Is this your future? 69 yr old died while living in a car two years waiting for low income housing

- We are living longer and having less on a fixed income. We have waiting lists for low income housing that people aren't living long enough to move into. Our pride keeps us from taking help. This man's last 2 years were miserable for him. This breaks my heart.

I am a 67 year old veteran. I am ashamed of my country.
My 87 yo Army Dad cried over what this country has become
I am ashamed of this country.
I am also ashamed. America is not all that great.
I'm sorry for you all. This situation is temporary. Stop with the country bashing. Don't like it, leave.
It's not better elsewhere.
Thank you for your service. It is disgraceful, may they get help soon. And Social Security funds can be raised by our elite Senate. They sure take care of themselves.
I do not understand why our country is not building low income housing for seniors. All the money that is wasted on nonsense.
A takeover is occurring as I type.. You don't know..? We have J6 Political Prisoners languishing in a gulag without due process for 4 years. We have open borders where illegal aliens are receiving 3800.00 a month. America has fallen. I could go on forever but so many are still asleep. Oy. We are no longer a Constitutional Republic.
I agree. I guess there is no profit in low income housing. The government should build low income housing. Riches country in the world and people have to resort to this. Rest in peace Mr.
Some cities are building but they are too slow and not enough !
My gripe is that 'affordable' is not affordable at all, at least in our area, and I think it's everywhere. They're just not building anything small enough that somebody might be able to afford. :( And by the time the red tape is gone through, it's two years or more later.
The real reason is that contractor's greedy contractors siphon. Money from the low-income. Housing contracts for their personal vacations and all kinds of criminal activity. This went on in california. MAYBE the whole country. I am 60 years old and I lived in 2 apartments when I was a young mother in California back then, . The list's a year or two long the a government hasn't made it a priority federal government hasn't, And employees in the affordable housing Jobs. Federal jobs seem to keep their jobs, no matter what whether anyone gets affordable housing or not. I watched a documentary pays to educate yourself So basically it doesn't pay enough for contractors. To mess with affordable housing that doesn't make them rich
This country has lost its moral compass period
This right here ☝🏼
True, but what starts out bad.. ends terribly. The past, present and future is connected. Just think for a minute and see
Senior housing should be a priority. It's disgraceful to hear 70 & 80 year olds are living on the streets. It's hard to believe this is America.
Well who will pay for their housing? If they spent all the money they made their whole lives and didn’t prepare to retire that’s on them. And where are these peoples families?

