    Welcome to chapter nine of the Porta Jon build! In this video I tackle the bottom coat portion of the project!
    The boat is a 1232 aluminum jon boat and the bottom coat I will be applying is Fasco Super Slick epoxy bottom coat. I heard great things about this product and wanted to give it a try on my personal jon boat side project.
    In this video I will cover a variety of things-
    -Why use bottom coat and what is it?
    - How to prep the boat bottom properly, including rivet replacement
    -Taping and cleaning
    - Product and product knowledge
    - Mixing bottom coat epoxy properly
    - Application
    -What I would do differently after applying for first time
    - Tools and materials needed
    - Tips and tricks
    -Testing the boat on the water
    -Final thoughts
    This epoxy bottom coat project turned out great on my aluminum 12 foot portable jon boat. Very excited to share this video with you covering everything I did and what I learned. Enjoy.

      I was so close, man. It was pretty stupid to leave it outside but never considered it not curing and dew getting in it. Then, I didn't know how I'd recover to make a fluid video given the circumstances. Almost gave up. Then I thought, maybe the audience could benefit from my mistake if I edited it properly.
      Fun fact for first comment- I actually applied the first coat in October of 2021. The boat sat after the incident for that winter into spring 2022 until sanded. Then, 2nd recoat was done in September of 2022, then final drone footage and testing shot in February 2023. To say this project has been a long time coming or a side project is an understatement at this point. There are plenty of boats to work on around here!
      I'm glad to finally get this out!!! Thanks for the support.

    I recently coated a 1652 Jon boat with fasco and did the whole outside. I really agree with all of the advice given here. Especially the choice of applicator I used brushes bc the rollers I tried didn’t leave a good finish, but the roller looks like it worked really good in the video. So maybe it was just the rollers I was using.

    • @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
      @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats  Před rokem +1

      Yeah man it was like night and day just by using a different roller. Also its way more workable in application in thin coats by applying from tray and not pouring and spreading like i had seen and heard so many others do.

    Best part is that you remedied your mistakes and showed a successful end result. Nothing about your "before and after" performance evaluation is scientific because it's the proverbial " apples to oranges" comparison. It's overly obvious that the coating dictates improved resistance factors and considering the drop in speed is nominal against the added weight, the coating is successful. Thanks for sharing.

    • @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
      @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for the great response! Like i said in the video, I'd like to do a true before/after bottom coat test one day. Even with that, there are so many small variables that could affect speed changes unless it was considerably noticeable, im not sure you could pinpoint it one way or another. Another thought I've had is that perhaps the epoxy won't shine at low speeds. It was designed for air boats, so perhaps significant speed increases can be seen at higher top speeds on boats that can actually get on plane. Who knows?

    Interesting stuff and a good job on the video, you might have found your speed losses in the motor and electrical systems or possibly from weight gains also, but I would have been interested in the epoxies durability and possibly if it offers protection from electrolysis around the transom from the motor.

  • @herewegofans
    @herewegofans Před rokem +1

    Anthony, can you share how this [or other] bottom epoxy holds up to truck bed and bank sliding? Do the high points of the boat bottom get scratched off quickly or it has been durable? Looking to add something slick to a 1444 build and second highest reason if durability from transport on off scrapes and scratches, to the drag and sliding for access to rampless ponds or marsh. I haven't seen anyone show a real test in that they use their boat for a year [whatever period], each week [defining the use amount the boat actually gets], trailerless, to access what type of water crossing what type of surfaces with, and finally the before, hoping mid use, and after shots of the bottom finish. I have lots of sand, muck, and rip rap dot rock I cross to gain access to low/no pressure areas and fish. My JB is getting a whooping from these crossing so I am investigating what actually works. Thanks again, you rock.

      The reservoirs are for drinking water, hence, no gas outboards. Its my choice to go there or not. Most guys use kayaks. I prefer the rednecks with paychecks method of a tiny boat with an electric outboard. These lakes are well managed, big bass, and very quiet. I'd rather go here to peacefully fish for tanks than the other option of going to the big lakes in Ga (Oconee, Hartwell, Lanier) and compete with every other 100K $ bass boat running 90mph and millions of wake board boats and party boats blasting rap music and creating massive wakes every 30 seconds. At the end of the day I'd rather fish electric only reservoirs than the bigger lakes and the electric outboard really isn't "that much" to me, $ is relative to the individual I suppose.

    That super slick stuff is garbage, it dries on like glass and makes it heavier, and cracks off in chunks. Gator glide is wayyy better, it keeps an oxygen layer in between the boat and doesn’t crack easy, I’ve had it on my boat for 3 years now no complaints.

    • @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
      @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats  Před 2 měsíci

      Makes it heavier? lol. It, along with Gator Glide, can weigh no more than the volume of the quart, ounces....If you prefer to use a product that takes one month to apply, by all means use it. Sounds to me that if you in fact did use Super Slick, and it failed, it was an installer issue. I literally know 30 guys with this on their boats, including multiple boats of my own. No issues. And what the hell are you talking about oxygen layer? The old wives tail comparing the orange peel to golf ball demples creating micro bubbles which creates better hydro dynamics? If that were true every one would just use bed liner and be done with it.

I personally don’t have experience with it but long story short guy at copperhead says it’s awful and doesn’t even compare to gator glide. And no it doesn’t take a month to apply, takes about 3hrs to do properly on a sunny day. iv installed gator glide on all of my boats and had no issues and it works great. I’m sure it’s not terrible for the price but I’d just spend the extra $100 and get gator glide.

      For paint to proper stick to all that you'd need to sand it or grind it all, then clean it properly. Otherwise it will just peel off. If your going to do all that, might as well just do the bottom the proper way. But that's just me. You do you.
