Arsenal and Manchester City enter the second leg of the quarterfinals of the 2023-24 Champions League with all to play for.
Mikel Arteta's side drew 2-2 against Bayern Munich at home, while Pep Guardiola's men drew 3-3 in spectacular fashion against a surging Real Madrid.
What tactical lessons can we learn from the first leg games and how will the managers change their plans going into the second leg?
Joe Devine, JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie dig deep into the tactics and try to predict who will be crowned the Kings of Europe.

I missed this trio so much. Their tactical analysis is second to none in today’s pundit landscape, and they do so while being funny.
It's clear that The Athletic thought they were too silly and wanted only boring analysis. It's clear having someone like Adam Levanthal chairing the videos what they're after.
Just need it as a podcast...
The Jon Joe JJ trio is too powerful. Nothing else on youtube can match their abilities of football analysis. I’ve really been enjoying the new graphics, they’re all perfectly used and aren’t intrusive whatsoever. Kudos 👏
The jjj
UCL gives us these guys for two consecutive weeks. Let's not take that privilege for granted. I miss these guys together but I'll take what I can get...
17:20 a rare laugh from Director Joe. I know we all love the tactical analysis but its the ridiculous questions that makes me love you guys.
17:17 god I love Devine
MORE OF THIS
“I wasn’t in France” “no but the players were” 😂😂
As the everyman I would like to highlight that the videos from the athletic are 10x better with Joe devine
You guys are incredible. I can listen to you all day
Quality Arsenal assessment. I would mid block Bayern next time and jump on occasion
Give them no transition - their keeper is too good in buildup
EXACTLY i think we olay how we did vs City but more attacking and in a more expressive nature plus we'll have martinelli as an outlet. Bayern were great but feel we played into their hands so this time being away the onus will be on them. Plus this season i feel were a better team when we need to play for a draw and lock in defensively with saliba, gabriel and rice @6 (which is where he should be 2nd leg) and then keep a clean sheet first and then go try score. Arteta taking a leaf from his FA Cup Winning defensive run days and also a tad bit Simeone inspired. Tuchel got arteta first leg imo but 2nd i feeel like Mikel finally gets his statement win on the european stage. AC Milan '08 Stuff 🤞🏾🤞🏾
“How will managers change their plans going into the second leg”
A plan that wasn’t was the fact that there wasn’t much defending happening for any tie, you cannot sit deep and invite oppositional pressure in the away leg, whilst not comfortably being in a position.
It tells us that one manager is bald
But which one tho? 🤔
Pep is just taller than his hair.
Perhaps we can infer that bald men are cute? 🤔
Pep's bald cap just hasn't broken yet. One day there'll be a strong gust of wind and it'll be revealed that he actually has long ginger hair (probably)
just glad that Joe is back
Joe's voice is music in the ears
This tifo irl crew needs to do more barca content… only sensible analyst in the athletic
Great analysis bros for giving us deep understanding of the games.
These guys are just the best at talking about Football ⚽
jj's promo at the end instead of joe sounds like a drunk homeless person snuck himself into the studio:/
This lot would make an engaging podcast
❤❤❤ great vid ;D
Awesome editing. It made it super engaging
You guys are the best 👌🏼
This content is absolutely brilliant guys! Please keep this up and make it as often as physically possible… Seriously I cannot get enough of your guys analysis. So thorough, so well done, please like this video and share it so that it is financially feasible for these guys to pump this content out!
These analyses are so great. I've learned so much about each team's tactics that can go unnoticed when watching their games in real-time.
To be honest, I don't think Real Madrid's tactics are strong enough to defeat Man City. Madrid can score goals but when it comes to structure, I think City would have the advantage.
Pedri, Gavi, Cubarsi, Yamal, Balde, Fort, Faye, Guille, Roque
Foden, Rico Lewis, Claudio Echeverri, Oscar Bobb, Gvardiol, Doku, McAtee, Savinho, Yan Couto, Julian Alvarez, Haaland. With one of Wirtz/Musiala possibly inbound, the future is indeed very interesting.
@@anshumansahu1087Finley Gorman as well.
Olise can join City.
You also have Perrone. Neves can join City.
@@athreyathandeswaran7510 Yes. Man City are seriously scouting Ruben Neves. Finley Gorman is a gem City brought from leeds recently.
