I run with a crew in NW Illinois, all we do is drive; supposedly this confuses most people as we don’t sit at all. We manage 15 properties with about 20 pushes. We average 28 deer between 10 guys through 4 weekends.
This type of hunting has been practiced since the beginning of time. Apologize for nothing.
With bows and spears, not rifles and shotguns. Don't call it hunting when they made it clear it's simply "pest control".
When you suck at woodsmanship..........drive em.
Ya they can't sit still long enough for the deer to come to them lame
Deer driving is one of my favorite ways to hunt!
I stumbled upon this video by mistake but I loved it. It was so entertaining and enjoyable to watch. I haven't done drives in 20 years. Just not enough people that want to do it anymore. You guys seem like a great family. Stay safe and good luck this year!
Living in East Tennessee. Your video was the first I have ever seen of deer hunting in that way. Awesome!
BE careful out their folks, old friend of mine got shot during Iowa shotgun deer season. It happen during a deer drive. He got killed near Red Rock area back years ago. His name was Nathan Sharpnack. Two time Iraq veteran. I served with him. God bless his family and him.
We do the same thing in Wisconsin as well. We actually get the majority of our deer doing drives.
I love your videos! We used to do drives here in Ohio but I'm getting too old for that now! You guys are a great group of hunters! I'm not a trophy hunter, I like my Venison, like you guys!
Thanks 👍
Awesome video definitely lots of shooting congrats on the deer great video
I look forward to these videos every year
Ron, I like the deer season song your brother was singing during the drive. You should include it as part of the beginning of your deer hunting video's
Great video.... I love pushing woods with family and friends. We always use tons of orange also to be safe. The one thing i would do different is check your guys for white and brown before the hunt. Every time i see those white gloves moving i cringe. Not a big deal in the open but ya never know what is seen in the thickets. Be safe and keep the videos coming.
Awesome video guys, driving is very productive, and exciting. It's great to see family and friends enjoying what they love to do. As I'm turning older now, I still have a lot of memories from years gone bye, and most of the family that hunted together have passed on. Enjoy every season while you can.
Thanks 👍
Its great to see a Family out doing what they love putting some good meat on the table !
This is so funny he is talking abt mushrooms while he is hunting i love it
Years ago I got invited to a huge cull hunt in south Texas. This ranch had way too many deer. We were told to shoot every deer we could from our assigned spots. Was like 150+ killed. There were dozens of people cleaning and packaging the meat for hours after dark. We were told that probably wasn’t enough deer removed. This ranch was like 15 thousand acres and hadn’t been hunted in 20 years.
Name of ranch?
No doubt...a paradise ! 😊
@@Urmoms300ZX the new owner name is Wilson. Had a rafter W sign on the gate that was a fairly new sign. Never saw or heard about another name. Someone said something about owner was part of athletic equipment business?
@timgruver5932 how were you able to get invited for something like that? Thats insane.
@@timbow50 Tom Hanks ranch?
Always look forward to these videos good job
Glad you like them!
Very fun, very effective. Great management tool!! I just love doing it. Action plus!! 👍👍
It really is!
im just south of you outside of miles. I bow and shotgun hunt. I enjoy watching your videos. i don't group hunt. usually just 2 of us. usually sit early then walk some small timbers. then sit late evening. keep booming!
Man the action was in that last section of the push!! Way to go Reese, congratulations on your first shotgun deer!!
One of the best pushes we've ever had of that timber since my dad started hunting that in the 70s
Nice video, looks like you had pretty good luck.
One of the best years we’ve ever had
Greetings from Wisconsin! Even though it's rifle here I've hunted shotgun my whole life. And drives are so fun. Sure you get a million asks but I'd love to join you. We have the same last name if that helps? Keep up the good work. Enjoy your channel much
Looked like fun, good job Reese!
This is awesome iowa shotgun season action good worm
Thanks!
Love that gun setup!
Can you tell me what shotguns, optics, and types of shells you were using? Thanks in advance.
Great hunting boys
Your brother had the prime spot on the last drive , must have been waiting for a big buck ?
Bob is kind of a funny guy !
Yeah, he already shot one yesterday, we don’t need the meat so he wasn’t going to shoot a
Excellent video... best one of the year.
