      It really is some ridiculous talent. And it takes some crazy amount of practice as well. For this specific group they do camps once per month from January to April to recondition their body and get some early practice in. But in May most performers move to California for all day, every day rehearsals before the summer tour. It's an insane amount of dedication to their craft.

    This could send you down such a huge rabbit hole of Drum Corps, and I have so many potential recommendations, however I just need to say to be careful about what you pick and react to because FloMarching(the company that owns the copyright over the majority of Drum Corps recordings, primarily of full shows) is extremely anal about striking people down. Many people end up titling their videos they personally took differently to avoid copyright, i.e instead of "Santa Clara Vanguard 2018" you'll see "Definitely Not Banta Blara Banguard 2018".
    All that said however, these are my recommendations of recent shows for you to listen/watch, whether it be on your personal time or a recorded reaction:
    Santa Clara Vanguard '18, '19
    Bluecoats '11, '14, '16, '17, '18, '19
    Carolina Crown '11, '12, '14, '15, '16, '17, '19
    Boston Crusaders '17, '18, '19
    This is already hours worth of shows, so I'll leave it there, but Drum Corps is something to easily get addicted to. I love your content and feedback on what you listen to, so I think you'll really enjoy this rabbit hole if you choose to go down it.

    As a bass drummer I can tell you exactly how they do it: counting, and a whole lot of trust! We focus really hard on tuning everyone else out, even our fellow basses, while also listening to make sure we're in time. We just have to trust that the others are playing where they need to be. Sometimes we even base it solely on feel, such as when playing hand to hands (splitting 16th notes to create 32nd notes).

    And yes, marching band and field band are A LOT of work. But where it gets you invited is great. I’ve traveled with a So. Cal then, state champion youth band, and it was the best way to grow up. I wouldn’t trade that for anything. The friendships were good. The music was great. And I marched with the CSULB (Long Beach) 49’s and we were the ONLY non-pac 10 conference band to ever be invited to march the Rose Parade. We played “Ja Da”, an old jazz standard, and “Rhapsody in Blue” by Gerswin, in a lush arrangement down the streets, for the entire 5 1/2 miles. We marched 350, and back then, that was huge.

He needs things exciting and one that you can follow the plot without having to be snobbish in its concepts. Gaslight tried to be too highbrow for the regular audience to enjoy. Every time I have shown it to someone, I had to explain it. If it needs explanation, it’s not fun and not worth it.

Basses split notes and I always felt tenors played ALL of the notes. What is easier, playing every note or splitting it and precisely placing each note? Other drum sections split notes too...but the basses win. Very underrated section. Snares get all of the glory...makes no sense.

    I loved this video, but the one part explaining ballad, it’s not “chill” is it’s “musical” they do this for the point to show off their musicality, it’s very interesting in my opinion to see all the tone quality

    It is GREAT that you commented on DCI. This show “Gaslight” is not their best show. You have to understand what and why a gaslight is left on all night in a theater. If you want to see a good one for better playing and a more understandable show, you should watch Carolina Crown do “Space Odyssey”. It’s not fair that this was your first (and probably last) DCI show you watched and reviewed. It gave you a bad impression and I understand that. You need one that is more understandable to appreciate them. I HOPE you give Carolina Crown a look-see. For good or ill, it will leave you with a better impression of Drum Corps. Thanks.

      I have a couple of DCI reactions here. Off the top of my head I also checked out the 2014 Bluecoats show "Tilt." I don't recall if explained it in this one but I'm a trumpet player of 18 years (though I play less often these days), I did marching band all throughout high school (trumpet for 3 shows, pit for 1) and seriously considered doing DCI while I was in college. I should do more DCI videos though because I miss that stuff, especially watching these performers do it at such a high level. Thanks for the suggestion, I see that was CC's 2014 show so that went up against Tilt so now I'm excited to see what some of the competition looked like that year.

      @@philjones5576 In the G days yes...all brass was in the same key and clef (G treble). Modern drum corps marching brass (so, none of the t-bones, french horns, or other concert brass) is all Bb treble EXCEPT for mellos, which are in F treble, as a mello in F is easier to tune than a mello in Bb.

    • @philjones5576
      @philjones5576 Před 4 lety

      @@samsignorelli I have no clue what point you are trying to make. Whether a horn is pitched in G, F or Bb the fingerings are the same. G C E are open, F# B Eb are second valve, etc regardless of the pitch. The comment posted was specifically related to switching between mellos and trumpets. The key of the horn has no bearing.

    I’m not a fan of this show. First of all, if you don’t know what “Gaslight” is or means, you will not get the concept, especially for a general audience who’s never seen marching band, Drum Corps, Winter Guard and in this case, acting. The section using the shoes as props and percussion was taken from a musical. If you don’t know the idiom, you won’t get it. The second place finisher, by .10’s of a point, was Bluecoats. Their show was strong in all captions and easily accessible from any level of knowledge of the sport. It was a kick a$$ show of the Beatle’s music. Even from a visual aspect, it was something anyone could enjoy.
