In this video lecture/discussion from my Spring 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we finish our study of Cicero's work On the Nature of the Gods, focusing on Cotta the Academic philosopher's discourse in book 3. We examine Cotta's criticism of the arguments for the existence of God(s) made by his Epicurean and Stoic interlocutors, discuss Fideism in religious matters, look at his contention that reason is not always a good thing, and end by raising the Problem of Evil

The value of tradition is that it's kept some civilizations going while
    stable for hundreds of years.
And if ideas have sustained a civilization or civilizations for seventy plus generations
it seems like they have value.

I'd avoid hypostatizing tradition like that myself.

the universe does everything we do through us does it not?

+Kyle I suppose in a trivial sense, yes, since we're part of the universe. Whether the universe as a kind of agent works through us or not - that's a bigger issue . . .

People don't believe in Aphrodite because they lack faith.