Wow, thanks!
Just recently moved to Maquoketa from pa, where we used to do deer drives. If you're ever open to adding more guys to the group, I would love to do it again!
Great hunt, I used to live in upstate New York, and we hunted this way quite a bit, our part of the state was shotgun only, funny thing is now rifle is legal and there are less so-called hunting accidents.
I noticed a couple stupid comments from some people saying that’s not real hunting and a substitute for lack of woods knowledge, if they don’t like it, they don’t have to hunt that way, I hunt both ways and the thing is deer drives are very productive.
I enjoyed your video, thanks.
I'm from Pennsylvania. This is what we do in southeast PA because we're not allowed to use rifles. I haven't done this type of hunting in a while because I've had slugs Whistle by my head. That was pretty scary. But there's nothing wrong with the tactics or ethics of this style of hunting. It's efficient!
The one thing that I don’t personally like about it is the high chance of bad shots
@@joshclark9423 you just got to shoot the ones that are limping by that had it's leg blown off. Anyway like I said scary for me. All I do is bow hunt with my recurve and go up to the mountains with my Winchester 270
Enjoyed your video 👍
Awesome job love the video we tagged out before noon Sunday we shot 6
That's awesome!
I have that same pheasants forever hat… got it at a banquet when I was a kid probably 30 years ago!! They’ll probably bury me in it.
That's awesome!
Good job 👏 👍 👌
You have nice mix of land there, Lucky guy. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 🇺🇸
What's the most popular ammo?
We hunt same way on the last 2 days of gun season.
We have drivers and posters. Everyone wants to post our 20 acre honey hole. We actually draw straws to post and keep track each year so everyone gets chances. Several taxidermy bills have come out of that honey hole 👍😎
thanks as always
I jumped from that turkey too 😆
Scared the hell out of me!
Back in the day here in Western New York that was a common thing as well. Although it still happens not to the degree as back then.
Great camera work felt like I was there. Hutch
Thanks 👍
There's nothing wrong with driving deer like that that's a typical way to hunt in New York state if you have a group of people that works well the big problem is you have to be in an area where you don't have a whole bunch of other Hunters around because they will just harvest what you are pushing .You need to know where everybody is
That’s why I quit doing deer drive here in Pennsylvania during rifle season we do big drives all time hear all these guys shooting , not even a “thank you” or anything next year same guys were back they knew we were doing drives same shit all this shooting they never bothered to contribute back by doing a drive … we just quit doing it …. We do them now on smaller parcels of properties during the week days instead of weekend when all weekend warrior show up
grate love god bless
I’ve always wanted to do a deer drive I live in Mississippi and we own a sell barn and I deer hunt fish hunt spurieals turkey and hogs and cotoey love your videos
really unsettling watching the sitter not shooting the deer that were driven to him. that would be the last time he was allowed to sit if he was just letting them all run past. DRIVER for life after that embarrassment of letting them all go.
Deer need thinned. Around here between the drought and the deer crop damage the farmers didn’t get much this year.
In ohio i like pushers especially when theres not many blockers in s group deer get slit and tun different directions and sometimes even right too you i had a group of 30 stop right in front of me as i was clearing a faulty shell didn’t get a shot but it was awesome to see
Awesome video,,
Thanks for the visit
I was on your property a while back got a hell of a NICE Buck....thank you... 😂
What scope is on the camo shotgun
Nice hunt. Where are the phensants and quail
I was thinking the same thing
What's everyone using for guns? Looks like an 870 or 2 and maybe at least 1 Mossberg.
I am using a Mossberg but most people are using 870s or 350 legends
Ha ha ha Little Elsteins, these videos are great
And not only that it's a lot of fun to get together with family and friends
Blockers are called Standers here in WI
Watchers in PA
I haven't done a real deer drive in many years. Well, decades.
Myself, those spike ,fork horns , button bucks if I can ill check them in on doe days
We do drives like that in upstate ny with shotguns rifles and even bows.
Very nice 👌 👍
Thanks a lot
Th÷best part of drives starts when you start to see orange coming at you ts hot÷vy FAST!
The dead elm, I'm on my way lol
Did bump any pheasants?
