I Took The World’s Shortest Flight

- I took the shortest flight in the world. The world’s shortest flight is scheduled for just one and a half minutes and flies between Westray and Papa Westray, two Scottish islands located on the Orkney Islands, off Scotland’s north coast.
The Westray to Papa Westray flight has been recognised by the Guinness World Records for being the shortest commercial flight in the world and has been in operation since 1967.
The flight between Westray and Papa Westray is operated by the Scottish airline Loganair and covers a distance of a mere 1.7 miles or 2.7 km.
The aircraft that flies the shortest flight route in the world is very small with space for the pilot and 8 passengers.
In this video, I share my experience of taking the shortest flight in the world in Scotland and also share with you my day spent exploring the beautiful Scottish Island of Papa Westray.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
You would make a terrific tour guide. Knowledge, Passion and the gift of communication
Keep them coming
Thank you, appreciate you watching!
You are such a charming human being. I grew up in Germany in the 80's. But the world has become such a dangerous place. Thank you for what you do. Please do everything you can to be safe.
Thanks for watching the videos!
Woo hoo indeed!! Ruth for "Ambassador of Scotland's Tourism Board" - that was great, and how you had such a glorious day made all the difference too, even though it was a tad dreek back at Kirkwall, your wonderful enthusiasm can never be dampened!
Thanks Andy, picking up the certificate was so exciting, even though it is just a piece of paper 😂
What a great series! Brilliantly filmed, edited and presented. Thanks for sharing all your hard work!!
Thank you Jason!
So many nice places so little time. Great fold up bike.
It looks very peaceful there. I like the old house and.
Ruth is truly living !!!
Beautiful to see
Your videos are so inspiring, thank you Ruth.
Thank you so much 😊
@@ruthaisling your welcome. I’m looking forward to the next video.
Just got back from Westray. It's a beautiful island. Been going there for over 17 years.
Your video account is brilliant.
It’s a beautiful place. Thank you 🙏
Another lovely, captivating video. I'm so pleased the weather was kind to you the islands looked stunning in the sunshine.
It was kind, I think I was lucky!
Thank goodness that weather blew away, the flight was quite reasonable, the ferry was even better at just £2.75. I love the downhill stretches when I 'm on my bike. Who needs to go abroad when there are beaches like that on your doorstep.
The beaches in Scotland are just incredible, especially when the sun is out!
I'd settle for warm rain, Ruth.
Loads of fun an interesting watch , another lovely video from you Ruth , you would make a great travel presenter
That's so nice of you, hopefully, this CZcams channel can be my own travel show 😂
An enjoyable video and you were lucky with the weather.👍👍
So lucky, especially after the wild weather the night before!
Looks like such a peaceful , beautiful place.
It was, highly recommend a visit!
Lovely for you Ruth 👍 , when I went there due to bad weather flights were grounded but another reason to revisit the Orkneys 😊.
Ah that's a shame! But as you say, a great reason to go back!
You were blessed with great weather on this day trip. And getting in so many forms of transport. Well done! and thanks for sharing this.
I was lucky! Thanks for watching 🙏
The design of the small airplane is very simple and functional, and the color pattern is beautiful with checks and white. There are no planes in Japan that fly such short distances, and I was lucky that I didn't have a round-trip ticket, so I was able to travel both by air and by sea. Scotland has small elevation differences, making it ideal for cycling.
It was nice to experience both the flight and the ferry. I heard Japan's shortest flight is between Minami-daito and Kita-daito, maybe you should try it sometime! I don't know how long it is though. I've always wanted to visit those two islands, maybe someday!
@@ruthaisling Nice idea!
This is the Loganair tartan my friend. 😊
Another fab video Ruth. Loving watching your journeys.
Thanks so much 😊
Great Video Ruth, that beach was stunning
Thanks Stuart, the beaches in Scotland continue to amaze me!
Hey Ruth! Lovely video, thanks for bringing me along!
Fabulous video, thank you for sharing your travels x
Thanks for watching Alison!
Love your videos. always so interesting. I'm very curious about Scotland as my Mother's grandfather was from Scotland, came to Canada in early 1800. Steve
Have you ever been to Scotland to visit?
Thanks Ruth for another superb video with lots of facts and information. I appreciate the time you must spend videoing and editing.
Thank you so much!
Another cracking video Ruth.
Thanks!
That beach looked so inspiring as is your videos. The production on your videos is top notch. Thank you Ruth for taking the time to share these magical moments with us all. You are a star!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment!
What a tranquel island you went to see Ruth. But, there are a lot of abandoned buildings around others especially the animals are incredible. thank u so much for making this video.
Thanks for watching!