We have failed our elders too. Poor voting choices, blind acceptance of homelessness and support of tax avoiders and gougers.
Blame the victim mentality. You don't know their circumstances. Sure, some may have spent too freely but others may have had medical bills, job loss, illness or periods of disability. You can't look at an entire group of people and say "they should have" @@smfarrie2943
It is in Finland’s constitution that everyone should have a home. They have the lowest homeless rate in the world. Shame on this country. Thank you for honoring this man’s life and showing the truth of many elderly people’s lives. . May God bless him in eternity.
That's because they pay an obscene amount in taxes.
@@martna1 So do we in Canada and yet we have a huge housing crisis. Most people don't mind taxes if it means a good quality of life
@@martna1 nothing is FREE, if i had to pay more taxes with a roof over my head ok.
@@zlatkajupe yes exactly. no one should be without a place unless that is their choice.
I might pay lots of taxes here in Finland but I have also been able to get free master's degree, part of the taxes goes to my retirement, I can walk around or bike anywhere in Helsinki safely plus the property tax is minimal compared to many states in the US. I work in real estate management and also see how certain organizations rent to the most difficult tenants (drug addicts and alcoholics). These organizations own apartments in normal apartment buildings where some tenants own their apartment and some rent it. Sometimes the tenants are not able to follow housing company rules. But mostly they are. I prefer them to have a roof over their heads rather than be in the streets. Every human has value as a human. Everyone should have a home if they want one. No matter what age. Lindy you made an important video here.
Hi Lindy. I'm 75. My husband died 8 months ago. I had to sell our home as the utilities and taxes were outrageous and I couldn't keep up with the maintenance. I now life on family property with my 74 yr old brother. We help each other and our expenses are a lot less. We are blessed!! Not every senior has options and it's beyond sad!!!
My 72 year old ex husband was paying $1200 + utilities to rent a room in CA. He had to keep working to afford to live. He lost his job and starting living in his car. He was on a 7 year waiting list for low income housing in CA. I found him his own 1 bedroom senior apartment in MN for $450 a month including utilities. No waiting list! His older brother lives in the same town. It was tough for him to move away from his kids but he realized he had to make a choice and he wanted to be independent and not live with his kids. After he adjusted and made new friends, he’s happy. He loves the smaller town and lifestyle. He is actually able to enjoy his retirement and has extra money to do things. He video calls his kids all the time and plans to visit during the holidays. I’m happy he found a safe and secure place to land. Sometimes you need to do what’s uncomfortable to secure your future.
How sweet of you to look after your ex-husband. I'm glad you had a relationship with him. He was blessed by you!
Because you democrats brought in all the immigrants and taking it all
May God bless you always for helping him🙏🏽❤️
so true
What I find hard to accept is that so many children don't step up and house their elderly parents, even if it's putting a bed in the basement or sleeping on the sofa. Forget saying it would cost them too much. I found a way to support my child for 18 years even though poverty striken for most of it. The elderly won't be around for long and it's not going to kill a family to return the favor for a few years.
Worked our entire lives, paid into a system that is BS, and giving away our $$$ , and no relief from TAXES, WTF
People need to do more than pain to a system. You need to save and invest years before retirement. SS is meant to supplement your savings not to live on.
Billions for illegals who are being housed in luxury hotels, the rest going to Ukraine yet our elderly and veteran AMERICANS die in their cars because of course no housing for them!!! I have never been more disgusted with that POS JB and this current government as I am now!!! FJB! Trump 2024!
Thank the demonrats in office. Get them out!
We were told in the 1980's all about 401Ks, the need to get a job & save, and that there was a real possibility that Social Security wouldn't even exist after 2032. I'm confused about what many people were thinking when planning financially.
Our country has always been the worst for caring about the elderly. America just is about 100% destroyed in every way.
We send billions $$$$ to other countries but won't care for our own in need.
They need to care about themselves first. If you don’t prepare for retirement this is your fate. Families are so important also.
We can accept in which case we shouldn't complain. We should challenge our Congressional leaders.
@@dcg590many DID prepare for retirement but have been prices out due to this horrible economy. It effects more than just seniors, do you know how many young people are living this same way WITH jobs? They cant afford an apartment but work over 40 hours a week! Easy to just blame people but the reality is, it’s GOVERNMENT that has made it nearly impossible for many folks to be able to live, even simply.
@@greglumho4125 My sentiments exactly!!!!
I am elderly and live on a fixed income. I am so outraged at the way our country is treating its seniors! Many of us worked since we were teenagers and by the time we went on Social Security, our benefit pay was very small and not enough to live on by today's standards. Other countries make housing a priority! Not the U.S. To say we live in the greatest country is a lie.
Same here, and I think about it every year around rent renewal time. Fortunately I have a nice building owner who looks out for us.
What other retirement planning and saving did you do?
@@RepentImmediately
Life happens to people. Sometimes savings and investments are wiped out due to health, financial and other emergencies.
The problem is that they drill into you from your childhood that you need to plan for when you retire. Why does everyone in this country who pays so many taxes have to plan so much for the future when the government knows we are all going to get old? Why the hell isn’t this a priority? People who work essential worker jobs are actually essential to the economy and there’s no way to save much money. My partner got disabled from Covid and from the vaccine 10 or 20 years before his retirement age and there’s a little bit saved up but he had just gotten through taking care of his elderly parents. He also financially supported his mentally ill friend. The people I know who have planned the best for retirement are financial people like bankers, that’s all they ever cared about was money. And they are not the ones sending money to their parents and taking care of other people, because they are the greedy ones.
The greatest nightmare 😂
They are building "luxury" apartments in my area while the elderly are on a 3 year waiting list to get in affordable housing. It's DISGUSTING!!!
So pony up the dough to the housing! You’re fantastic! How nice if you. Then supplement the cost to operate said building because of course you want to keep the rent super low.
What do you think used to be on those lots before it was bought up for commercial properties?
Luxury apartments are built by private developers. Subsidized housing requires government funds.
Our country has shit for priorities. They let developers decide everything. Foreign investors can buy up all the land if they want. There’s no reigning in unbridled capitalism. People who need subsidized housing can’t bribe the politicians.
Do you live in MT? Cause that's exactly what they do here too, except instead of luxury apartments it's individual McMansion townhouses starting at ~$300,000 after they spread rumors thru town it would be federal housing!
I’m 34 years old and I’ll never let this happen to my mom.
God bless you. I am almost 66 and never married and no children. My living family tried to make me homeless. I am living in a RV but it is expensive. I tried to move close to my siblings who each have land and space. For years they refuse any contact or cooperation. I was catfished and lost my home of 20 years. Then multiple homes were stolen from me afterwards by the frauds and cons who catfished me. Please remain loyal to your family. Thank you

