  • We learned a lot about teaching grammar in videos #1 and #2. There's still so much to learn.
What does an actual grammar lesson look like? What are the different steps?
Watch Video #2 • Teach Any English Gram...
In this video, we cover the structure of an ESL grammar lesson and all of the various different sections from start to finish. The grammar lesson created in this video uses the Present Perfect Simple for life experience, with the overall topic of travel experiences. This lesson is appropriate for a strong B1 class.
I'll put a link up before January 10 that has the complete ESL lesson plan, but here's the overall structure. Check back for the full lesson (with materials) in a week!
Here's the basic structure that we cover
Warmer: 5-7 min (the video has a mistake in the graphic. The time should be about 5 min) - For an optional warmer, choose whatever you would like. I usually just go right into my intro.
Intro: 1-2 min - Dress as I've been on a trip and elicit travel-related activities.
Lead In: 7 min - Board various questions related to travel and have students answer them after my demo. These can be questions like...
    1. How often do you travel?
    2. Do you prefer traveling alone or in groups? What are the advantages
    of each?
    3. What are three places in your country that every tourist should see?
    4. What are 4 of your favorite activities to do when you travel?
Target Language: 10 min - Present the grammar point (see grammar video #2).
Study 1: 5-10 min - Fill in the blank dialogue.
Study 2: 10 min - Creating questions and answers using travel pictures.
Activation: 10-15 min - Create a roleplay where students are applying for a travel magazine. The owners of the travel magazine will interview candidates to find out their travel experience and decide if they think the candidate is suitable for the job.
Error Correction: 3-5 min - Board students' mistakes, correct them as a class, and go over the positives + things to work on.

Chris you have really helped me a lot with my very basic beginners. Is it possible you could do some more videos like in the morning in the afternoon in the evening and at night? That one was really awesome. I was trying to think of a few more questions, in the same vein as "what do you do in..." so that I could create the same lesson plan using different questions. It went down a treat and the students loved it. Thank you so much 👍

It's unbelievable how clear you've explained everything! I'm an EFL teacher who has always struggled with lesson planning (it takes me HOURS to create a first draft for a lesson, which has been frustrating and discouraging, let alone tiring). I believe this is due to my college teacher throwing a lot of information at once every class. I needed someone to link all the loose concepts together in a simple, practical way.
Thank you for all the suggestions!

Hi Chris. Thank you very much for your videos. they are very helpful. I have collected sources but they are too much to digest. yours are straightforward and to the point and immediately applicable. I have just finished my online TEFL and I found it hard to really apply and to teach. what you said about the lesson plan, you don't read it, you practice to teach it! that's me. I am too much on theory. reading about it, is very much different with doing it. I am in Burkina Faso. Thanks again for sharing your expertise 🥰

I am interested in your TEFL course, but I don't, honestly, like the idea of undertaking it online because I would really love to have a real-life, physical conversation with tutors and educators like you and others in the language house. However, I live far away from prague. For my bad luck, I have to delay sitting for the course in the mean time. But you're definitely a great teacher .. I am really benefiting from your knowledge so keep the goo work up man. You're my idol.

Hi! Thanks to your videos, I was able to implement your structure into my lessons. I think what you said about only teaching what you will use in the Activation really helps the students to be able to speak using only pictures during the activation without any written notes at the end of class. But when I give them homework and they turn it in a week later, it seems like they forget most of the language from the previous lesson. Is this normal? Do you have any tips to help them retain what they learned?

    • @TheLanguageHouseTEFL
      @TheLanguageHouseTEFL  Před rokem +1

Yeah, one thing you can do is incorporate some of last sessions language in your next session or just have a quick review sessions, like a dialogue fill at the beginning of your next class.
