    These were the pinnacle of small outboard engineering.

      I had a 70s 4hp Evinrude as a kid. I ran it on an 8ft boat I could plane alone. Spent many summers taking that little thing to every lake and river I could get to. A couple summers my family vacationed in cape cod and I took that boat all over the coast of the cape i was about 13-14 years old . One time the coast guard rolled up on me and wanted to race, the guy couldn’t believe i got the little boat onto a plane 😂 and started cranking. Only thing that broke on me was when i stripped a spark plug whole putting a new plug in, once that was fixed I think I did the water pump and fuel pump diaphragms and rebuilt the carb one year, was a very reliable motor. I picked one up a few months ago since I sold it many years ago as a kid. I’ve owned the 2hp models from the 70s and a 6hp Johnson from the 80s. Always great little motors that were super quiet and so smooth! I had bad luck with a couple little Mercury motors as a kid, always rotted wiring and ignition problems. I did have a Mercury from the late 40s it was a 7.5hp Mercury rocket KE4 7.5hp no gear shift, that i upgraded a few years later as a kid, was a really fun motor! I feel like the Mercury motors from the late 60s/70s (small hp) weren’t my preferred motor. I did get a 4hp merc from the late 60s was a single cylinder but never got a chance to run it on my boat .full gearshift and light was a cool motor

    Just bought a 1990 Johnson 15 hp J15EESR little over a week ago, I'm going to do new water pump and carb kit and yes that plastic plate on top of the carb is very expensive for what it is, mine has a crack in it also.

    what are your thoughts on using gear oil from the auto shop. "not marine grade" i bought some master pro gear oil 80w-90w gl5 boat runs great in the bucket. once it gets in the lake it at full throttle it bogs out and cuts off, think it has to to with improper trimming/ tilt of the motor not planing?

    Hi, how much approx do you pepper and the boat weigh? I'm trying to work out what speed my same evinrude will go. Thanks

    Well I want to move so I can get to my Fishing spot but then I want to be able to fish with it as well and by the way you were right about the power pack that was the problem

      Well that is good news. Just about any OMC Johnson or Evinrude from the 50s to the 90s 5.5hp to 10hp are very good motors for a 12' boat..
      and even a Chrysler can be a very good motor for fishing but with any motor it needs to be in good tune.
      Any older motor is going to need to be gone thru with a good tune up to make it right.

    So since you've been so helpful for me I have another question for you I have a 1960 12' valco And I'm looking for a nice little outboard for it what size would you suggest and I'm looking for an older motors so I don't have to pay a lot of money

      @chrysleroutboarddude  Před 6 lety

      Sorry I have been out of town. It depends on what you want to use it ,are you looking for a fishing motor? or something that is fast?

    So I have a question for you I have a 93 Johnson 15 horsepower I have replaced the impeller Tuned up the carburetor replace the thermostat but I have a problem It starts off running fine and then all of a sudden won't go past a quarter throttle I will stop the engine rev it up and sometimes it will go right back to normal other times it won't I can't figure this problem out

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  Před 6 lety +1

      Sounds like it might be loosing spark on one cylinder. Next time it acts up check spark could be a bad power pack.

    • @sqhunter65
      @sqhunter65 Před 6 lety

      is that like a module that you can replace, its funny it starts off fine and then just goes too like quarter throttle and then it will come back on periodically.

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  Před 6 lety +1

      That is what they do. I don't know if that is the problem without looking at it but could be.
      This is the part for your motor.

      I don't think it would be if it run's fine sometimes

  • @MattMohsOutdoors

    That thing is up and out of the hold way faster than mine. Even on my small 14foot boat I only got 20mph out of it