Yes and it was a nightmare. I am yet to meet any old person- I am talking over 80 - who wants to live with the kids and grandkids. Everybody is unhappy. It is a survival mode.
Actually, in my 70’s and I have two daughters (age39 and 43), who refuse to allow me to help them by moving in with me temporarily. Fact is, our society influenced override common sense, so they’d rather than, form a multi generational home with me. That close “ motherly bonding” love seems non existent these days everyone wants their own, and doesn’t want to work together for a better future.
No.
We still do. Soon to be 4 generations. We're trying to move and any suitable housing is immediately taken by property investors and turned into bedsits.
How do you know. Do you have a crystal ball. Geez what a sad person you are. I will die when the time comes. What do you care.
A friend of mine is 62, fully disabled and has been living in her minivan with her small dog for going on 5 years now. She needs a hip replacement (among other things) and walks with a cane. She's on all the waiting lists but no help comes. Such a sad situation for her and so many others right now!
Maybe you could give your friend a room at your place

STUPID BIDEN!
I’m 76 and still work full time. I get a sick feeling every day I have to go to my stressful job. Lots of people want to live a long life. I’ve had enough, looking forward for all this to end.
Just know that you are not alone and not the only one in their 70’s still working.. there are so many in this country who cannot retire and must work to keep a roof over their head. God is watching, he sees everything. Count it a blessing that because you must work, you are still physically able to. Our bodies are deteriorating as we age and some cannot get up to go to work even if they wanted to. Be at peace, don’t live in despair, life is not the same for everyone, once I accepted that, I’m a little more happier. I dream about retirement everyday, but I don’t allow myself to get sad about it anymore. I have a rule, once I clock out from work for the day, I don’t discuss or focus on the job. I don’t even mention the people that work with me. If someone ask about the job, I just tell them I don’t talk about the job in my off time.. Switch your thinking when you clock out. My job is stressful and a lot of mess goes on there. They are paying me for only 8 hours.. not going to let it consume the hours that they are not paying me. I feel so much better when I live my off hours like I don’t have job. I like parks and studying the Bible. Keep your head up and make the most of your off time and don’t allow others to suck you into conversations about the evils of the job. Think on good things only.❤️
I’m 69 and couldn’t work a full time job anymore Dontknow how you do it
This story made me cry. I’m 69 years old and I just do not understand why the elderly are treated this way. There is just no excuse. May he rest in peace.

This is a myth perpetuated by Faux News & the GOP propaganda machine. No one is giving those migrants a dang thing. If they get a cot in a tent outside, they’re lucky. Some of them sleep on the floor inside the police precincts. I have no empathy for people who look down on others like this. If you’re really concerned about immigration, do your own research. Legal immigration from India is what really hurts our economy and no one talks about it.

I work at a big box store and I'm sad to say several of my coworkers are in their seventies, or even early eighties. When they talk about it, they admit that they are not working because they "enjoy meeting people" or "want to keep busy". They are working these jobs because they just can't make it without the extra income. One cashier has had her hips replaced and is out for a knee replacement but will come back to work because she still needs the money. Our country has let us all down, especially those in their Golden Years.
It's so sad how the government treats the elderly. They need to be arrested for elder abuse all of them.
A senior lady I know was being evicted. The day the landlord and cops showed up she cut her wrists. Luckily the cop stopped her before she completed. As soon as the ambulance drove away they started throwing all her belongings in a dumpster. The landlord was 100% heartless. It's all so heartbreaking. All happened within the last week. 😢
Absolutely unfathomable 😢