Gotta get in there and get them, as you walk up a cart road. Works better if you’re quiet and ease the deer out instead of running them. Drive the corn
What's the average weight for one up there? I live in northwest Florida. Our average is probably around 110ish with guts. Lol we got full grown German shepards for deer is what I tell people. If you get one 150 that's a biggen for here. On public land anyways.
I hunt in Wisconsin an our average deer is around 120 gutted some bigger some smaller but a lot of fat to stay warm in winter.hope this helps
I hunt in S.Ohio and the average deer we get is around 100-120 gutted. I lived in Georgia for 3yrs and the deer were much smaller than Ohio! My family was hunting in 92 in Ohio and we killed an 11pt that weighed 285 Gutted! I'll never forget that hunt!
N.east Iowa. A big 12 pointer dressed out at 248 lbs so a good 310 live wt.
Hood hunting fellas
Thanks
Is it shotgun or is it black powder season ?
I love to do drives it a good way to get them
I’m from iowa too. Where abouts are you guys?
East central Iowa, along the Mississippi
Whoever was allowing all those deer to pass would never be in that position again in our drives. Actually he might not ever been allowed back out. All that hard work trying to get someone in that position and they just let them go. I agree with not shooting at every single deer, especially button bucks but come on dude. Unless you have a ton of button bucks and spikes, then it shouldn't hurt but help the herd. You don't want to shoot all your mature breeding Does and then allow an overpopulation of bucks either. I know I'll receive hate for this comment but I'm sure I'm not the only one that thought this same thing. It'd be really cool if you guys T.S.I'd the rest of the property as well and planted food trees. Preferably 🍎 & white oak where ya could. Guaranteed you'll increase your big buck ratio, especially with improved winter bedding. Good luck & God bless!
I Agree !!
No that’s a great thought! One thing I didn’t mention is that the person above bobby is a newer hunter, this was her first year carrying a gun alone. He was expecting her to shoot more and let them go for her. She shot once but then her gun jammed. But then another point on why he didn’t shoot was that they were all .5-1.5 year olds. I guess I don’t agree with purposely shooting them. It will happen anyway on occasion but if you have a good look at them, can determine that they are young, let them grow, wait for a bigger one to walk by. Personally I’m proud of my brother and his decisions. We knew we’d see more deer and we actually got 4 out of that last drive which is a good number for a push I think. But regardless, you do have some good points though
@@HartungFamilyFarms I loved the video! I Love deer drives. Great job 👍. Is what it is. They passed they pass!
@@HartungFamilyFarms You sit in stands and blinds to be selective. You drive deer to attempt to kill every deer you see. That many hunters should be able to kill four deer in one night's sit with careful selective shots. If the purpose is really to reduce the deep population, then size and sex don't factor into it.
How many deer are you aloud in Lowa
One any sex and you can purchase anterless tags up to the county quota
That one guy let like nine walk by without a shot
is Steve Hartung part of the organization.
Here sometimes some drive deer using bird dogs hunting quail . . Had turkeys to set in tall grass like quail, flush
You can take two hunters and put them in a room together and they will argue that their method is the only correct method. That being said I ignore all that and do what I want as long as it is legal.
Amen
How many tags are you allowed to have? I see 7 or 8 guys and 13 deer down in 2 days
We actually had 16 guys but some have multiple anterless tags, I think we had 23 this year
what do you mean by the bread basket?
Basically the point where if you hit a deer, they will more than likely die, a lot of vital organs there
@@HartungFamilyFarms Thanks I appreciate all your videos Ron, and Budman
it's fun
How far can you shoot a deer at??
