  • In an insightful nightcap session BizNews founder with Alec Hogg at BNC#6 in Hermanus, Pick 'n Pay CEO Sean Summers shared the pivotal moments that led to his return to Pick 'n Pay, emphasizing the importance of caution and strategic decision-making in leadership. Reflecting on his career journey from a young training manager to CEO, Summers discussed the evolving landscape of retail, the enduring value of family-owned companies, and the imperative of creating meaningful customer experiences. He also addressed the challenges facing South African retail and advocated for civic engagement, urging individuals to make their voices heard through voting. Summers' wisdom and vision offer valuable insights for navigating the complexities of modern business and societal responsibilities.

100%. You are spot on Sean. I have been a PnP shopper for 45 years. The last five years I have started shopping at Checkers. The vibe at PnP has just changed. Seems to be a loss of love and that attention to detail/personal touch. Its almost like the staff have been reduced per store and that the current staff are unhappy and just dont care. Maybe a good time to buy some PnP shares! Good luck and I have no doubt you are the man for the job!! Look forward to being a more regular customer again

Same here. Shopped at PnP Constantia since it first opened but I shop at Checkers Constantia now because it's smaller, cosier, has quiet floors and a good vibe.
PnP Constantia is too big. No staff on the floor. Staff at the tills don't care. Sadly not a pleasant experience.
Edit: a real big peeve of mine at PnP Constantia is that they don't answer the phone. Ever!
      Checkers always answers their phone.

The late GREAT Raymond Ackerman's motto was always that the "CUSTOMER IS QUEEN", and he ran the business on the principle of the famous "4 LEGS OF THE TABLE" 1. ADMIN 2. MERCHANDISE 3. SALES PROMOTION/SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND 4. THE PEOPLE."
If any one of the legs was not "in sync," the table = the business was NOT in balance ❤.

Mr Summers. The key difference between PnP with Woolies, Checkers and Spar is simple. Level of service! Your workers simply don't know how to provid a good service in your stores. They are chit chatting, on their phones etc. You don't see that at Checkers or Woolworths. Please take your employees on a tour to your competitors.

But when there are retailers who are popping up who are selling the same milk at R7 cheaper for a 2L I know where I'm going.
Our butchery and vegitable shop are 30% cheaper than Pnp for better quality produce.
And now cross over shops are popping up that are doing meat and veg.
