  • OOCL Japan 15.7m from Singapore. Next port Gdansk.
10am pilot boarding at the Sunk Pilot Station.
3 tugs ordered for berthing, planned port side to Felixstowe Berth 9.
    Svitzer Deben centre lead aft
Svitzer Kent starboard quarter then Port quarter then back round.
    Svitzer Shotley centre lead forward.
Original plan was starboard swing but the wind and tide had other plans all 3 tugs were on full power but little progress was made.
All tugs ease their power as the pilot puts Plan B into action and ran the engine ahead towards the Grisle Buoy and the Shotley Spit where they would swing to port. The Kent goes around the stern onto the port side ready to push around. Once swung, Kent moves back onto the starboard quarter and makes fast on the quarter while heading down the harbour.
Careful edging to the berth box, Deben and Shotley pull towards the berth with Kent mostly pushing full power on the quarter until they were entering the berth box. Deben and Shotley come around onto the starboard side in check positions to slow her for a soft landing alongside the fenders.
Final tie up 8 and 2 each end with springs then inshores.

Some days, things work better than others....I used to operate a ship-assist tug on SF bay, one night I was running light past the Long Wharf and noticed four Crowley 9's trying to push a large tanker up to the dock....and not making any progress at all as it was blowing off the dock pretty hard. I offered and the pilot just told me to pick a place and 'hook it up'....we were there for a couple of hours. Extra fee for the company I worked for though.

These tug boat pilots gotta be the most patient people on earth.

I second that. I like seeing the retirees. Probably former mariners.

Just wanted to check the alignment of the berth and the flow direction and strength of the Tidal stream .

Great video but thank goodness for the mute button - very annoying background noise .

Because of the terrible background sound, I paused the video and read the description. That was good enough information on the topic.

Amazing footage ,an amazing piece of engineering, just one point ,if these are imports do we export as much as on this vessel ,there was a time when we got a balance of trade statement each month ,have we exported more than we imported ,they even used to do it with exported and exported vehicles ,remember the term visible and invisible earnings , I think there would be grave concern if those figures now were released.

It might be too hard but I’d love to hear the pilot’s orders to the tugs overlaid on the video track instead of the music.

Oh god she's massive ! all that windage when trying to turn .

We believe that the tide was the main reason she didn't want to swing. It was 15 minutes from starting to ebb

This should be a four tugger with that draft, windage and environmental conditions.

    • @deanocable
      @deanocable  Před 2 lety +2

The OOCL Japan can hold 21,413 of the 20ft container.

How is it that in America it is considered offensive to refer to Asians as Oriental, but they themselves retain the name Orient Overseas? Just sayin'.

instead of that cheesy music you should’ve overlaid conversation between the tugboat operators then you would’ve had a really super video