When my family and friends would get together for a drive like these we would most often be doing it up in the hills and mountains of Oregon's Cascade Range to the east of the Willamette Valley. Because of the very steep terrain and huge tracts of timber and brush, we would often hang out extra "blockers/pushers" to fill in the gaps between pushers and the pushers would pick them up as they passed by. Our extra "blockers/pushers" we made, yes "made", by taking bars of Irish Spring bar soap, (the original scent/green striped bars works best), and cutting them into chunks then drilling a hole the chunks for a string or wire which we then used for tying to tree/brush branches. As we pushed the deer towards our human blockers, (which we often referred to as "standers", as in "you're on "stand", you're on "push"), they would try to escape past the "blockers" by going between them in the seemingly wide open gaps. Then they would get a whiff of our "Irish blockers", as we called them, and turn back into the funnel we had chosen for them and right out into the sights of our standers at the narrow end of the funnel. Worked fantastically! For some reason only the original green striped Irish Spring really worked well. With other soaps it was hit or miss. When the drilled blocks of soap begin to break apart save the pieces. Cut a square ⬜ out of the net bags that oranges come in and tie the broken pieces of Irish Spring into your homemade bag with a length of string or wire and they work just as well. Better even, as the Bright orange of the net bag make it easier to spot and quickly retrieve them in the bush. As the chunks and pieces of soap age just scrape a little off the surface of each piece to "renew" the smell. You can also wash yourself and your clothing with the soap as this is the one time you want the deer to smell you coming so that they break cover and head towards your men on stand. Effective, ethical, legal and lethal. Nearly every year those that participated in our friends and family drives got their deer and in those years when some didn't then those who were lucky enough to harvest a deer would each contribute to the unlucky few so that in the end every person on the drives got the same weight of venison per person at season's end. This tactic can even be used to turn a two man hunt into a multiple "person" drive. We would pick out a good sized draw or a little valley that looked promising for deer and hang the soap "blockers along both sides of and across the wide top of the draw and then one man would "stand at the narrow end with a good view of both sides and the center while the other man would push down through the draw towards the man on stand using a sweeping zig-zag walk back and forth and up and down both sides. The drawbacks to this type of two man drive is that the driver gets really worn out and the man on stand can legally only shoot his own deer and not one for the driver. This is fine when both are young, strong and healthy but really sucks if you are the young guy in a young/old duo because the old guy is always on stand and you are always humping it up and down those damn draws. Whoops, sorry, guess a little of the old resentment towards my logger father showed through there. I loved him and loved hunting with him but whenever HE decided that we were going to do a drive hunt I somehow always ended up doing the drive part while he was to old and decrepit to walk even though he spent all day walking when he was out logging. Oh, wait, now I get his point. 😉😁🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌shoot, shoot! Wow, did you see the size of that herd of deer? 🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌!!!🧼🧼blocked by the 🧼🧼's. Hmm hard to see it but those are bars of soap w/lather. "Long🌬💨ed this is". says Yoda.
Such an odd way to hunt compared to how we hunt out west. Good on ya boys tho get them loin's!!
Deer drives are a necessity with high populations and tough habitat and rugged topography. Gun season is when we thin the daggone herd
7:23 there’s orange after he sees the stand
@19:23 I was sleeping...Zzzzzzzzz!
That’s Bud Schroeder
THE ONE AND ONLY
I want watch anything else from u dudes letting deer walk
so,with so many farmers in Iowa complaining about crop damage, why is it so hard to getr permission to hunt there?
How does someone distinguish its a button buck so often. Impossible for even 1
I watch the tail. A doe will have the tail up and waving. I buck will have the tail down and a lot of the time the tail is between the back legs.
The budman!!
Did u claim the buck u shot in last video? Or group does first blood gets the deer long as its a decent shot not a grazs
We go by whoever put the kill shot on it. Or in this case, who would’ve killed it first. Ted’s shot was a better shot and would’ve killed it quicker therefore it’s his
Y’all don’t have the valleys and hills we have in West Virginia
Beautiful voice 😂
Yum yum deer meat.
Seriously the best, chewing on some sticks right now
I like this method more opposed to the use of dogs
30 minutes to decide what u gone do
No need to take so many deer unless you won't waste
I thought you said it was shotgun season? Are you hunting with a pump action rifle? That doesn’t seem legal. But I dont live in iowa so what do I know. Its illegal to drive deer in my state so we can’t do that. The deer population in our state is starting to get pretty high so maybe they will get rid of that law. I have a 8 point on camera that shows up at my house before hunting time hopefully he daylights before the end of the season.
I believe more deer are harvested in drives than any other form unless you get to bait or have a huge population
Not too smart to have white gloves on while doing a drive
Especially when I lose one 🤦♂️
You all would get more deer I. Treestands . Lol
Jokes 😂
