  • I talk to Patricia from Tarantula Heaven (a trained and practicing therapist) about growing your tarantula or exotic pet collection too quickly, where the line is between an exotic pet collection and pet hoarding, mental health in the hobby, and what to do if you feel overwhelmed. It is easy to get caught up in buying new species, especially if you are getting spiderlings and it can almost feel like an addiction. I have definitely described myself as a tarantula addict or said I was addicted to buying new species...lol. This is a clip from the Exotic Pet Collective Podcast I upload every Thursday on my second channel.

Chasing novelty is the root of addiction, with so many Ts out there to collect, thats where the addiction manifests. Plus they are simple so its easy to justify, but the more they pile on, the more destructive they can get. Like you said, be responsible!

That endorphin rush is SO real. Thank you for talking so seriously about this. In the hobby we joke around all the time about it being an addiction, but we don't think enough about the real implications. I definitely notice a pattern in my buying when I'm feeling stressed out and drained. At the same time though, I turn to husbandry to help calm me down as a sort of therapy. I liken it to gardening. Filling water dishes, feeding, taking out uneaten food, and taking pictures of the Ts helps me out a lot. But I definitely need to be careful and not go overboard.

    • @tarantulacollective

This is very true. I find a lot of relaxation in caring for my tarantulas as well...even just observing them. But i need to be careful when i am bored or feeling down and cruising website adding stuff to carts. Even more now bc people sometimes want to send me tarantulas for free...and I have to politely decline and know my limits.

I could easily let myself get carried away, but I decided that my available shelf space would dictate the amount of tarantulas I can keep. I just happened to have a conveniently designed shelf area which allowed me to have at least 4 different species. All are females, so I know I'll be enjoying them for many years. As much as I do obsess over Ts, I do keep it controlled. I always look forward to seeing what they're up to when I wake up in the morning and also when I get home from work.
One of my favourite activities is having my morning coffee and just enjoy looking at them. I may not have a lot compared to many keepers out there, but I genuinely appreciate what I have. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

Once I read to them 🤣 Yeah, I'm a crazy T lady🤣 Two of them always come out when I'm there - as if they could "hear" me. And they stay as long as I'm there and go back into their hides once I get up an leave. I just love spending time with them! They have a therapeutic effect on me 🙏

I have an addictive personality, for sure. Just over a year ago I was drinking a lot in a vain attempt to help with my depression and anxiety (at the time, undiagnosed). A lot of the time I didn't plan to over-drink, it just ended up happening pretty much every time I went out. I have no off switch in my head sadly. However, I've just got out of a pretty emotionally abusive and neglectful relationship, I'm loving being alone, something which I previously detested, and lockdown has meant that I haven't been able to go out drinking. And honestly? I never want to again.
Here we are, I'm 2 Months in to the hobby, and I have 31 slings. However, I see them just as that - my hobby. I'm fortunate enough to have disposable income and wouldn't purchase any if I couldn't afford it, and luckily, slings are pretty cheap. It really does just give me something to do in the evenings rather than just watch CZcams, and watching them moult and feed honestly makes me feel like I've accomplished something. I feel like a proud parent. My whole life I've been afraid of spiders, but these guys... They're my new friends who don't encourage me to drink excessively, and that's the kind of friend I need.

I definitely related to this discussion and I that endorphin rush when you get your newest T is so real. I only have three T's, but I did experience that spending guilt you spoke of when I got my two newest T's, the first slings I've bought in about 10 years.
Patrica's advice of having someone to keep us accountable is great too. As I was discussing my future animal plans with my husband, he asked, "Where are you going to keep these animals?"
Just that simple question was enough to make me stop, and step back and get a plan together. Now I have a beautiful shelving unit in my kitchen that can safely house all the animals that I have and plan on getting, even as adults.

This couldn't have come at a better time! I'm days away from the two year mark of my brother's passing. Within 6 months of his passing I jumped from 1 to 25 in my collection, on top of my 3 snakes and 1 scorpion. I just added a chameleon last week and have spent the last 2 days obsessing and reorganizing everyone. All of my critters are well taken care of, don't get me wrong. But this definitely made me stop and think. It's 2 am here and I was still going, trying to hide from my thoughts and memories. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this entire community. @the Tarantula Collective you absolutely hit the nail on the head with this one. I'm an ex drug addict (I was an addict for many years) and after getting clean and getting into the tarantula hobby, I found that my addictive personality traits came out when it came to browsing t's online, purchasing them, buying enclosures and decorations, substrate etc, and then receiving and housing them. After I'd done all that, I definitely felt that drop of endorphins and I quickly found myself back online looking at more species to buy, and repeating the whole process again and again. I managed to identify the problem before it really became a problem, luckily, but it's something you really need to watch out for and be able to recognise if you have that sort of addictive personality. This was a really great video!

