  • Looking for an affordable artist-grade starter set of gouache? This might just be for you! Today I a reviewing the Holbein set of 5 mixing set of gouache: amzn.to/3rTcxvZ
    This has 15ml tubes of primary Magenta, Yellow and Cyan as well as white and black. It also comes with a mixing guide that will be helpful to beginners.
    Pros:
    Price
    High quality
    Colors are designed to be fairly equal in strength so they mix easily.
    Pigment info on tubes
    Lightfast
    Cons:
    None, if I had to pick something the magenta and yellow are not fully opaque but it doesn't cause any issue when mixing or painting.
    Bottom Line: I can't find anything wrong with this set. You can't beat it for the price and the limited selection of color will make you a better painter. Amazon has the best price: amzn.to/3rTcxvZ

    I work at a local art supply store and it sucks how it's impossible to match Amazon prices 😭 like there's nothing we can do about it but ask our suppliers for better discounts. And of course I would never judge someone for buying things for lower prices where you can find them. Not everyone can afford to shop local on principal alone.
    But yeah, whenever you see local art supply stores charging more than Amazon, Blick, or Jerry's, it's never our attempts to price gauge or overvalue stuff, we just can't get things for the same discounts big box stores can, and we have to make enough money to keep existing.
    Love the Holbein gouaches. CMY primary palettes are my favorite too.

      agree. Thats why I don't grudge my local art store. The lady who runs it is awful though, sneery and bad-tempered. when her son helps her out, he is awesome. So just hang around till he is in. I use both Amazon and her store.

    Funny thing is, I recently ordered the primary magenta and the primary yellow from blick, because I was running low on my tubes of W&N (primary yellow and permanent rose), and Holbein happened to be a dollar cheaper. So I can confirm that Blick absolutely sells Holbein gouache, lol.

    Great review! I was looking to upgrade from my 56 jelly gouache set as I'm running low on core colors that I mix with all the time and haven't touched a lot of the convenience colors. I was leaning towards the Daniel Smith primary set, but I wasn't confident that I could get a clean purple or a bright spring green, so I bought this Holbein set instead. You've really given me confidence that I made the right choice! I think I'll do much better with a limited palette, and I look forward to reclaiming the table space! I'm putting them in an air-tight travel palette with silicone seal, so that should be just as convenient as the jelly gouache set!

    Lindsay, that is a stunning gouache still life! I'm so impressed with how realistic the knife came out. I have a dozen hand-picked Holbine Irodori gouache tubes that my SIL picked up for me, in Japan. They are so brilliantly pigmented and I love how well they all mix. This gouache has spoiled me rotten.

    • @kristiw.1823
      @kristiw.1823 Před 11 měsíci +2

      @@thefrugalcrafter I don't think it's different in formula, just the color palettes they've created for different seasons. @OtoKano did a really helpful review of the Irodori sets, and I base most of my collection on her color recommendations. Even tho I broke a lot of the "rules" in terms of selecting for good mixability, the flexibility of these colors really astonished me. After watercolor being my primary media, these gouache paints are so forgiving!

    Not sure if you mention it, but these colors are what printer inks use as the primaries for ink jet printers and they were also used for printing older magazine and other printer color blends. CMYK. It's fun to compare how these blend differently than the traditional red, blue, and yellow triad often taught to beginners in art classes. There are often great purist fusses over which system is "correct". They both work wonderfully (actually many " systems" have been developed over the years). It's great to have so many choices of what you may want to use.

    This is a great and useful review. I was impressed that these colors made the range of browns that you showed. I’m guessing the very pure pigments make that possible. If I get this set, I will still get an extra large tube of white, which, in gouaches, I run out of first.
    Do you know those weekly pill boxes with lids? If you have a largish, old one, it works well for gouache.

    This looks like a great set. I have a 12 set of Spring colors (they have sets for each season) and the colors are beautiful, but I do find it a little difficult to use as I am just learning gouache and am more used to mixing my colors in watercolor. One thing I read and tried is that colored pencil doesn’t layer on top of the Holbein gouache well, even my Prismacolors. If I could do it again I would probably start with this set, but I’ll keep playing with what I have for now.

Similar situation for Winsor & Newton as well, not a huge fan of the watercolors (not that they are bad i just like other brands so much more), but I love their Gouache! I got this but haven't messed with it. I always loved Holbein.
    @Lindsay BTW I got the 36 Mei Ling set for 16. Something on Amazon today.

      Sweet! That's cheaper than Prime Day! I just swatched my new set out alongside my old set and they seem to be identical except for one red that was a touch different.

    Any recommendations on brushes to use with gouache?

    • @elvenham1

      Any soft/medium synthetic brush works well. I enjoy using flats, filberts, and small, stiffer rounds with gouache. I'd recommend to not use more delicate watercolor brushes.

      Maybe. I was told that like their colour pencils it is actually pretty good for student watercolors. I haven't bought it myself though so I do not know. Debating about it.

      Those are definitely tomatoes! But I know what you mean - when she’s talking about “oranges” in the sense of the different shades of the orange colour it sounds like she’s referring to the subject of the painting 😊

    The biggest con is the white dries horribly to a grainy consistency, and wherein the grains don't rewet. It's so bad, I have put it aside to use only fresh out of the tube. I will use Himi instead. But I otherwise like the mixing set. Beware of Holbein magentas. The one in this set is made with PR122 and is great. The magenta in the 12 sets and higher is made from a fluorescent pigment, as is the violet. And Holbein changes its formula on paints without making it obvious. I have two small tubes of turquoise, same product number, different mixes. Blick has good pigment information on everything but Irodori, but I don't know if they keep up with the sneaky pigment changes. Irodori is weird, because some of the paints contain mixes of two lightfast pigments and one not, so the effect of that is a mystery. I do love Holbein gouaches, bright, pretty, smooth, and if you're wary and careful, okay in the lightfastness arena.

    Omg 25 dollars 😭 the price is now around 40 now. Even though I have prime the Japan import is an additional 10 for shipping making it 50. I feel like this is beyond inflation 🫣

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I think the price was artificially low when I bought them because I stopped in a brick and morter art store and the set was $45. I am mad I didn't hmget the 24 set for $85 back then because now it is $195!

    • @dkstamberose
      @dkstamberose Před 5 měsíci

      @@thefrugalcrafterahh that would make sense! And oof, I got the 24 set when it was 130 😣 I can’t believe it used to be 85 dollars!! Strangely the 24 set doesn’t include the primaries (primary cyan, primary magenta and primary yellow) so I am eager to get the mixing set. After working with such large color palettes for so long I’m excited to work with something more limited, but with a wide range of possibilities! Thank you for reviewing this set ☺️✨
