What happens to a falling elevator?

Elevator acceptance testing includes crashing the buffers. The buffers are large shock absorbers mounted below the elevator and counterweight. They are designed and tested to take the elevator impacting them at rated speed and capacity. This video was taken during some acceptance testing by a friend, Josh Kemble. Thanks for the footage Josh!
