This Cockatoo Won't Go To Bed

  • Onni the baby umbrella cockatoo likes to sit on his dads shoulder and nap before bedtime while we both watch tv in bed. Scott fell asleep so I went to take Onni to his bedroom, but this crazy baby had other ideas. He quickly lept into the arms of his daddy and tried his best to hide from me. He doesn't understand that I can still see him when you can't see me!
    ****You should never ever sleep with any bird. EVER. Results can be catastrophic and even fatal for the bird. In this case, I was in bed NEXT to them and watching tv with them as always. Onni sits on top of Scotts arm/shoulder and when its Onnis time for bed or when Scott falls asleep I take the baby to his own bedroom for his safety. Bird bones are filled with air sacs, meaning they are hollow and fragile. Even a flopping hand/arm can break their legs, wings, etc. So you can imagine if you roll the wrong way, even a little.

    ***********DISCLAIMER**********: I'm pinning this message because people are not reading the description. Bird's should never, never, never sleep in bed with you (no matter how light you sleep or short the nap is). It will NOT end well for the bird. Scott and Onni aren't sleeping together. Many nights, the 3 of us watch TV in bed. Onni goes to his own bed (his night cage) in his own bedroom shortly after. In this video Scott fell asleep and Onni jumped off of Scotts shoulder and right into his arms. As you see, I retrieved him after catching this adorable moment.

      Hello Rebecca, you are right. Sometimes the bird fells asleep as well and if the human is moving it can smash the bird by the weight of its body. My parents have Cockatiel. He is often doing a nap with my stepfather while he is sitting on its belly. When my stepfather is moving half asleep the bird is becoming angry, because the movement is disturbs him, while he sleeps, too.

      Oh what's that? No? Not that developed yet?

    .... the disclaimer is very real............... when I was in 3rd grade I fell asleep and my bird at that time was walking around the house....... and going wherever it wanted.....and I rolled over and heard a shriek that woke me up... but it was too late.... I never cried so much in my life...my worst memory it must have been so painful for him, being squished by me.....even when I think about it as a grown ass adult almost in my 30's...... it was such a good and smart bird but my stupid ass let it walk/fly wherever and I stupidly fell asleep instead of putting him away. Anyway lesson is: never sleep with a bird, especially if its very attached to you since it may not sense danger when you are rolling over.

    • @RebeccaStout
      @RebeccaStout  Před 3 lety +176

      I have the perfect solution for you! Adopt a bird from a rescue. You won't be filled with thoughts like, geez did I just add to a pet trade I'm unsure of. Adopting you save a life and give the bird more freedom and happiness! At a shelter you meet all kinds of birds and the shelter mom/dad can help match you up. The birdie can pick you too. Do it. Go visit and play with the cuties and check it out regardless.
      PS. Do not get a cockatoo if you haven't owned other birds before for experience,, aren't home most of the time, live in an apart/condo, have a loud hyper home, cant afford high vet bills if something happens, cant keep the baby for the rest of your life. To raise one correctly they way it SHOULD be done is very hard. They arent like other birds
      Suggestion? A mini too. Lol. Cockatiels are snuggly and perfect.
