You have really brought back memories for me. through my teens I grew up on a farm. At least 75 New Zealand Whites each year. Also a very large garden. My grandmother would come and stay with us for two weeks in the fall to make spaghetti sauce. All of the back pieces of the rabbits went into Homemade sauce and then frozen. When it was time to be eaten the sauce went into an electric frying pan starting early morning. By supper time, the meat would fall off the bone, and meat and sauce was served on spaghetti. Our family as far out as second cousins would line up for Grandma's Spaghetti Sauce. - Days gone forever - only memories left.

So I did some searching and what I have found is (at least in my area ) A 2.75 to 3.0 pound wabbit sells for 27.84. Breaks down to just about 9.24 per pound.
then there was this one. 3 whole cleaned rabbits total of 6 to 8 pound for 60.00. Breaks down to (I avg at 7 pounds) 8.50 per pound.
Then this crazy one out of Spain. ONE Rabbit at 2.5 to 3.0 pounds for 44.95 YES 44.95 plus shipping this is almost 15.00 per pound. YES THI IS PRE COOKED then shipped frozen BUT STILL.
I would say you did pretty good at your price range.

But what surprised me the most is that there is no head ... You don't cook it to eat the brains? Rabbit's brain is truly a marvel in the mouth ...
But hey, it's all about taste and culture ... A lot of things are different on either side of the ocean.

    @Jezze2 Před rokem +1

After 8-10 weeks the feed-meat conversion slows down. Some people process fryers (softer meat) at 8 weeks; some push it out to 10 weeks. Of course there are some who prefer rabbit roasters (firmer meat), so they butcher after 12 weeks or later. Fryers vs roasters is a choice to make, just remember that roasters have a decreased average feed-meat conversion so the cost per pound will necessarily be higher.

Note: Sometimes it's not always about the costs of something, but the preference of the taste of the food and the nutrition. Example: Chicken liver. Its very cheap in cost, but very nutritional as it has iron. Love it fried up with onions. Then I make pata out of it with hard boiled eggs. 😋 yummy. G-D Bless and Stay Safe.

I use to raise rabbits for my little family. My husband would dispatch them and clean them, then it was up to me to quarter and package them. At that time in my life we didn't have plastic baggies. I had to use butcher paper. You don't see much butcher paper in the store these days as people mostly have the vacuum processing machines.

    • @richardmang2558

I also use paper to wrap larger pieces of meat for goat or lamb. I use Freezer Paper (that has a water proof coating on one side) which is different from Butcher Paper (that has no coating). So if you plan to store the meat for more than a few hours be sure to use Freezer Paper.

We raise meat rabbits as well as meat chickens...I have fixed rabbit stew, rabbit and noodles or dumplings, fried rabbit, roasted rabbit and one favorite I did was to take the whole rabbit and wrap up in bacon...pour honey over top and cook in oven covered and then remove foil and let the honey get thick...wow, it's good...IMO, the 'backstrap' is like white chicken breast...as far as texture...very good...wondering how fixing rabbits fore legs like chicken wings would be...season the same....and for the ribs, I leave the belly meat on and those (fresh) go into a freezer bag marked for broth...I keep chicken bones and rabbit bones and will make a huge pot of bone broth...then I can it...rabbit is a great meat to raise!

You two do a great job in showing us what to do. Great teaching for homesteading. Just veggies for me to grow. When my dad killed our chickens and I found out they were our dinner that night. The vacuum sealer‘s are nice, they’re great for marinade to because it helps pull all the water out. You can vacuum it a couple times first and it will really get the marinade down inside the meat.
That’s still a pretty good price, you couldn’t buy it for that much come on if you cut six weeks off of there that would drop that per pound price quite a bit a bit.

      czcams.com/video/tnUr6QgnYps/video.html another great one.
I have made both and never a complaint.
And no one ever dies from eating it. KIDDING

The cost is great. Rabbit meat is hard to find in a city and ordering it online is ridiculously expensive. Plus, when I get farm raised chicken, mostly Amish farms in Missouri, the chicken is smaller than Walmart's but better quality, better tasting, and you know they are clean from unnatural junk.

Hey Jacob & Alex I saw on Pinterest that someone hung a pumpkin in their chicken coop and it look like they really liked it.

Good information, Jacob. I think I could cut up and eat rabbit, as it looks much like cutting up a chicken. But I don't think I could do the killing and skinning part. I understand the necessity, but they are just too doggone cute and cuddly!