Thank you for exploring this topic and sharing your personal experience. Must have been really hard to open up in a podcast like this.
I almost got caught up in a situation like this multiple times, but my husband always helped me out by dragging me back to reality.
I have 20 different species of cockroach, so I am not saying I am not obsessed with my animals, but I track my spendings, calculate future costs so I can put money aside and also track my time so I know how much time I need to properly care for my animals. I highly recommend all these to anyone who tends to get carried away like me. But of course supporting family members & friends are the best help.

I hear yeah loud and clear. I bought my first few tarantulas years ago. But I lost my job back then so I sold them to a pet store. Now all these years later. I decided to buy a tarantula once again. At first i did it for fun. It wasn't like you have to have one. Any how I bought one then it turned into two then ten. Origionaly I wasn't going to buy a tarantula with how much they cost. One thing that made collecting fun was watching your lighting setups and how you put skulls in your tanks enclosures. Watching your videos was like watching something from the discovery channel. Your very entertaining. It was like watching the American chopper of tarantula videos. Keep up the good work. Last but not least I discovered that buying accessories to habitats or enclosures can be addictive also. In a positive way collecting tarantulas I found helped me from a mental health view. I'm by polar. I was in and out of a hospital for suicidal thoughts etc. The spiders give me something to do. But I like other hobbies as well. Snakes scare me though lol. Again thanks for making the videos and sharing your insights.

You must have been watching me all these years. Lol. Years ago when I got into fish one fish tank turned into 9 and progressively got bigger and bigger. I have 2 now. What was one bird turned into for birds. I still have all four. What was one snake turned into 13 snakes, I now have five. What started out as three tarantulas turned into 37 tarantulas, I know I have 27. I have 2 males that have matured out so I will be losing them before too long and then I will be down to 25. My goal is to have no more than 15. Everything that you guys were talking about on this 'addiction is true. I go to work and I come home. My social life is dealing with my Zoo. Which also includes a leopard gecko, a bearded dragon, 3 hermit crabs and a Russian tortoise on top of everything else. I recently almost started a communal of P metallica. but I came to my senses and had to cancel my order with fear not tarantulas. I have obviously surpassed my limits but I am able to take care of them and I love them very much. I always remember what somebody told me once a long time ago and that is "when a hobby becomes a chore, it is no longer a hobby."

Being somebody who has worked as a drug counselor and am into keeping tarantulas, I find this really interesting. I would look through the DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorders and use it to determine if an individual has a problem with tarantulas.
Taking the substance in larger amounts or for longer than you're meant to
Wanting to cut down or stop using the substance but not managing to
Spending a lot of time getting, using, or recovering from use of the substance.
Cravings and urges to use the substance
Not managing to do what you should at work, home, or school because of substance use
Continuing to use, even when it causes problems in relationships
Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of substance use
Using substances again and again, even when it puts you in danger
Continuing to use, even when you know you have a physical or psychological problem that could have been caused or made worse by the substance
Needing more of the substance to get the effect you want (tolerance)
Development of withdrawal symptoms, which can be relieved by taking more of the substance.
If somebody has 2-3 of these criteria meet than they have a mild use disorder, if its 4-5 it's a moderate disorder, if it's more than 6 it's a severe disorder.
So how can we use these criteria for diagnosing substance abuse disorders and apply then towards recognizing an addiction to tarantulas.

This is really important to talk about. This hit me a lot and made me think. I got my first 3 T slings's at the beginning of November, then late November I got 6 slings and 3 juveniles and another larger sling/smaller juvenile at the beginning of this week.
I'm currently in a difficult financial situation, but completely unrelated to tarantulas and normal every day life. I've got some things that have come up suddenly costing amounts of money that I don't have. So I know, as much as I would like to get more T's as almost like a "therapy", I need to focus on what I already have, take the best care I can of them, and when these issues are out of the way, maybe I can get some more. But right now, it is about focusing on myself, my own mental/physcial health, my family and my current T's.
Always important to talk and get support where you can. This community is amazing, so many lovely, caring and supportive people out there. Just remember to talk and ask for support when you need it.
Thank you so much for this, I think there is probably a lot of us out there that needed this ❤

I'm a sucker for new world T's and don't feel comfortable about the idea of owning old worlds yet and rather wait a few years than ending up being intimidated by my pet(s). I can so relate! I started keeping t's about a year and a half ago and once I started ordering them online I worried about the addiction aspect and getting too many. Initially I set my limit to no more than 50, but now that I'm up to 47 I've scaled that limit back to about 35-40 for when after some of my MMs pass away. It takes me two hours to feed the entire lot and I haven't been able to spend as much time on individual t's as I'd like, so I've learned that I can't comfortably handle 50. The key is setting limits for yourself and being able to revaluate those limits if necessary - as well as respecting your own limits and not justifying "oh just one more won't hurt" when you're struggling.