Well what can I say Ruth! You've done it again. Another cracking vlog. Great information as with all your vlogs. ❤
Thank you - glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Hi Ruth. I met you on Shetland. Such good videos. Thank you.
I remember! Did you enjoy your cycling trip there?
@@ruthaisling I went to St. Ninians tombolo on the absolute best day and then went to meet my friends. Such wonderful friendly Shetland locals. Keep on making your videos. Excellent.
Another great video, Ruth.
Thanks Alastair!
you landed lucky with the weather👌
I really did, especially after the thunder and lightning! 😂
You've excelled yourself this time............. what a fantastic video............... thank you.
Thank you Leslie! 😀
I used to jump out of and Islander alot when i used to skydive . Great plane but smallest planes were a Piper Lance and a Cessna 182 . Very interesting.
Once again a great video. Your videos made me want to visit Scotland so much!
I'm so glad to hear that, please visit sometime!
You seem to run into a lot of English people up in Scotland in your videos, from the airline guy here, to the ones with the ferries in previous videos. I'd have thought they'd almost all be Scottish!
What a day! I'd love to hear more about the bike too, if you're inclined.
Maybe I can introduce about it more in a future video. It's a second-hand Brompton bicycle
Ruth, If you enjoyed this flight, check out flying into Barra, in the Outer Hebrides, and landing on the beach! Barra might be too big to depend on your bicycle, but I hear the beaches and camp sites are beautiful. I spend time on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. In the 1700s many people emigrated there from Barra. Many of those still speak Gaelic.@@ruthaisling
Thank you Ruth, another fantastic vlog.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 👍
The smallest Aircraft I flew is was a Cessna 150 when learning to get my private pilots licence. It was an expensive process so I had joined the RAAF in 1972 as an electronics tech aiming for an engineering degree. I was going to continue in the RAAF but with one thing and another I gave it up to concentrate on my profession of choice.
Love Orkney and Papa Westray - took the ferry in 2005 and visited the Knap of Howar and St. Boniface! Didn't see the museum though. Great idea with the bike.
The museum is pretty hidden, just before you walk down to the Knap of Howar and part of the farm I think?
Cool! Very interesting, thanks. Cheer's from Milwaukee Wisconsin 🇺🇲
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loving all of your videos. Having been to Scotland twice in the past 6 years, I’m thoroughly enjoying the content. The smallest, albeit non-commercial, plane I’ve been on is a 4 passenger Piper from the 1950’s. Great video as always. Thank you 😊
4 passengers, wow!
Another fantastic video, thank you Ruth, hope you’re well?
I am thanks, hope you are too! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Ruth.
That is amazingly beautiful.
Btw you hsve beaten Steve Marsh to the punch as he has not managed to do that flight yet
You are certainly adding to my bucket list 😊😊
Hope you can visit soon!
OMG, I could sit for hours in that not so hidden bird hide :)
You've reminded me of a flight taken in a 4-seater in the airspace of Los Angeles CA. Yikes! What was I thinking?!
Wow a 4-seater!!!
Hi Ruth, thanks for sharing your journey with us. Beautiful view and I enjoyed it 😊
Hey you have left no stone unturned in the Orkney Islands, well done. Even a Certificate for the flight. I feel we need to return and check out the rest of the area. Great video, Cheers Mike🍷
Thanks Mike, Orkney is such a wonderful place!
Great journey taking the shortest route. Beautiful place. Tnx4sharing ✈️👍
Thanks for watching
Well done, another excellent vlog, following on from your super trips to Islay, Jura and Gigha, amongst others! Watched your fellow vlogger, Steve Marsh have the same flight cancelled about a month or so ago, much to his disappointment, so pleased the weather held up so well for you!!
Thank you, yes I was so lucky with the weather, especially after the unexpected thunder and lightening the night before!
love the islanders, such a good plane and as an orcadian of 50 plus years they have always been around, we get used to ferries being cancelled but the days they dont go, you think, might be a bit windy the day then, never done that flight but been in them a few times, the one from wick was interesting but thats a story for another day
Loved this vlog. Thankyou for sharing. 💚
Thanks for watching Sheila!
Hello Ruth mick from Hull another lovely episode hope you are well and I will look forward to your next episode xx😊😊😊
Thanks Mick! Hope you are well too!
Superb videos, they look brilliant and have such useful & detailed information.
So nice of you to say! Thank you 🙏
Great videos as always ❤
What a great video Ruth, your videos give me that wee warm Scottish pride in my heart. What a beautiful country we come from. 🏴
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video, Scotland is so beautiful!
Nice you had a good day for it. Another excellent wee episode. x
Thanks for watching!