That's disgusting! Where has our humanity gone??
This is pathetic! I recently saw how an HOA or apt complex was going to evict everyone with a garden in a complex of mostly seniors. This was 100% a property grab-& they knew the seniors couldn't do it in the time frame .. Luckily a non profit came in and got rid of all the gardens in 1 day!! It's was refreshing to see the little guy get a head up for once
Got rid of gardens???? Unbelievable

Today that payment will run about $2100. 40 years of paying rent could have paid off that house. No mortgage payment today then. She should have begged, borrowed or stolen to get that home. Tired of hearing excuses. EVERYBODYS got situations! Everyone. You gotta have shelter, so use that rent money and make a house payment.
All the abandoned houses, all the abandoned buildings, abandoned schools why can't something be done with these turn them into livable residences... That can be low income for veterans and seniors.
If I didn’t have my husband I couldn’t live by myself. So sad 😢💔
My husband died 10 years ago and so I live on my social security because I made more than him. I suggest that you apply for housing now, get on multiple lists and try to move to a place that if something happens to one of you, you'll have a place and they can redue your part of the rent according to income. Look for tax credit apartments and also apply for HUD Sec 8 voucher to lower red even more. Best Wishes.
@@elainegoad9777 So right! It happened to me.... something to consider. They will do your rent according to your income and they will also give you a URP (utility reimbursement payment) if your income is low or non-existent. That with other gov., programs will get you through some hard times.
Prayer helps also! I know God helped me when I needed help.
My husband and I use to joke that one of us couldn’t die because the other one couldn’t afford to live. Guess what I’m there now!!
I’m so ashamed of this country. Vets and the elderly are being ignored. They should take precedence. 😢😢😢😢 then to see the walker in the back is extremely extremely disconcerting. Rest in peace sir he’s was only four years older than me. I thank God I have a house.
This country and the injustices going on within it are because of people - human beings - who CHOOSE to create these situations out of selfish greed. It starts with the power-mongers at the top and filters down to you and me.
My landlord raised my rent by $500 this past January. I’m 74 and live on SS plus a small portion of my ex-husband’s pension I was awarded in the divorce after 23 years of marriage and staying home to raise our five children.
The next time they raise my rent, I’ll have to leave. I’ve lived here for 14 years and never been late or missed a rent payment - not once. I’ve been an excellent tenant and often fix things myself at my own expense without ever telling the landlord for fear they’ll raise my rent.
Thank you for doing this video, Lindy, and for bringing the plight of many of us to your audience. Unfortunately, I doubt things will improve for us because people in a position to help simply will continue to do nothing.
It is so sad how things are today. 😢 this country needs to prioritize senior housing and offering much more for our seniors 💔
They have come from a generation of work hard and retire, don't ask for help. God bless you Lindy for acknowledging his life. I live in Las Vegas and see it everywhere on every corner dang near. ❤❤❤ our world seems to see seniors as disposable humans 😢break my heart.

Lindy: That is a very sad story, and also, frightening. For women, especially, the situation is all too common. Our kids are grown and busy with their own lives. There was never a guarantee that they would take care of us when we got older. Dave's story is that of many elders nowadays. This is not the world in which we grew up ( I'm 73). Things seem out of control, and, prices/ rents are through the roof. A woman alone has a huge struggle. Please stay safe and well. I admire you immensely, and you are an inspiration to SO many of us. Hugs, Rosemarie ❤
Thank you lady, for honoring this poor man, and for bringing awareness.
How sad, and only those of us who know hardship truly understand. America is in this position thanks to the greed of the rich, getting richer and richer at the expense of the poor. They leave us with nothing, and they don't care.
The rich people have nothing to do with it. It's the evil politicians (Biden) that are doing this.
Exactly! It is NOT immigrants! Greedy Corporations! All lg corp are experiencing Record Profits!!!! Not so for the working or retired Joe. Greed! Taxes too low on the 1%. Many pay zero, trump! Greedy creeps. Poor Republicans and poor Democrats have in common the same problem! Not right or left. Not liberal vs Democrat. It is Bezos, musk, Zuckerberg, trump and the like who should be paying 50% tax at least instead of zero or 5%.
Exactly right! Income inequality has never been worse in this country. The rich own the politicians, and that's why they get everything. They don't want to pay taxes? They get another tax cut! Social security payments are a joke. Every time they go up, the Medicare premium rises to take it back again.
I'm in Canada and many seniors are in difficult situations. My son's mother-in-law worked her whole life and yet sometimes my son and his wife have to buy her groceries because her rent uses up almost all her money. I know it is hard for her to accept their help. She was always independent and supported her two daughters after her marriage broke down many years ago.
These stories are so common, women give everything to their marriage and children. The man leaves us for addiction or a younger model and we're left flapping in the wind