When I was single I used to have tropical aquariums and would get bored and go to the shop and count my small change to see what I could actually afford to buy. And yes, I did lose the home I was in because I just didn't have the money to keep up with my bills. I was also into buying guitars and amplifiers for me to use in the band I was in. I stumbled across this video late (long after it was published) but thank you for sharing your personal experiences on a topic that can quickly escalate. I've been at 12 pretty steadily for the past couple of years (MMs passing and a couple of slings that didn't make it kept the number constant) and do tend to get those spurts when I want tons. Now that I've been able to identify what Ts I really enjoy (OBTs - all the color forms! and chunky fluffy H. macs I've chalked it up to those few couple of species that are both arboreal and burrowers. So, in the future, I do have a couple on my wishlist (a heart butt C. elegans lol and maybe a T. seladonia though I accept the fact that you'd never see it), but now that I've found what I really like, I'll be able to continue keeping the numbers in check with just those couple of species. That being said, 4 of my 12 are various color forms of OBTs, 2 are H. macs, and 1 is an S. calceatum (basically the same as an H. mac) so pretty true to plan ;)

I have never had a substance abuse issue but I have loved animals since I was a child. The only thing that gives me total peace is being in my reptile room. Tarantula keeping is definitely addicting. I whole process of acquiring them is a rush. I'm in awe of them every time i do my care daily routine. People find me weird for keeping them as well as snakes. Well I guess I'm not normal and don't want to be

A year into the pandemic, I was very lonely, so I finally got a mantis and it was a great decision! Shortly after, I then purchased two more, but quickly realised that quantity diminishes my ability to care for each one. I now understand that, before getting any new animal, I need to develop a comfortable relationship with my current ones.
I also don't like the idea of having a "collection" because that feels like treating these sentient beings as objects. Thinking of them as my kids/companions instead of a pet also reinforces their individuality. I should note that this applies to myself, I don't judge what anybody else does. {O:

very good video and tbh i am guilty of getting too many ts in a short time. i started about 1 1/2 year ago and i have 85 ts now. i am at the point of kind of regretting getting that many... and like you said, i had a very rough time back then, i hated my job, my best friend got in a serious relationship and our friendship suffered a lot. at least for me! on top of other stuff happening.
i dont mind having a lot of spoods! i love all of them to bits!
but its like you said, one day they all need bigger enclosures and 85 tarantulas in a proper enclosure really IS a lot and i did not think this through as much as i should have!
i try to give all males away for free to friends who breed tarantulas. because i know them personally and i know that they are taken care of. but the small ones... its hard to find ppl for those!
having many tarantulas does not make you a good keeper! i wish i had not been this dumb but i cant undo that. i try my best to make it as comfortable for my spiders as i can. but there is only so much one can actually do.

@@tarantulacollective You are more than welcome, you've raised a very important subject Richard. I've been addicted to cigarettes in this life, and I am more than aware of how a drug addict can devastate a family. But there are many other types of addiction. Personally I have two wardrobes full of woolen skeins that are not cheap. If I am honest I will never knit all that yarn up. I have almost stopped buying any now, thankfully. Instead I am being extremely careful to limit myself with my jumping spider and mantid collection. I have limited myself to one window sill full, which can then transfer to a shelf when the weather dictates. 10 jumping spiders, 4 mantids, and space for just one more 8" square exo terra enclosure.

One thing I'd tell my past self is to just get dwarf species. It's one of those things that I'd only realize in retrospect, but I'd be just as fulfilled having a bunch of Cyriocosmus and I'd probably have a few more coins in my bank account cuz enclosures would have stopped at large Amac boxes.

That's CRA?y you brought this up. I'm a recovering heroin addict and full time single father if 6 year old twins. I've been sober from all drugs and alcohol for almost 6 years. If you see the relation lol. Now I have a millu8n tarantulas. It's become my recovery tool. Fortunately I've at least been smart enough 2 get tarantulas to where I have pears that are maturing Etc and I am finally to the point where I can breed and start making a little bit of money to support my hobby more. I'm really hoping did this year I'll be able to do it full-time and be financially stable. If not hey I'm still going to be in the hobby forever. Tarantulas can be and Incredibly successful recovery tool if done properly but it is hard especially as an addict to not get into that spot where you are spending all your money on tarantulas and then you owe people money just like you would when you were on dope LOL. But you have to recognize that fracture in your personality and stabilize it. Because in the end you have to take care of yourself and you have to be able to take care of the pets that you acquire.