Hi Ruth, great video and you couldn’t have asked for better weather. As always I learnt some new….as didn’t know that the shortest flight in the world was there. Unfortunately I never made it to the Outer Hebrides last week, as I was trapped by landslides either side of Kilmartin. Never the less I enjoyed my time there as there’s so much to see. Maybe you could do a video on the Kilmartin Glen area and the refurbished museum. As the Glen has over 800 historic sites.
Enjoy your week and I’ll see you next video on Sunday. 😊x
It was a lucky day with the weather for sure. I'm sorry to hear about your trip not going to plan. I've never heard of Kilmartin, thanks for sharing! I hope you can get to the Outer Hebrides next time!
Hi, I have missed you so much after you leaving Japan, but I'm so happy to see you again.
お久しぶりです。I miss Japan, I'll be back again!
Brilliant video Ruth. I can't match an 8-seater but I flew from Ottawa to Montreal 9 years ago in the front row of a 22-seater which had no cockpit door. Great experience.
Sounds great!
Absolutely brilliant. Me and my Norwegian Forest Kat (traveling) are up for this.
Awesome!
Another fantastic example of your ability and skill, not only in the editing but your attention to detail. BTW you look different, hair up and in sleep mode.. nice tho😍
Thanks George, glad you enjoyed the video!
Really enjoying seeing places in Scotland I have never visited. When you asked about the smallest aircraft I guess like many older people like me who were in the Air Training Corps during the 60's and 70's it would be the 2 seat Chipmunk trainer. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby still use one to train the pilots who will be flying the BBMF Spitfires and Hurricane.
Oh wow, a 2-seater! Thanks for sharing!
My smallest aircraft was on a flight to Stornoway that got blown backwards as we neared the Isle of Lewis. As a side note I was working on Shetland and scheduled to be on the last flight on Friday evening which was the first flight of the day that just waited until evening to return but when it landed and they opened the cargo door to unload it the door was blown off. Luckily for me they managed to send another plane to Shetland in time for my escape back to Aberdeen for the weekend. I look forward to your next adventure.
Oh my goodness, what crazy experiences. I can't believe the door was blown off! 😯
Another great vlog Ruth! You got lucky with the weather.
The Islander was built on the Isle or Wight and is the most successful airliner the UK has built, with 1280 of them coming off the production line (some licence built in Romania). Infact production is to restart as there is such a demand for these versatile aircraft. As a comparison the Boeing 747 Jumbo production was finished at 1574 aircraft.
So interesting, thanks so much for sharing! I did keep an eye on the weather and tried to go on the day with the best forecast!
Love your videos I'm English but love Scotland I Holiday there every year Much Respect ✌️👍🇬🇧
Thanks so much for watching!
Great video Ruth! The shortest flight was really cool! My husband and I watched it on our TV. My husband said he would have loved to take a swim in that beautiful blue water too! Both islands are Just beautiful! Thanks! ❤
Thank you Mary. The water was so tempting!
This is freaking brilliant, thanks Ruth
It was fab!!
@@ruthaisling iv heard of this before but never really seen a flight
Wonderful video as always. Aren’t the beaches stunning! The water is tempting but we know it isn’t exactly a tropical temp! I have flown in helicopter that just took 2 passengers. I flew to the Aran Islands in Ireland in the early 1990s. I sat beside the pilot which thrilled me. My friend and 2 residents were behind us. Otherwise it was all groceries, mail, newspapers etc. I loved it. My friend hated it and kept her eyes closed.
Haha you are right, it's so deceiving, as soon as you go in the coldness of the water hits like a shock 😅 I've always wanted to visit the Aran Islands, would you recommend it?
Absolutely. We were only there a few days and were on Inis Mor. We walked, rented bikes and even went out in a pony and trap. The landscape and views are amazing, and the history is so interesting. I also remember that when we were there, they'd only had electricity for about 20 years which was amazing to us. If you get a chance, definitely go. @@ruthaisling
I hope the Scottish Tourist Board, is treating you with upmost respect! Superb Channel ❤ happy trails 👣
Glad you like the videos, thanks for watching! ❤️
Fabulous, I loved that, again you visited things I would. Steve Marsh must be so jealous for you having taken that flight, he's tried twice! I'll enjoy all your Scotland videos x
Thanks for watching 🙏 the flight was fantastic!
Always been on my list. Thanks for the preview.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy the flight when you do it!
Very interesting! Great video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 🙏
Would you like to take this flight?!

Hi, The smallest plane I have travelled was a 4 seater Cessna, I loved it. Much better than any jumbo. Cheers from Australia
Wow sounds amazing!
Lovely videos. My first flight was on an Islander 47 years ago from Wem airfield in Shropshire when I was 14. I was plonked in the Co.Pilots seat and I was both amazed and petrified at the same time. It was probably the most memorable flight in my lifetime. Great to see they're still flying. .
