      Agree. My son and I installed the TRD unit in my 2011 4WD Rock Warrior a few years ago. Still enjoying it every time I drive it, and it's great off-road in the back country.

    I paid $6100 installed - by Sparks. The price has gone way up. 65k reliable miles. Pushing 611hp to flywheel with 4.88 posi. I got 15.7 mpg prior to BD tuner - avg. 13.4 mpg post tuner. My 2WD truck weighs about 5500 lbs.

    Thanks for the review. $7,000 + $1,500 install!?!? WOW! That’s a lot of money! My 2012 Tundra Platinum already has a great sound and sensitive/fast acceleration. I can live with a little sluggish acceleration when passing cars. But for that much money I better get at least 50 mpg! LOL. Good review!

      Yep...these 5.7 v8 have already plenty of power. 380 hp & 400 lbs. Yeah plenty of power. $7000 for part & $1400 for a labor...? P/u trucks & SUV & 4Runners are already expensive and overpriced.
      Just wait patiently till housing bubble and a used car market bubble explodes.
      It's coming. This can't continue like this.
      There will be great deals on new and used cars coming.

    okay, if magnuson has taken the TRD name i guess it should include all the design details as well , maybe the parts sources from japan and such.. so magnuson should be able to reduce costs on the units due to the previous owners quantity of produced parts. 7k is taken from consumers when a new product is launched.. the TRD product was a solid product which is why toyota issued a warranty for the install..

    Most of the time I know horse power increase does equal better gas mileage but my average mileage went from 12.5 to 13 mpg overall. Checked after 75 fill ups. Also before the super charger when I was pulling 22 ft trAiler I was 8 to 9 mph. Over the same route to trailer park I was up at 9.3 to 10 mpg after 11 fill ups. Sometimes the increase air volume over the RPM range can provide more efficiency. I drive conservative most of the time to get as good a fuel mileage as I can.

    I had a Magnuson SC installed on my 2017 Limited Crewmax at 60k miles. Magnuson did the tune (installer emailed them
    my stock tune, Magnuson recoded it, emailed it back, and installer uploaded it to the truck). Gobs of power now and very smooth, but - A couple of issues I thought you may have some insight/advice on: (1) in tow/haul, shifts normally if I am not in the throttle hard, otherwise if I romp it from a dead stop, won’t come out of first gear - like the programming is trying to protect from a hard upshift, and (2) I get a lot of pause/slack between shifts at full throttle (again, like the programming is set up to protect the trans a little too much). I know yours is tuned via Bully Dog. Any comments on these two issues, and can I tune via Bully Dog myself, or would an installer/dyno shop need to do that? I am a typical shade tree mechanic and can do a fair amount of my own work. Thanks a lot and great channel.

    A big question for me is sure the mpg on the dash is off no biggie. But! The estimate in the dash as the truck is running low on fuel does it still give you a fairly decent idea say within the last 1/8 to 1/4 tank of gas as to when you will run out of gas in X amount of miles? At full tank I’m sure that number is off but what about near empty? Does that make sense?

    To the wheel the 4runner has 245 to 250 hp to the wheel dyno tested. With a super charger. Itll put out the 150hp but it's not what ur wheels will seem it's more like 80hp gain
    Which is substantially better, bring the 4runner to 330 hp. If u want more power and torque onto of the 4runner, bring up the gear ratios to 4.56 from the stock 3.73. And then add in the gas peddle tunner chip.

    Great video. I'm still curious with long term reliability. With all forced induction systems (including turbochargers), the engine internals will be exposed to higher pressures and temperatures, which will of course affect the longevity of the engine. It’s best to build the engine from the bottom up to handle these pressures, rather than relying on stock internals. Not to say the 5.7 can't handle it but if I had a supercharger, I would use high quality gas and oil. Definitely not the 0W20 oil recommendation for the stock engine.

    • @TundraDude34
      @TundraDude34  Před 6 lety

      What oil do you recommend

    • @edmiller3759
      @edmiller3759 Před 6 lety +2

      TundraDude34 given you live in the Northeast, I recommend you go with a good synthetic 0W30 oil. Im sure there will be a lot of opinions about this and I will just share you mine. 0W20 oil is a stout oil and is a good oil for the majority of engines but when it comes to the nature of high performance engines, a heavier weight provides better protection. A lot of the light oils (x-20 or even 0W16) manufacturers use it to increase gas mileage. When it comes to the brand of oil on my vehicles with HO engines (Harley and my 370Z and past vehicles), I am biased. I use Redline Oil. When my Toyota Care is over, my Tundra will get Redline 0W20 due to the heat in Texas and the amount of towing I do. Redline 0W20 is like a light xW-30 due to It's HTHS (High Temperature High Shear) of 2.9. I highly recommend this oil if you rather stick to a 0W20. I do not put it in my wife's Acura because I feel it's overkill. It's not a cheap oil. I think I just gave you my 50 cents instead of 2 cents. I just wouldn't use 0W20 in the 5.7 that is putting out about 550hp and 550lb-ft torque with a supercharger.

      I had a 2013 Honda accord that reccomended 0-20w. Every oil change, it was about 1 quart low. It didnt smoke, no gasket issues. Honda said "they dont know where the oil is going." Point being, not so much a fan of the thin stuff. I would think especially in a higher compression engine like a v8.

