These Hungarian Horsemen Predated the American Cowboy

  • Before cowboys roamed the American West, there were Hungary’s Csikós. And on the Puszta-the country’s great plain-these traditional horsemen carry on their legacy. For centuries, whip-cracking horsemen in Hungary have been caring for their horses and cattle while practicing death-defying riding. The riders live in relative isolation in ranches that dot the plains. Although only a few Csikós are left in the region, Adam Bordás and his father János are keeping this proud tradition alive.

Hungarians, or Magyars, are distant relatives of Finns and Estonians, and are descended from Uralic peoples, who come from the Ural mountain area, and share little to no heritage with other europeans. They are in no way related to mongols, and only dress like them by coincidence, although Mongolian influence should not be ruled out, given that they were under their rule, at one point.
Edit: The Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian languages are all in the Uralic language family, separate from Indo-European languages, which all European languages except Basque belong to, and the Turkic family, which the Kazakh language is related too.