Keep up the good work. Love your videos and the history etc you put together. Xx
What a great experience!
Fun video! I’ve seen some of these spots in a Steve Marsh video, so it was interesting to see a different perspective. Smallest plane I’ve ever been in is a two seat Cessna 152, also a sailplane. Also once flew in a jet from San Jose to San Francisco, it was just a few minutes. Immediately after takeoff they told us to prepare for departure! It was part of a longer flight but there were people that got on in San Jose. Now I’m going to check out your channel 😊
Thanks James, a 2-seat plane must have been an experience!
@@ruthaisling yes, it was quite an experience, especially since I left out the detail that I was flying the plane myself as I was taking lessons. Eventually I was in the plane all by myself, solo. I haven’t flown in a long time but it certainly is something I’ll never forget.
I did that shortest ever flight way back in the '80s when I worked in the travel trade back then. Ended up in the 'jump' seat, beside the pilot! The most amazing experience and part of a super wee trip around the Highlands and Islands. Great vid, as usual Ruth. I like also that you flew one way and sailed back, I always like to vary my routes like that to make the homeward journey less boring and depressing than as if it's just back the way you came 😁
Very cool! I loved it 😊
@@ruthaisling landing on the beach in Barra was fun too. 🙂 High spot though was the jump seat experience when you have the headphones on and can hear the air traffic control talking the pilot down. I was nervous though not to distract him by saying a word 😁
Excellent videos😀
Thank you so much 😀
Is that flight even possible? The island is so beautiful!
I was so surpised too!
House construction seems to have stayed pretty much the same for 5000 years. If a design works, why change 🙂
Those short plane hops are definitely candidates for getting the first electric passenger planes, powered by local wind generated electricity too.
That would be very interesting to experience!
@@ruthaisling There are float plane air taxis being converted to electric in British Colombia where flight times might be 10-20 minutes. I think that will become the first passenger flights with electric planes. Orkney would be another fitting location.
There's been a project going on for five years now to convert the type of aircraft you were on, the Britten-Norman Islander, to electric propulsion. This makes sense, because - although venerable, it's a popular, reliable aircraft for short hops and skydiving, so there should be customers for an improved version. Electric engines could potentially bring the benefits of big reductions in noise, running costs, and air pollution.
Unfortunately the project seems to be going nowhere, producing mostly press releases. Like many green and worthy efforts it can get distracted by mission drift, adding more and more different goals and project partners, each with their own objectives.
I believe it's now switched from batteries as the electric energy source to hydrogen fuel cells. Cranfield Aerospace Solutions seems to be in charge, the programme is called Project Fresson.
Great videos!
Thanks!
Great video I Didn't know such a short flight existed. Smallest plane I travelled on was one of Brymon Airways flights from Plymouth Airport to St Helier Jersey which took about 40 minutes. Plymouth Airport is now long closed.
40 minutes is also a quick flight!
Terrific. Most enjoyable and illuminating. Thanks. Rmb5*
Thanks for watching!
Interesting video. I used to fly the A- model in Canada more than 30 years ago. Cheers from Norway.
Thanks for watching from Norway!
@@ruthaislingYou're welcome:) The airplane was noisy as hell. Note how close the propellers are to the fuselage. Imagine 15 hour days doing this and not making any money. 50 gal drums one way, passengers on the return trip For example. Making 10 cents pr mile as I remember it. Anyway, I enjoy Your videos. Cheers😊
This was a delight and interesting.
Thank you!
Stunning 😍

Thank you! 😊
Brilliant video as always!! Beautiful scenery. Hope all is well take care. Do you have a link to your folding bicycle please.
Thanks Peter! I have a second-hand Brompton bicycle - www.brompton.com/
Smallest plane I've been in was a cessna carrying pilot and 3 passengers from the deep south of Guyana over the jungle canopy up to Georgetown, with a stop off at Kaietaur falls. Interesting departure from there as heavy weather was coming in and the plane had to take off with a tail wind.
I remember going to the gliding centre at Portmoak back when I was at school, first time leaving the ground in any aircraft, great views of kinross-shire around Loch Leven although the strongest memory is the sudden stillness after the tow cable was released.
Wow, that sounds amazing, what an incredible experience, the views must have been spectacular!
Hi Ruth, my first ever aeroplane flight when I was 17, was in a similar islander. I took off in it, but I didn't hand in it, as I parachuted from it. I was a venture scount and the scouts arranged for 32 of us to train with the Red Devils in Aldershot on the Saturday and we parachuted from the plane on Sunday.
Oh my goodness, you parachuted from it! Wow, you are so brave!
