The V70 estate is an abject example of the rejuvenation of Volvos design language that was started by Peter Horbury who sadly died last week. This generation of V70 is probably when properly serviced one of the toughest and long lived cars you can own.

Have a ‘06 V70 2.4d 6mt, 255k miles on the clock now, has been doing 52 mpg average, solid car, very comfortable seats, unassuming car. Had the engine tuned, now does 220 hp / 355 ft/lbs. Makes it a fun car to drive. Best car i’ve had so far.
I had a couple of V70s, both ex police T5 versions and loved them. Had the P1 and the P2, which is the one in this video, and found both mega comfy, very practical and good looking. Not to mention hugely fast. Sounded great too, I do miss them.
I was a Saab guy until an injury in December meant i had to sell them all and get the first auto i could find. Just happened to be the same V70 as the video...although 132k. It was only supposed to be a short-term thing until recovery....but absolutely adore it. Regular servicing makes a huge difference, but if you have that...theyre absolutely bombproof!
Good Choice of car Mr Mustard, I think it’s a good transition from Rover to Volvo I like the V70 and S60 myself. A great carry all or family wagon and well built. Never had a modern Volvo but I have had a 240 saloon, 740 estate, that was like a small tank, but very roomy and practical, I even moved house using it to carry my stuff, very useful.
This is one of the finest cars ever to have existed. Some may even go as far as to say it's peak Volvo in terms of design, reliability and all-round everyday owner experience. I've had new and old cars and the Volvo has been out of everything the most pleasurable to own in terms of owner experience. I loved that car, and it felt special. It's a package you can't quite put your finger on but for some reason just feels right. I see that example suffered the Sunroof epidemic of the early 00s what happened to sunroofs? They were awesome and yet they disappeared... Don't forget to try a XC70, absolutely priceless in bad weather 😉
My 2003 V70 Euro3 manual has 242K miles on it, Religiously serviced by Volvo and Volvo indys by the previous owners, I do all my own maintenance on it as i am a retired vehicle tech and they are very straightforward to work on, At this mileage mine drives absolutely faultless, Not 1 squeak, Rattle or knock, Everything works as it should and i get over 50mpg on a run! Euro3 D5's sip fuel if they are well maintained.
I think that something that would make them better is fixing the few bits of the interior that are cheapy or wear out over time, but it's pretty nice inside otherwise. Also I get a few rattles so changing the assembly process so it's less likely to happen.
The best P2 Volvo V70 is the D5 Euro3 163bhp manual, Forget the auto's, They are ticking timebombs unless you have proof of regular transmission oil flushes which 99% haven't had because Volvo state that they are sealed for life and they are not! Forget the later Euro4 185BHP version, Complicated with swirl flaps, DPF etc and are worse on fuel. The downside of the P2 V70 is that they do rust, Check the front strut turrets and inner wings.
@@lrightythat's an excellent method which works. It's a pity manufacturers stopped putting dip sticks in auto boxes. Them saying these autos now have sealed for life units. Utter bullshit.
Are the autos fragile? Not heard that. My mate's old 850 T5 estate had well over 250k miles on it and in about 4 years he never changed the gearbox oil. It's no bad thing to do so of course but I genuinely haven't heard the auto can be troublesome.
@@skylined5534 there are sealed for life gearboxes that do indeed last a lifetime. But they're few and far between. Your friends example is one of them. The auto box on my car is sealed for life. But what is life? It can be read that the average life of a car is what 10 years? So it's fair enough that sealed for life is fine. However there are a helluva lot of much older cars. So one has to think a gearbox can not by distinction last longer than a lifetime without some servicing. The manufacturer of the gearbox in my car state themselves a service at around 60k miles. Yes the car manufacturer states for life. Go figure. Question. How long would you expect a solenoid to last? Solenoids are used in auto boxes.
@@skylined5534 850's use a different 4 speed autobox which was servicable and pretty strong the P2 volvos use a 'sealed for life' 5 speed, If you regularly perform a transmission flush on them you can prolong their life.
The P2 platform is quie bulletproof. I own a 2003 XC90 with the same D5 enigne. Don't knock the automatics. The Aisin transmissions are fine provided the fluid has been changed regularly. I can get mid 30s MPG on a run in my XC90 so you should get more with the V70.
I like these, the stone cold bargain of the estate/tourer world is though is the Insignia. Good looking & under appreciated, much better engines than its Mondeo competitor.
Don't forget to sew some leather patches on your cardigan sleeves and retrain as a geography teacher or open an antique shop if you buy one. The vast room to kip inside it will come in handy too when the boredom of it has sent you to sleep. 😉