It may have been a massive stroke.
So great that we (in particular. California and other similar states) are so focused on helping illegal immigrants and their families yet we have our own most vulnerable citizens in these conditions. Focus on seniors first!
Its so sad how we treat our senior citizens. 😢
If you were born and raised in a European country your life expectancy will be 5 -6 years greater than that of a person living in America. That’s a key indicator of later in life support from countries that care. America is too busy spending $1 trillion on a bloated military
I'd be willing to bet there are so many more homeless Americans living in their cars but we can't get accurate #'s because so many of them can't even believe this is happening to them & *they are ashamed* folks....these are not your average homeless. Lindy. I’m living in a 5th wheel because my rent here outside of Houston went sky high. I can not afford to move back to CA. I’m 81. I’m in an RV park. Between rent and utilities I now spend about $1000. Per month compared to $2200. For rent alone. My income is a little less than $3000. When my husband died. My income went down by a little over $1000 per month. There are many empty buildings I see around that could be converted into senior housing. I was the Board Director of a nonprofit that specialized in helping disabled, Vets and low income people to get housing. Ironic. Huh?? I am too rich to qualify for any assistance. People dont understand that seniors pension and social security isnt adjusted based on current rates. So the wages were lower but there wasnt much inflation so the dollar stretched further but it may not have been enough to buy a home. Also some seniors who own homes are losing them due rising property taxes. Happening herevin central Tx.
That's when you get roommates to help each other out.

Every time I see senior citizens asking for help, I help them and will continue.
Too bad seniors are discredited/ disrespected in this country whereas in other countries, the elderly are honored , loved and cared for.
Invisible people! Thanks for telling their stories.
Thanks for the video, Lindy, and bringing this to our attention. Those of us who still have a home and security need to be made aware of the situation facing so many of our seniors. We see the homeless on the streets and we shake our heads, stereo-typing all homeless as drug addicted or mentally ill. What we don’t see are the seniors, the majority being women, who have worked hard all their lives caring for their families and usually working at a job. After retiring they find themselves on fixed incomes that do not keep pace with the rising costs of everything, especially housing, food and medical care. To NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, they often have to prioritize giving up medical care and food in order to keep a roof over their heads, until even that is no longer possible. As they wait for years for available low cost senior housing their only option is to live in their vehicles. These seniors are quiet, trying to be invisible, do not want to impose on others and definitely do not want to be a burden on anyone! I hope you can continue to contribute to our awareness by your interviews of others and your own experiences.
...these seniors are quiet, trying to be invisible, not wanting to impose or be a burden on anyone ...💯 EXACTLY!!!

Thank you for acknowledging this man and the plight of the low income elderly in this country. The lucky ones are those that have a vehicle. In my city in Northern California, I see many seniors on the streets without a vehicle. Also, there are those of us who have an apartment, have social security, do not qualify for low income housing and work so that we don't get too far behind on bills. I try not to worry too much about what happens if I can't work due to health or they raise the rent. Although, its not just the rent that is going up, its every single thing that we need to live. I am 67 and last year I bought a mini van "just in case". ✌

Rest in peace. It is a sad state for many who cannot afford a place to live.
The problem is we live too long, and have to survive for far too many years. Im going on 50 and feel like ive lived a decade too long already. Life is hard, and its far from fun after you get older and everyone dies.
So you hate yourself and want to die? I’m 59 and hope I live a long life in retirement. Seniors have to stop living in suburbs around the city, or in cities and move out in middle of nowhere on BLM or LTV lands or buy 1/4 to 1/2 acre of property and the school tax will be really cheap.
The elderly are not respected in this country! I am 72 years old. I have worked hard my whole life, but can't afford to live in a house on my social security, so I drive a 1996 class c rv.
