In case this wasn't fully clear in the video: probably the biggest weakness of this camera is it has a slightly narrow field of view. For normal use, it's ok, but it doesn't have the Superview-like look that some pilots prefer. But the real problem comes when you try to stabilize it, since stabilization always requires zooming in. You have a lot less flexibility when using gyroflow with this camera than you would if it had a wider lens. But it's still a really solid choice for a lot of people!

Of course you're right that stabilization always costs you FOV but I think you went a too high with the smoothness setting to get a good result. Also, unless you use key framing you probably should use dynamic zoom.
Joshua, Gyroflow can apply a "superview" like effect as well. I believe it was Albert Kim, or maybe AndyRC... Who showed it.
Run Niek"s Superview script(non-linear stretch) on it first then Gyroflow it.
@@AndyDreadFPV don't do that. Gyroflow needs to first correct for all non-linearities before it can do the stabilization. That's what the lens profile is for.
You don't need to pick an ND filter depending on good luck! Use your cell phone and an app like photo light meter. You are old enough to remember how to shoot film so use film photography tools! 😃 Set ISO to 100, Shutter speed to 30 and place ND filters on the phone camera to find the right one looking at the F number. As far as this camera is the "swan song" of the IMX 377, the F number must be 2.8. So pick an ND which at ISO 100 and SS 30 will show F number around 2.8. Easy and for free :)

FINALLY someone who got this whole FPV-camera concept right. No battery, SD card, good image quality, ND-Filters. The QR codes are also such a bless for a quick workflow - waiting for cams like the in stra 360 go2 to connect is a nightmare. And man... no battery running out within 2 packs or memory getting full after 4 packs like the GO2... it's such a hassle to produce with that cam >.<
For freestyle quads maybe a rugged version of this whould be cool but a 3D print will likely do. Otherwise I feel like they nailed it. Love it! Now they just have to get a few details right like higher bitrate and wider FOV for the next version while we fly this one!

Thank you for bringing some rational ideas to this hobby! This camera is a real winner, forget the price point, the image on this Pro 4K is great, and it has stabilization! not quite hyperflow but still, it looked good to me. Now add in that it is $80, that is too good to pass up. When i go to buy mine in a week or 2 i will be coming back here to click through so you get the pay that you deserve, thanks for your great videos!
I think his was an excellent video because sometimes i dont know how to setup cameras so from there we can set it up and if we dont like something we can always go back in setting and fix it thank u JB.

Thanks JB for all you do! Since I discovered your channel nearly a year and a half, maybe 2 years ago, I have obsessed over this hobby and have now built something like 6 quads! And honestly, this stuff has changed my life for the better. Once I realized that you were putting out enough detailed content that I could actually pick up on this stuff, that's when and why I really made the decision the jump in. So thanks! As far as the camera goes: this one looks cool but I bought the runcam orange awhile back and after my first crash into a puddle in a field, it never turned on again lol. So I've come to the conclusion that it's better to just spend more and get the waterproof option with insurance. Currently fly the action 2 and love it! But I have the hero 8 for my 6 inch and the One RS for low light. Thanks again JB!!
What I thought was kind of neat that you didn't touch on, was that you can set up camera controls in Betaflight if you wire it to the FC. Mine is suppose to be here today and I can't wait to try it out on my Cinelog35.
The UART control works exactly like a button press and you don't get any feedback if the command was received and if it is recording or not. It's very easy to stop the recording instead of starting it because you had already stared it earlier and forgot. You end up having to look at the LED anyway at which point you might as wel start/stop the recording with the button. It's basically a useless feature. Runcam should work with the BF devs to create a better protocol for this use case.

My runcam thumb pro is here in my city, just not delivered as yet, but possibly today, and I think that it’s probably the best compromise of quality and light weight out there at the moment. I don’t need the best footage around and can’t afford a camera like the GoPro hero 10 or even an older model GoPro, so I’m happy with my decision to get the thumb pro, just the light weight was one of my main reasons as far as my choice goes. I’ve downloaded the gyroflow program and just need to start practising on its use. Thanks again Joshua for another informative video, I’ve learnt something today lol.

Fit what I wanted. An inexpensive, light, camera, that makes decent video. This one fit the bill. Bought it and Joshua's review is spot on. Certainly not a contender for GoPro or Insta360, but for simple videos to post online. Perfect. If I need full size camera I will use my Cinelog 35. For little drones or LR drones, its a good fit. That little doohickey for the power. Another nice goodie. Now I don't have to wire power up to every drone for a camera. I plug in to the battery balance lead, and run it to the camera. BTW, it solves a problem on some series of FC who's 5v pads aren't always a stable 5v.
I hope to get mine in the air this weekend, great review and thanks for the iFlight balance connector recommendation.

Picking up one of these for an FPV rig for airsoft. It's light enough to attach to my mask and not be felt. And gives good enough image quality for my needs.
For the average person like myself, these are great budget camera's.