@@anshumansahu1087 Very unlikely Wirtz or Musiala will join
Who are these guys
For the culture, I need an Arsenal - Barcelona UCL final
That would be epic
To avenge the injustice of 2006
How poetic would it be to beat Porto (a good historical matchup for Arsenal), Bayern (a terrible historical matchup for Arsenal), Real (the literal greatest UCL club OAT), or City (their modern archnemesis and title holders), and finally Barcelona (for obvious reasons).
I'd bet my house on Arsenal in that game, but I won't bet it on them getting to the final
Welp
can someone tell me what pad they are using and what app they are using to run the tactics board and analytics on games?
Bayern sitting back against arsenal is more reflective of bayerns form this season. If Bayern were running away with the league and were consistent I think they would’ve imposed their game on arsenal. Bayerns team is better than arsenal man for man in my opinion so they should look to impose themselves on arsenal. Arsenal are a very beatable side.
On Barca I’d love to see a video on gavi on why he so good. I personally don’t rate him that highly. He doesn’t score, assists, play key passes, dictate the game or dribble so he’s not effective going forward even though he plays high up the pitch. Yes he presses well but once he gets the ball he needs to be effective.
loving this new format
Love hearing yall talk…hi from Santa Barbara
i'm so glad the athletic are here to tell me what to think.
But Enrique didn’t even help Mbappe
He put him out wide when he’s meant to be in the Mbappe zone with Nuno Mendes out wide
This is the same problem Arsenal are having with Martinelli
These run in behind goal getters like Rashford, Mbappe, Son and Martinelli have no reason to be held out wide
They’ll be limited in the game
such a great video
The quadruple J combo strikes again. I love you guys. Thanks
Jon's Central Cordoba sweat is rad
More Tifo hosts in the podcast please, love these guys beyond belief. I always thought the Athletic has sub-utilized their charisma into their business strategy
More of these please
This is the football podcast dream team
I believe they call it 'probing'.
These three men are the best football analysts itw
Great analysis
Man i wonder if these 3 would work well in some sort of podcast format???
I think Man city did well against Madrid cause u can see at the end of the game that Madrid where scard
love John's final point of that arsenal would lose to city in the next round even though they have played each other 3 times this year with arsenal winning 2 of them and the other being a 0-0 draw
John didn’t want that Arsenal fan angst 😂, finally you guys trusting the process 👌🏾
Bloody fantastic you trio of jackanapes
I really get the feeling JJ is in mourning for what he's lost from the old days. I absolutely love him but I want them back and let off the leash to sing songs about a frog who could kill a man and redesign the super league. .... ok I might be projecting but that is what I see in JJ. Love you man 👍
Oh baby, TIFO is back
So JJ is kinda saying that Real, particularly on the left side were using relationism?
Best trio
Whilst both games were on I and probably John were watching Leeds draw nil nil
Jon, JJ, Joe partnership is like prime Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo
Omg is this the podcast back?
But u stopped making game tactical analysis on tifo
What's with these Sat morning releases?
Friday evening pst
@@imacat123 I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume the crew is based in the UK. Hence OP's question.
These guys are much better than the so called pundits on Sky, ESPN and CNBC.
Try telling pep that. He’s the most stubborn manager in the world. After watching man city this whole season I can say that if a 500 minute match existed with unlimited substitutions and man city conceded in the 1st min without being able to score until the 499th minute pep wouldn’t change a thing over that much time(talking about style of play not substitutions )
PEDRI! PEDRI! PEDRI! PEDRI!
I think I recall John Stones basically being hailed as the MVP for City last season. How devastating have his absences been this season? Or has he no longer been as critical to the team?
The removal of the away goals rule makes both of the first leg games almost pointless. means the 2nd leg starts at 0-0
In regards to MBAPPE, the M is silent so pronounce it BAPPE. 😇
Latest homegrown players. And someone had to mention Harry Kane.
I'm all for infographics, but this is too busy on-screen to watch and enjoy. For me at least.
Felt like watching guardiola's recent press conferences with the moving billboards behind him.
P.s. loved the analysis though
Agreed. Over edited - still good- but too much
Yeah, that's fair. This will be improved on for next week. Thanks for your input and thanks for watching!
