  • Today we're discussing head-hopping. Some people think head-hopping and third-person omniscient are the same, but they're not! đŸ˜± I'd be happy to elaborate further on third-person omniscient if you're interested. There's a lot to cover, and I tried to keep it concise for this video.

I would love a third-person omniscient video. Also, do you think you could do a video about introspection? Thanks so much for this!

I too would love a 3rd person omniscient vs 3rd person limit video, particularly with head-hopping examples in those contexts.

I never really thought about how show vs tell would play into head hopping but it totally makes sense! I always think I'm good about not head hopping but now I can look for svt instances and tighten up my writing there to ensure there is no head hopping.
    Thank you!!

4:21 yessss!! Please, we would love that! I am writing in third person point of view and trying to writing it in omniscient perspective. But I am quite unsure and nervous about that. I have been writing about many people but have provided some "internal voice" or internal thought to my side characters. But have more on the main character. So I was thinking that I might be head hopping and I would really, really appreciate a video on 3rd limited vs. 3rd omniscientđŸ™â€

I love your easy writing tips.
Could you do a video on sentences, structure, variety, punctuation, figurative language... I don't know what's the term for that. Prose? I mean the actual writing part, how you get the images in your head on paper so it makes sense and the readers will enjoy reading.

I am not even a writer but I do love learning about it. Count me in for wanting a video on the different POVs. I think I know them when I'm seeing them, but I don't know all the official definitions.
This was also helpful to me as a reader. I've always had a hard time with books with multiple POVs when I can't tell who is speaking. I always assumed it was just me being dumb. But with some of the things you've said here, maybe authors have been doing some of that "head hopping" stuff and that's why I've been confused. Okay, maybe it's also partly me being dumb. But it gives me hope that it may not be ONLY that. :)

Okay, but this video has come in such clutch for me tho! I was literally thinking about how to distinguish third person omniscient and head hopping TODAY cause it has always been so confusing and this definitely helped me a lot (great example with your own book)! It's especially interesting to hear from the perspective of someone who is also an editor. I would love to see you do a video on third person omniscient as well!

Ah! I'm gonna chime in with the others about really appreciating a third person narrative video because I always preferred writing like that, but now I'm worried that the styles are blurring or it's not consistent. You're my go-to for advice about writing these days (haha and many earlier as well), so it would be super insightful! :>

I remember when I started writing, I was pretty sure I didn't head-hop (I did, though not a lot) but I still found places where I by accident slipped into what other characters knew, or thought, or felt. And that annoyed me so much when I realized it. XD

This was incredibly helpful! I love how you explain things. I have a followup question: If I am writing in 3rd person distant/Omnicient, how do I reconcile showing the character’s thoughts with avoiding filter words like “he thought” ? So that the narrator doesn’t slip into 3rd limited

    • @greggorsag9787

I’ve always found reading Harry Potter to be a great way to get a feel for third person limited. Because it’s SO long and you never (or almost never) get beyond Harry’s experience. Rowling even employed various devices to get around the limits of this form in such a long, complex narrative (remember the pensieve?). The first chapter, of course, is an exception, which also helps with the distinction. By the end of the 7th book, it’s impossible not to understand the narrative form, if only by osmosis. Lord of the Rings is similar for third party omniscient. Interestingly, in Tolkien there are definitely dominant points of view within the omniscient narrative (for example, by the end it’s clearly Sam’s tale, not Frodo’s). I believe otherwise it would become very distant from its characters as is, say, The White Stag. But the LoTR narrator is never limited.
It’s probably too in the weeds, but I’d enjoy a comparison of these two hyper-popular fantasy works with a focus on narrative point of view.

    Great advice.
Recently read a novel by the late MC Beaton. Enjoyed the book overall but she often hopped around the heads of characters in a single scene and it irritated me rather than confused me. I was left feeling that the author was ‘telling’ rather than ‘showing’ how the characters were feeling and thinking because it was the easiest and quickest option.
For me, I’d rather do the work of interpreting what characters are feeling and thinking by reading the author’s description of the characters’ speech and actions.
Not sure if you’ve covered this topic already but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on subtext and on-the-nose dialogue.

It's been 10 months since you put this out, but I hope you see this comment. Can you do a video on "How to tell what POV is best for your book."? "Why Omniscient/First/3rd Limited May Work Better" Sounds like a short series of videos that you can expand with more details.

does it count as head hopping if the characters are clearly showing what they are feeling on their faces or when you are describing multipule characters actions and there is no clear pov character at the time in the scene. For example, say you have a group of characters in one scene but there is no sentence which indicates we are in one character's head and we are just focusing on their actions. Does that count as head hopping.

Shame you can't see my comment as I seem to have been ghosted, for some reason. Just out of interest, I would take ''then'' out of your first line as it is superfluous.

But the real question is can you switch from 3rd person limited to omniscient in the middle of your story? No one will answer this question