My normal lens cover came off the very first time I hit something, I spent 20 minutes trying to find it in a field but it’s gone forever! Just a quick warning for those who will be buying the ND filters!
Also of note the SD card can come loose inside the camera as it’s not clipped in place, annoyingly the camera will flash record like normal even though there is no SD card in place.
Try a tiny length of tape around the lens where it connects to the camera as for the sd card use a small ball of bluetak and press it onto the end of the sd and camera board if its an issue. Just a couple quick hacks that might help ya 😉
If there is no sd card, the red led will flash more quickly compared to the normal recording mode.
I picked up a used Insta360 Go2 for $155 shipped with power mount, and I love almost everything about it. I do wish it had a MicroSD slot, but the combination of stabilization and portability works fantastic.
Seems a good tiny cam for an great price. I hope they are doing an update and add "2.7k / 30fps" mode!

Some feedback from a videographer if you're interested:
- For some reason the bass in your voice was particularly loud/boomy on the first setup of this video. A simple EQ should mostly fix that.
- The reason you want to use a sensor's native ISO is to get the best image quality. Raising the ISO introduces noise and decreases dynamic range. On a bright and sunny day, you're likely going to get zero motion blur as there is so much light that even with the sensor at base/native ISO, the shutter has to compensate greatly, usually around 1/4000th shutter speed for proper exposure. Towards the evening when it starts to get darker outside, you'll start to get motion blur as the shutter comes closer to 1/50 to 1/120 of a second for proper exposure.
- The two frames you compared weren't the best to compare as you had direct sunlight in one of them which caused flaring and will decrease contrast greatly.

I have a naked rc5o and it has 2x 20x20 boards inside and can also run a usb the aux so you can use it as your fpv feed while recording 4k
There is a big difference still from the standard and flat. The stills you referenced where, one without lens flare and one with lens flare. Lens flare like that will washout and image and make it loose contrast and detail. Give it another shot with an overcast day or in shadows or with sun behind quad.

My first venture into recording footage better than the analogue FPV DVR was the Turbowing Cyclops 3, a tiny camera which records 720p30 with audio, it also has analogue video out but that 30fps (it's not interlaced 60fps like traditional analogue NTSc cameras) 16:9 squashed into 4:3 that my goggles do is not nice, and the latency on the analogue output is almost too much to fly with, so they were for recording only.
Lots of early flights on my chan with those cameras, still have them, was so nice to be able to fly micros and get footage better than analogue goggle DVR.
I think this is a worthy upgrade to my original Mobius :)

I’m still on the Hero 5 Session and I’m finally starting to get jealous of of the newer stuff. I have 3 H5 Sessions left and I might just sell them for a Bones or the DJI Action 2. The new Runcams look like fantastic budget options though. Definitely much better than the original Session clones they used to sell.

Hey Joshua. I’m sure there’s a few different step down modules out there but I used this one listed below for a project. You can tap in off a 3s, giving you different choice output. Search it as listed below on eBay. Thanks I gotta have this.

If you need to see a preview of the footage, the thumb can work as a usb webcam when plugged into usb (I use a usb-c to micro-usb cable and an app on my phone), I expect the same can be said about the thumb pro but if someone who owns it could confirm that would be good.
It still works on thumb pro but you need to short press the button to switch it from u disc mode to PCCAM.
@@RunCamFPV thanks, I only have the original thumb for now and I love using it with a 75mm whoop to get through the tightest gaps. It's a great camera.

I used a camera OSD joystick wire to power the Thumb on a second quad I want to fly with it.
The plug fits, just keep in mind wich wire goes to 5V and GND.
After a few builds/cams I have a few lying around and my brain went 'wait a minute".
I'll protect the wire under the uma/Flywoo lipo pad, and used electrical tape on the back of the thumb (also over the SD cover)
Not electrical tape tough... Damnit..
I'm waiting for the Thumb Pro to come in the mail and really excited it can be operated trough a UART.

How does the Runcam Thumb Pro 4k compare to a DJI onboard 1080p video? If you already have a DJI air Unit recording onboard is there any reason to run something like the Runcam Thumb Pro 4k?

@Joshua Bardwell, if you're on 3S you can use a buck converter with a 3S balance lead extension cable... just clip one, hook it up to a buck converter and then take that 5V out.