Definitely the right spec there. Euro 3 pre dpf, manual transmission. Weird that there's no HubNut headlight wipers though. Mondeos are great but no 'interesting' diesels with more than 4 cylinders and they'd all be extremely rusty at this age. Interestingly the petrol versions are ulez friendly too.
You should get one, if you did get an alternative you'll wish you'd got the V70. And a good quality carpet is an essential which Rover sadly abandoned.
I currently have a 2004 d5 auto and I love it with 460000kms on the odometer. I would say to things I don’t like or regret Volvo misengineered… Steering curb circle distance approaching the distance earth moon and the room at the rear … I’m 1.85 and it’s quite of a small fit for such a large car. My sons 207 Peugeot has more space at the rear .. anyway it’s a very good and reliable car and engine. And luckily not a single issue with the aw50-51sn transmission which has quite a bad reputation. I really like these. Those 5 pots even sound superb in diesel 'flavour'. What about a late model Saab 9-5 Estate? Still quirkily Swedish even if the 'underpinnins' are GM. No bad thing of course as it means service and mechanical parts are in plentiful supply. Given that Saab are now sadly another defunct manufacturer that feels more of a natural progression to me. No interesting sounding engines though of course! I also like the alfa 159 wagon, great looking cars but more of a 'lifestyle' estate more akin to the 420 Tourer. So pretty though and no where near as fragile or unreliable as the internet would have you believe. Whatever you pick, (and I'm sure it's the Volvo, a great choice!) enjoy!
Cool car I like it. 😊 The Mondeo is a lovely car in high-spec. Around 2008 onwards. Not sure it would be your cup of tea though. I would like the slightly oddball Citroën C5 estate. I like the look and went in a lot new when I worked for Citroën so have soft spot for them. I think you might like a W204 C250 diesel Estate so maybe try that!
My V70 is 20 next October. 91,000 miles and running sweat. 2.0T manual. These cars are actually rare here in Ireland now, only a few for sale but usually high mileage, diesel or auto. The taupe leather does it for me and the comfort of the chairs is second to none!
My first car I ever had was a Rover. Loved it but it was the only one I ever owned. Many years later I find myself buying my first Volvo V70 this week. Excellent car where the flaws seem like nit picking. Drive on, Nigel. Get that motor!!
As I Saab 900 (OG) addict for almost 30 years I shifted to a V70 Petrol with the fabulous 2,5 turbo (209 HP) last year. Its a nice ansd comfy long distance-cruiser, lots of torque and a fantastic sound with the KME exhaust. It takes 8 l/100 km if you use him with care and 10 if you squeeze it. The Saab 900 is more "direct" and sportier, but I like the V70 so far. Only critics come for the enormous turning-circle, which makes city-traffic a pain in the ass sometimes.
That's two of us on the hunt for one of these then! Iv'e had an eBay saved search for ages looking for the right one. Your review has been super useful thanks. Definitely agree that the auto is preferable too. The only downside for me is they're a little heavy on the tax, but that's all really.
I agree with the tax thing, I pay now per month what I paid a year for my Astra diesel. There is one benefit to more tax though…..it means I don’t own an Astra anymore.
I've got the S60 D5 Auto and I love it, doesn't have nearly the same excellent boot. It's big but access to it sucks. Owned it 6 years and personally put 80,000 miles on it. If it wasn't for a mechanic fucking up a steering rack replacement i'd still be very much in love with it. You're welcome to try it out, mine's the 185bhp version though.
As you know I’m considering getting a Volvo - ideally a 940, but an 850 or classic V70 would do. Unlike you I really don’t like the front end of the later V70s. I think a V70 would suit you just fine - but you could also consider a Legacy.
All nice, but the 850 T5 in auto form is excellent! The R models are just too bloody pricey so a nice 2.3 turbo auto would do me nicely! Mind you, they're creeping up in value too. I can't believe I could have bought an R estate about 10 years ago for 2 grand... though it did want some work!

