  • So where are the best places to live in Portugal? We have traveled through many areas of Portugal and fell in love with the Algarve. It has so much to offer, especially for those looking for a perfect place to retire or spend extended periods. Exploring from the east to the west coast we got a pretty good feel for what each city had to offer. We will discuss what we liked best about each location and the things we would consider negative. In the end, we will share with you our top three choices of where we could see living.

    Really helpful video. Good to know that the buses are good. Too bad about the trains. Been watching quite a few videos about areas of the Algarve and this is definitely one of the most useful ones I have seen. That´s so funny, so you picked as No 1, towns at either end of the Algarve. Hmm, maybe it should be Albufeira then, right in the middle and one you both picked as No 3. My feeling is Albufeira could be a good choice for myself, but I wonder if it might be too shut down/dead in winter... I guess many bars etc would shut, but other shops would be open for the many locals living there.

    Thanks for this very helpful, comprehensive video! I have the impression from other videos I've seen elsewhere that Vila Real de Santo António has a fairly sizeable year-round expat population so the businesses don't shut down in winter like some other smaller towns may do. But I haven't been there in winter and could be mistaken.

      Interesting that you reviewed No Loule shire. The biggest tourist spend in the Algarve. If you are looking to follow the trend in the Mediterranean, permanent residents are living in the towns in from the touristy coast.
      Loule, Second richest shire in the country. Extensive arts and Culture spend. Cleaner and better services than any other shire. The three exclusive areas, are on the beach with it's variable seasonal population but Loule is one that is year round.
      Agreed Tavira and Largos are great, but I have lived in the beachside, gost town winters and full to the brim in high season is a big negative. Having activities, services and facilities is more IMPORTANT for the happy life your viewers are seeking.
      Glad that you left it off the list. Thanks

    Great take on the Algarve. I can understand the attraction of the coast to anyone visiting the Algarve. But there certainly is a lot for nature lovers and those looking for outdoor activities moving north from the coastline to the slightly more inland side of the Algarve. Places like for example Alcoutim if you're on the East coast, or Querença, Alte or Salir if you're closer to Loule. Granted these places will be picturesque, but a lot quieter; and there will be the need to drive to the next biggest town for many of the services required.

      Hi Merrill - very good question! We definitely love the Algarve and can see that as place we will be back to for extended periods. Valencia was a great City, but for us a bit to big and to far from the water. Alicante, like the Algarve checked so many boxes for us but once again a bit bigger feel of a city. But for those looking for that bigger city beach town, Alicante should be a must see! Thank you so much for watching.

If large supermarket runs and sightseeing are part of the plan--of course a car may be required--but not convinced (from a living standpoint) a car is "essential" provided you're within walking distance of a train station and/or have access to local buses or taxis. This year we arrived for good and bought a really nice compact apartment a few minutes walk to the Square. We have settled in well and are enjoying the good weather, nice people and great beaches. We have the market across the road and the four main supermarkets a short walk away. We are also about ten minutes walk from the railway station and five minutes to the bus station. We do most of our socialising during the day, ie meet up for coffee, go for drives or cycle to Monte Gordo or further. Winter is quiet but there are still some festivals going on year round so always something to look forward to.

      Thank you! You can take small pets on the trains with no problem. We took a bus from Lagos to the airport because we couldn't trust the train. We have a video coming out next week on our travel day experience. Yesterday was a long one!!🙄
      Cheers!!!🍻

      I think that's the more appealing side to Spain over Portugal, public transport seems to be more reliable and available

      @@BrianandCarrie I am right now posting a couple of things on the local "Buy Nothing" Facebook group. I think I'm going to need the entire 14 months to get rid of everything and knock off all the items on the ever-growing to-do list. But we will get there! In the meantime, I'll be very happily living vicariously through you two! 😅🍻

    Hi guys! I'm planning on retiring to Portugal but I have to live off my ss, so on an extreme budget. That's why I'm looking to purchase a little place in central Portugal, are there any good deals to be had in the Algarve region perhaps further inland? Loved your video. Lilly

      Hi! We love the Algarve ❤️. As far as housing prices, we unfortunately would not know as this isn't a area we looked into yet. Happy searching, is such a beautiful place to settle down.

    Have you been to the North ? Viana Do Castelo ? Villa Nova De Cerveira ?

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před rokem

      We have been as far north as Guimaraes. We vacationed in Portugal 5 years ago and spent time in Porto, Lisbon, and Lagos with day trips out of each place. Thank you for watching!!
      Cheers!!🍻

    Hello guys. Thanks for the great information and the video. Where do you think is better for American to live (English speaking)?

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Před rokem +2

      Honestly, most of Europe speaks English. The only country that we have had any problems with was Spain and that was only really in Valencia. We just arrived in Romania and everyone has spoke English to us without difficulty. We do try to learn "please" and "thank you" in the country we are in.
      Cheers!!!🍻
