing around are the RIT team, they are there to save a firefighter if needed. Clearly this video is after the firefight began so any judgement of people standing around is unjustified at this point. While I agree there seem to be some errors in tactics here, without knowing the whole story its hard to make conclusions
NO it's not Hard They are incompetent Firefighters!
@@richardsimpson3136 Says the self pronounced expert behind his keyboard. Why aren't you out there, since you obviously know better than anyone else?
I don't care whose fire department it is, the first person off that truck grabs a line and starts putting water on the fire, PERIOD! You are not being paid to stand around and watch the fire grow, so you can get a fat check when you bill the insurance company - which many fire departments do when they go out on emergency calls.
@@5.2litrecat45AND THAT WHAT THEY DID DUMB ASS!! You clearly see the lines interior. They don’t put water where you want to make you fell better. They tried an interior push, and that didn’t work. But you don’t just see fire hit fire, especially with guys inside
@@5.2litrecat45and the standing around is RIT team and crews on deck ready to go to work, you clearly have no clue how fire scenes work
Good water pressure,that's a plus👍
@Ray Stewart, these are Canadian firefighters. Don't know if you got the memo or read the description. BC is British Columbia.
Exactly. No one getting in a hurry.
Agreed. Looks they made a good effort of interior attack, had Rapid Intervention Team, etc. Then backed out as conditions deteriorated. Looks like a good, professional job to me. I might add that it appears that they had somewhat less than the 50+ people I'd get for a problem like this.
You may be right, the visible flames we speak of may not have been the primary fire area. However, putting water on a developing fire is never a waste of resources, water or time. "flames coming out windows are not spreading" that is not correct. Although the vent outlet here may be expelling a fair amount of energy being produced, its radiant heat output or heat flux will be causing other combustibles in that room to pyrolyze filling this area with, and transporting, unburnt gaseous fuel.
Is it just me or did the fire fighters wait until it became worse before they started putting out the fire.
1:15= were they setting up for a picnic?
RIT crew mate. They are there to rescue any injured/trapped firefighters so my guess thats their staging 1st aid area.
@@paulpaardekooper7731 I feared at first, that's the kind of video this would be. I'm glad it isn't. If there's a bow truss roof, or some other critical hazard in there - I say keep them out. In this case, hazard was maze and hoarder-like storage. We get to see the result of that fire load. I think it's well justified here.
These boys really need to get their ASS IN GEAR !!!!!!!!!!!! Need to get Motivated !!!!!!!!!
Please explain....
What I notice is the noxious black smoke pouring out of the building right at the beginning of the video. The building appears to be constructed largely of concrete block, brick, metal, and glass. Those substances don't burn! The junk we can see piled up against the windows and doors has to be the worst possible kind of flammable stuff. Nice looking store front. Maybe the proprietors should have paid more attention to what the public doesn't see.
It is real easy for all of you arm chair firefighters to judge the men at the scene. You cannot see what is going on in the rear of the building or inside it for that matter. The men in front that5 seem not to be doing anything are more than likely there for backup. Unless you were physically there and fighting the fire, just be glad people put themselves in severe danger to help protect us and our property.
+Doug DiPlacido
Touche! :)
+Doug DiPlacido thanks doug
Well said. Thanks Doug
I think Doug, that had I have been a taxpayer and had it been my business that was being destroyed, I would have every reason to be critical of professionally trained observers (although you call them backup), as they watched the business that I had spent years building up, being destroyed and did nothing to help me.
They're actually known as RIT or Rapid Intervention Team, who's sole job is to be ready incase crews get injured, trapped, close to running out of air etc inside the building. So it doesn't really matter what you think they should be doing, they are doing the job they were assigned to do and won't leave unless reassigned or activated and in those cases a new team will move into that task.
You only lose control when you don't take control 🤔
Interesting the different shades of smoke.
That latter truck water cannon, looks like Godzilla, of course spraying water instead of fire.
Well said Sir! Respectful dialogue is how we all learn day by day, but I know exactly what you mean. A lot of the comments from people claiming to be in the fire service, are not only inaccurate but it smacks of some being "6-22s" (6 months on the job but they act like 22 year vets!) if even involved with a Fire Dept. at all. Heck, the only guy I've been really critical of is that Miami-Dade Capt. being a bully! These fellas did a fine job imho! Stay safe out there!
They did great job
Has anyone shown these guys what a fire hose is for? Or do they just like riding in the fire truck?
Excellent camera work.
I’ve seen so many of these fire videos here and asked myself this question almost every time. When I imagine I was the owner of a burning home, watching my and my family’s life go up in flames while 15 fire „fighters“ just stand around. I guess I would totally go crazy.
They are the rescue teams and the changeover crews. A breathing apparatus only lasts around 30mins, much less if you're working hard. Changeover crews are there ready to go.
Maybe you should educate yourself so you dont come off as so foolish
Should have been main jet though the windows straight away. We're they after over time?
What is Canada's issue with water?
Is that piles of boxes and debris right inside the windows?
Wow , what a shambles, do they always turn up then get dressed ! Over here in Europe they would have had water on the fire within minutes of arriving, retained or full time .