I have a P2 and the SE spec is pretty much all you need, i absolutely love it. I have the auto and yes it nice to have but personally i would sooner have a manual (not that ive driven a manual version of this) eventually im looking at converting to a manual. One thing i would say to check is the intercooler it seems to be a weak spot on these, if it sounds like a stream train on acceleration it will need doing (my replacement was £300 for parts + labour) overall these are pretty much a solid car and the engines are strong, mine once it goes in to 2nd will just shoot along like a freight train. I usually put VPower in mine my god it makes a difference so for umph its definitely worth and also keeping the engine clear (also giving it a good boot helps). As a word of warning parts arent the cheapest even when parts were cheaper 😂. If you get one just do the usual checks, FSH, no leaks, smoke etc. Hope this helps! ✌️
I have a p2 v70 with a t5, lowered with full bolt ons, bilstein b4, eibach springs, ipd sways, shemtek tune, trust me, if you get any turbo volvo, drive over to Shemtek solutions and have Shem tune it... hes a guru p.s. The autos are terrible, came with awful software that blew them all up. Manual is the way to go for these cars.
I had the newer shape V70 a 57plate and had a big crash in it and can only thank it's safety, I really messed the Kia up that pulled out on me like a tank hitting a cardboard box. I hit the Kia so hard the roof twisted and cracked the engine block. The volvo was still drivable somehow not even a coolant leak even though the radiator was pushed right over to the left
i had a rover 25 and 45 , in the end they are not good, the l series engine is ,but the cars are crap, i dont own a volvo but i bet the v70 is much much better, i went for a skoda octavia estate in the end, but the electrics are really bad
A few year back i owned a Volvo S80 52 plate 2.4...my was it thirsty.....Coventry to Liverpool and back on a full tank of fuel..it was so comfy, but to thirsty
I recently did Halifax to Luton & back to Halifax, in my 2002 S80 2.4 petrol ( manual) on £60 - just over 1/2 full tank@ 43.5 mpg, according to the cars' computer.

By the way, didn't Ford own Volvo from 1999 to 2010. V70 (and S80) from 2007 were built on the same platform as Mondeo and are said to share 80% of parts! 😀 Well I never! 😁

Personally i would get a Honda Accord Euro Estate in manual. Lovely.

I hit the Kia so hard the roof twisted and cracked the engine block. The volvo was still drivable somehow not even a coolant leak even though the radiator was pushed right over to the left
i had a rover 25 and 45 , in the end they are not good, the l series engine is ,but the cars are crap, i dont own a volvo but i bet the v70 is much much better, i went for a skoda octavia estate in the end, but the electrics are really bad
A Rover 75 Tourer would be a more suitable choice for you Paul, you'll definitely be visiting the fuel station more often with a V70.
They are lovely cars if you buy a good one - I enjoyed owning my S60, think I may have to try a V70 myself.
A few year back i owned a Volvo S80 52 plate 2.4...my was it thirsty.....Coventry to Liverpool and back on a full tank of fuel..it was so comfy, but to thirsty
I recently did Halifax to Luton & back to Halifax, in my 2002 S80 2.4 petrol ( manual) on £60 - just over 1/2 full tank@ 43.5 mpg, according to the cars' computer.

By the way, didn't Ford own Volvo from 1999 to 2010. V70 (and S80) from 2007 were built on the same platform as Mondeo and are said to share 80% of parts! 😀 Well I never! 😁