But without these graphics, how will people who don't know what the word "deferential" means follow along with the discussion?
As a casual fan, I appreciated the insight into tactics I hear often but don’t really know like pressing styles
Bayern can barely cope with arsenal in second half. Not sure what u mean
Sup ma guy
Let's see
JONNN MCKENZIE!!!!
Drawing in Madrid is being figured out? Guess City were figured out last year too
Is that Doe Jevine?
8:45 Too many Arsenal fans exaggerate the defensive “problem” of Zinchenko while completely dismissing how he makes our whole team better. He literally does not give away that many goals. He makes the first second phase of our buildup much better. Arteta knows better and keeps trusting him.
Agreed, after seeing how Arteta's revitalised our club over the last few years, I'm inclined to believe he probably knows what he's doing.
he forgot that he was defending against aston villa, bailey's goal
Funny how both John and JJ took arsenal qualifying for granted.
@13:55 Joe really trying to derail JJ with all the comments about probing and penetration 😆
Do they do this analysis on other teams? Proper giving other teams' analysts on how to beat Arsenal 😅
It will be a miracle if Madrid beat city in a few hours I feel… hurts me to say though
Joe fighting the good fight to keep the goofiness alive
19:00 so i'm an analyst then ? thanks
Brill
The Man City prediction has aged poorly already 😂
No. Champions league teams have Champions league-level attacks
6:40 if you're going to name drop the culprits for the goal why not mention your countryman Rice as well?
He has been awful since coming back from the international break with England
The chess game continues...
The only problem about Arsenal vs Bayern previous game ,is that Arteta forgot that Bayern winger can run faster than kiwior..Arsenal can win in Munich 2-1
Can they? 😂
❤
I can only imagine that if Grealish were a UAP, he would both probe and penetrate.
Martin Erdagore
How delicious would it be...if PSG and Real Madrid meet in the Finals?
Unbelievable, Joe and Jon using long words like deferential
Bayern, City, Atleti and PSG thru imo
PSG winning the whole thing. Kane bottling in the final.
Zero ball knowledge
Lmao, PSG in the ucl is more likely to bottle than Kane. 😂
The Athletic guys ... can you do a show about the Mickey Mouse David Moyes defeatist so called tactics???
For a random American: do you think JJ Bull would be hard to understand? His accent doesn’t seem TOO strong to me.
No, he is not hard to understand. But I can understand Carragher with no problem also so maybe it's just me haha
Im not a native speaker and can follow him easy. So for an American should be easy
Kluba Inglada a desappontionada alla matckas futballa Europea! Arsenala 2:2 a nixa sufficantionada. Chancka minimalia a stadione Allianza inda Municha. Leverpola a una katastropa extravaganza alla historia kluba. Nixa chancka alla secondo lego! Sola Manchesteria City a una gutska chancka forn secondo lego recka semifinalia! Takse mycke. Thank you much. Vielen Dank.
Gosh I really get frustrated by Jon mckinzies analysis, it’s classic example of arrogance of someone that understands a small aspect of something (tactics) but regularly misses the larger point.
He’s so obsessed by in possession control that he thinks for some reason it’s superior, when it’s not.
The best champions league teams never play like that, with two notable exceptions, Barcelona with messi and city last year which wasn’t even traditional in possession control.
The reason it’s so successful in a league format is because it maintains possession against teams of considerably lower quality, reducing them to a few high quality chances rather than sustained attacks.
At the business end of the champions league against the best teams it’s quite clearly suboptimal and actually makes the teams a bit toothless
a PROBE and a PENETRATION.
First today
What's a Dune Too, guys ?
i was today years old when i learned that you cannot be offside in your own half
Just wait until you find out that you can't score an own goal from a free kick. 😆
Both Are Out LOL
Spoiler alert for the second leg
Sign of respect but also I think it highlights a problem arsenal have in the LHS of team. Xhaka was not properly replaced and it's affecting martinelli. Rotating LB's hasn't helped either. We're loosided team which means we're easier to stop. Hence the struggles in build up, it's down to the lack of a proper left 8
LOL the disrespect to dortmund, barely spoken about for 2 minutes
Never deserve any respect ever again after how they threw the title away last season. Pathetic club.