To let you know, new protocols are requiring SCBA and bunker gear to stay out of crew cabs for Cancer fears.
@@MrFlogx4 Thanks for that.
I am a volunteering fire fighter in Germany and watching this video makes them look so pathetic and slow.
No effort or anything, just go slow and steady, no hurry Steve it’s just one building, maybe if it’s too we should worry.
How'd this happened and what was the cause of the fire ?
Errrrrr........water out of hose? Into building? When I turned up to fire we used to get hose reels on flames within 30 seconds. Lame....
They had hoses going into the building, which you can see at the start. They were trying to go up and put it out but were forced out due to the amount of crap inside.
Insurance money. Someone got paid. Don't question it, or you'll have the boys show at your house at midnight with the baseball bats.
I am assuming there is Sodium Cyanide in there, hence the lack of water? otherwise why NOt a line through the upper windows and round the side?
From what I saw it looks like they did a good job overall.
That was some of the nastiest-looking brown smoke I've seen in a long time. What were they storing? Great job to the Richmond F-R!
well said elijett, definitely consuming roofing structure, fire through the roof. That's an defensive fire with LDH. Good job, fire had a head start on you.
What kind of camera are you using?
What camera do you use?
These are modern Fire Fighters, first huddle plan of attack, then set up, then check with Bat. Chief, then apply water slowly.......i am old school surround and drown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
these are USA modern fire fighters*
@@Sergio_Gomes474 Who's from the US in this video?
I dont know why these fireworkers are doing nothing... they are standing around and look look look...
those guys are Rapid Intervention Team..... there job is to Rescue FF's , that get into trouble..ie run out of air, fall, get lost, fall through a floor, roof collapse etc
Was this open or just used for storage
What is it with these firemen are they all frightened to do their job. The longer it burns the bigger the insurance claim. Thus everyone pays with higher premiums. Not rocket science
lol... i don't think they are frightened ....you don't know how long its been burning or the fuel load .They tried to make an interior attack and decided the "Risk was not worth the reward" so they went defensive and they all got to go home to there families.....Good call by Incident Command!
I noticed that too, but I think it was more because of the angle of the sun, than the actual color of the smoke.
People are walking around that fire unmasked. Talk about cancer risk!!!!
Defensive attack, good call. Commercial building, ordinary construction, metal decking, metal bowstring joist roof with built up roofing material, heavy a/c units on the roof and imminent collapse of joist within minutes.
I was not there and could not see what was going on 360. But the video I saw it did not see as if anyone was in any hurry until it was out of control. If I am wrong please educate me but I saw no real urgency in fighting it in the first part of the building.
This isn't the only fire video on YT where the firefighters casually stroll up to the fire with no sense of urgency. Lack of urgency seems to be the rule rather than the exception. There's even one video where two women are trapped on the second floor screaming for help while the firefighters scratch their heads determining what to do.
No there is not, link it
Instead of looking at the fire, put some water on it
There were two crews working the interior from the moment the video started
You do not spray water in from the exterior when there are crews working inside
Unless of course your goal is to try and kill someone
Do they set up a donut stand also?
😂😂
YEAH YEAH! YOU ALL KNOW IT BETTER! NICE MOVIE FRIEND!
Reading all the comments about the firefighters taking the time to put on their gear, etc. As we learn in EMS: SCENE SAFETY.
Scene safety is one thing, but that was absolutely ridiculous
They’re meant to be getting ready in the fire truck. So that when they get there hoses out fire out. They do that in the U.K they have the gear in a room so that the boots and jackets are ready. Then all they do is get the hoses connected.
If fire can come out the windows it's pretty safe to assume water can go in the windows.
There is no urgency ffs, just standing around when they get there, a simple quick knockdown fire becomes another car park, we in the uk would attack with hose reel or a line of inch and a half hose
Yeah after you got done pissing yourselves and having a tea break and crumpets and bon bons.
Robert Bents who has Bon Bons and crumpets you’ve been watching too many Downton Abbeys mate, 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why do the US Fire Brigade its seems just hangs about and not do anything for a few mins whilst some ones business or home is being destroyed by fire. This seems to be the norm for most US Fire Brigade videos I have seen here on youtube and else where. Whats going on?
The building was a large floor area warehouse type. The flames pouring out the windows at the beginning very likely were not the seat of the fire, so wasting resources pouring water on that area would have been pointless. I've often wondered the same, but think about it - flames coming out windows are not spreading - it's the fire inside that is the big concern. And, as the uploader pointed out, blocked doors and improper storage were an issue, hampering the initial interior attack.
Well watching it isn’t working, any ideas?
very good
If that was an FDNY job it would never have gotten that far out of hand they should have made an attack from outside while clearing a path to make an interior attack had they knowen straigy and tactics they could have controlled that fire in a few minutes
It's called a deck gun fellas
I'm sure a new project to be built over here
Armchair experts. They're the same type of people that yell answers at game show contestants on tv and jump to conclusions without even knowing half of the story.
Nice footage!
That's the ONLY THING that's "NICE" about this DUMB VIDEO!
If that of been here in the uk our fire men would of been straight on it with the water not pissing about wondering what to to
Nobody cares.
did that rescue have a cascade system on it at 1:55
