      Thank you! I completely agree! I love these, too! I made a baby quilt for my cousin out of another one of my grandmother's quilts. Here's a link to that video: czcams.com/video/BXk_qk45Zpc/video.html

    What a wonderful way to save some of the quilt. I never worry about throwing out what you have to. The quilt is very damaged, so would you really want mouse dropping, or mold in another piece of your work? Don't stress Kris. Love this idea of a keepsake. Great job

      So true! I saved as much as I could, but the gross parts did go in the trash. I have a few more scraps that I may make into coasters or something. Thanks so much for watching!

    As you mentioned, the quilt was so damaged, you would not use it as a bed or sofa quilt. Making stockings ensures the quilt will be enjoyed and used during every Christmas season. Great way to remember your grandmother and her handwork!

      Thank you! I agree. I hate cutting up any quilt, but this was best for this particular quilt, I think. I hope they stay in the family for a long time now.

    This is perfect! I purchased a quilt from the late 1800’s with the hope of restoring it. Sadly, and on closer inspection, it’s just much too damaged. I had thought of using part of it for a Christmas stocking and your tutorial popped up! Lots of good tips:-) My plan is to not line it since I want the stocking to be floppy. I think it will be sturdy enough to hold up, but is there another reason to have a lining? I also think I want a cuff to show off the fabric on the underside of the quilt:-)

    I like the quilting of the block but think should have left the red ties on would have looked cute

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety

      I thought about doing that. I did mention it in the video, but I think that part got edited out (my editor-ME-can be cutthroat with the babbling 😀). I like the ties, but I wanted it to be quilted with the diagonal pattern to disguise some of the imperfections of the piecing, resulting in them looking straight and purposeful. I felt that honored my grandmother a bit more than leaving the ties in. It was a tough design choice that I thought about way to long. I agree-they would have been cute-but this is what I went with. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    This was done all the time. Old church brocade was used to sew dresses for saints. Fabric becomes old, we become old, we should accept that.

      Have you seen - I think Editha Sithar's idea - of the quilt jacket? I know this quilt has too tiny usable pieces, but maybe an idea for another old quilt. I love these Christmas stockings, especially the one with the lace!

      I have! Aren’t they wonderful? I love the idea of giving old quilts new life. It’s a great trend right now, as it was years ago. Everything old becomes new again. Thank you for watching and commenting, as always! I love your insight.

    will you label the stockings in some way so that the work your grandmother's did is remembered?

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 2 lety +1

      Great question! Yes. I am going to labels inside of the stockings. I was thinking about redoing the lining and sewing the label directly into that so it can’t be removed.