    I don’t understand why Toyota couldn’t put forged rods and pistons in there from the factory and just charge a little bit more for the truck so that it would remain bulletproof with the supercharger in the long run. Not saying that it isn’t reliable with the supercharger, but it’s a little disappointing that Toyota discontinued the SC because of lowered reliability issues instead of fixing the reliability issues instead.

    Can you use a supercharger to improve fuel economy?

    • @eaglesnest8000
      @eaglesnest8000 Před 5 lety

      It's complicated. You can get more power out of a engine with a turbo or supercharger. If you merely bolt them on it will cost you fuel, but you get extra power. If you design a whole smaller engine to meet the power needs, you can get fuel savings, but usually at the expense of additional maintenance and or shorter engine life, because the engine works harder and hotter. You can even add both to an engine. It's a good recipe for small light cars that only need their max. power occasionally. But the harder you use your truck, the more you want displacement and not a super or turbo charger. But like all things the technology continually gets better and engineers get more clever. It's kinda like gas vs. diesel. Gas trucks are typically more fun to drive. Diesels are more expensive, get better fuel economy and have more torque. So they are better for work, IF you need the pulling power.

      That whole thing about a smaller turbocharged or supercharged engine working harder and not lasting longer doesn’t seem to apply to Toyota. I’ve got a 30yo turbocharged MR2 and a 25yo turbocharged Celica and both have a quarter of a million miles on them and the engines are very healthy. The 2.0L 3S-GTE engines were extremely overbuilt. They’re just insanely robust engines. And they’re only 2.0 Liters and making 300+whp

    Hi TundraDude34, have you been able to verify from your Toyota or Magnusson sources if you can put the supercharger on the new 2019 Tundra Platinum?

    Great videos. Quick question about the supercharger - how does it affect the towing capacity? I tow a large travel trailer, and am wondering how the supercharger would affect towing, good or bad ? Thanks

    • @TundraDude34
      @TundraDude34  Před 5 lety

      I dont think it would hurt it. Ill research it and see what i come up with

    • @firstname1733
      @firstname1733 Před 5 lety +1

      I recently looked into this. Tow capacity CANNOT be increased from a simple upgrade. The truck needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Starting at the frame... So you should NOT trust that your truck can tow more, simply because it has more power.

    • @TheYemcl
      @TheYemcl Před 5 lety +1

      Towing capacity is going to be limited by your frame and suspension, transmission/drivetrain components, brakes, and engine, and in that order. Do yourself a favor and don't try to exceed your factory rating, even though you now have more power. It COULD be ok... until it isn't.

    • @Chinese_Chicken
      @Chinese_Chicken Před 5 lety

      Towing capacity isn't increased and will have the same payload rating. It'll make pulling the trailer easier due to more available power.

    • @TundraDude34
      @TundraDude34  Před 5 lety

      Not really. The supercharger is a more reliable option, and Magnuson is a great company.

    • @sheepdog819
      @sheepdog819 Před 5 lety +1

      Wonder if you gotta change the compression to run a Turbo. More plumbing and custom exhaust needed as well. Would run a ton more expensive to Turbo vs SC.

    • @nbit69
      @nbit69 Před 4 lety

      Turbocharging a 5.7 Tundra can be done but they are not the turn key, check engine light free installation and reliability of the SC.

  • @meshallrazoog
    @meshallrazoog Před 3 lety

    I love your videos, but I have several questions. Is it true that installing a supercharger would kill the engine faster (it will not be reliable over time) and can I theoretically install a switch on the dashboard to turn off the supercharger in the summertime? if no why? Thank you so much

    • @ronbranum4134
      @ronbranum4134 Před 3 lety

      Super charger is belt driven off of.the crank, and is also bolted in place of.the upper air plenum. So in short absolutely not , you can not turn it on and off... You can however drive it easy and not keep your foot in it it will not effect your engine. But being.that the 4.0 is damn near bullet proof I wouldn't worry about it. Hope this helps

      @jonstundralife5897 Před 6 lety +1

      What were your numbers before BFG and after? I switched to the BFGs immediately so I'm curious. Stock setup on my long distance travels im getting 17mpg avg and i regularly go through multiple mountain ranges on my travels. If i hypermile i can beat that but that 17 is with normal driving. City is a whole different beast but im getting 15 in city (taking it easy).

    Isnt The TRD super charger around the same price?

    • @nbit69
      @nbit69 Před 4 lety

      TRD Supercharger is built by Magnuson...but TRD discontinued the SC in 2015 so they're no longer built under the TRD brand. The Magnuson SC wasn't available in any other way than the TRD label up to 2015 and they reworked the milling making it look different going forward. The down side to the Magnuson is that Toyota no longer will unlock the ECU so you have to use a piggyback tuner now. I've had a 2008 and a 2011 both supercharged using TRD and my 2016 was Magnuson using the piggyback Uni-Chip POS tuner and the TRD with factory flash was much better. I don't know if it's been improved as I was one of the first to do this back then but that was my experience. I now have a 2019 Platinum which I want done but it doesn't seem to be covered at all.