There's an important difference in specs comparing to the 5 oranje. This one doesn't do 4k XV. So, in 4k you don't use all of the 4:3 sensor. I would say that it isn't as fast handling changes in light as the Oranje, but I don't have any of them, it's just from what I see in youtube. In some videos it looks better then others so, maybe i's just settings. What do you think in that regard? I have the 5 black tho.
I would have liked to see the "Hawkeye Firefly Lite 2" too, in this comparison! Worse or better?
The other funny thing you can do with gyroflow is stabilizing your DVR (yes, from your drone camera like a caddx vista), by using the gyro data from your blackbox. Since the DVR is 720p and because it will crop for the needs of the stabilization, the quality won't be that top notch. But for a quick upload in a social media story, that'll do the job.
I'd love to get a thumb pro. Too bad they were out of stock everywhere in about 10minutes. 😞
You don't necessarily have to solder it to your FC. You can use a connector to connect a tiny 5v voltage regulator IC to the balanced leads of your LiPo and it is done. Plus, you can remove the camera by simply disconnecting that connector.
I’ve enjoyed mine so far, although I’m really struggling to reduce the jello/judder I think it’s mostly down to the tpu mount that comes with the camera. Need to see if there are any better mounts available.
Maybe soft mount your motors too? A TPU gasket on both sides and threadlocker. Should also reduce FC gyro noise.
I designed around 15 different mounts varying from PLA to TPU and I found a combination of PLA, foam and rubber bands the best for my 1s 75mm woop.
Best casual sidenote on nd filter explanation I've heard. What is the sweetspot nd amount in your opinion? Maybe 8? Could you do a video about that?
It depends entirely on the amount of ambient light. If you are flying at dusk, then lock ISO at 100 will give plenty of motion blur -- maybe more than you need. In this case, no ND filter is needed. If you are flying at high noon on a cloudless day, ND16 may not even be enough.

In Gyro Flow and working with Stabilization, the utility achieves image stability by cropping or zooming the image? When you set to static, you are basically set a threshold throughout the recording?
When you choose static zoom it will zoom in to the level needed to keep the edges out of frame and keep that zoom level constant through the full video. For 99% of use cases it's best to use dynamic zooming. JB also used way higher smoothness than what's good for this camera.
Bought the runcam 5 orange for $110. Broke it after two crashes. Split right in half. If I would’ve bought a second one it would total $220. DJI Action 2 is now on sale for $280 and I can get it at best buy with insurance. If you’re serious about sending it hard skip the RC5
Generally speaking shutter speed controls motion blur whereas iso affects noise in the image.
yeah, ISO adjust the sensitivity of the sensor. Higher value, more sensitive, more noise in the signal.

considering peanut vs thumb pro: thumb pro has up to 256gb micro sd space and endless runtime, since it gets powered from the quad. no charging or downloading footage. Also: your editor had a remark on the peanuts color profile being shite for color grading if i remember correctly (maybe it was one of the insta cams, idk)? Would love to hear his opinion on the thumbs color profiles.
Yea I made balance lead cables from my smo 4k years ago & for the hero10 bones in 4s & 6s. Didn't want to snip iflight usb c plugs. Since bone says 6s

FPV volume doesn’t make it quieter, it adds a low pass filter that attenuates the high frequencies on the audio.
Also, using ISO 100 doesn’t increase motion blur, that has to do with the shutter speed. I guess in a roundabout way you’re not wrong because the lower the ISO in auto mode…the shutter speed will automatically reduce to let more light in… but that’s a strange way to explaining what ISO does.
I wasn't explaining ISO in an academic sense. I was explaining the reason why I lock ISO.
So by attenuate, you mean make them quieter?
@@stinkerton semantics. By saying makes it quieter that sounds like it’s talking about the overall master volume when it’s actually only lowering a certain set of frequencies.
@@KoelAnderson yeah, anyone can lower audio track volume. It takes a bit more skill to remaster audio using pass filters. This setting saves the effort that don't wish to remaster the audio themselves. I am on the fence if I would use this setting if I can filter it myself. It's good to maintain a raw source sometimes.
@@benargee 100% agreed. The mic/ raw audio is pretty bad from the RC5OR and assumingely the Thumb Pro. People have ‘modded’ it by putting a piece of silicone or similar to help muffle the noise a bit but using an EQ filter in post can fix it just fine, if not better than the EQ curve they have built in aka the FPV audio setting.
can this camera be used to transmit to your goggles thru the flight controller?
The connector is a standard thing, so it should be easily available with a little digging should you want to solder them to your FC.

I dot my Happymodell ELRS 5A Diamond FC, and out of the box the AIR mode doesn't work. If I enable it, after arming the whoop just flies away. If I desable AIR mode it seems to work fine!
I kinda wish you compared this with the Hawkeye Firefly X Lite 2 too.. that seems to be just as budget camera as the Runcam 5 Orange.. Nice review though

compare 4k to 1440p, thats kinda the thing.. these small cameras rarely can actually do 4k, they are optically limited.
1440p is the sweet spot for basically all sport cameras.
So how's the mic on the thumb? We know how the 5 does without the tape mod. Is the thumb the same? And can you do the tape mod on it?

It does not have a 5v regulator. You must give it 5v from an external regulator.
Mr.Bardwell, Is it not time to get a slightly more accurate scale for measuring these things? they are tiny, and the milligrams are starting to have significant impact on your results (IMO).
A smaller, 400g double decimal "drug dealer" scale would be excellent for these sub 100g, up to 400g parts.
Or just don't mind me.. I'm just a microkwad freestyler guy who wants a cam on my already 100g (with battery) build..
