      In all cases, a good way to annoy French players looking for complications. Psychological damage is an intangible advantage which, like any other advantage, may or may not be sufficient

    In the 2.c4 line I prefer the answer 2...Bb4+ followed by a quick Nge7 and O-O, if white waits too much can be stucked in the centre. Obviuosly if white plays well I think it's fine for black anyway.

  • @sleepy4x
    @sleepy4x Před 6 lety +1

    1. Nearly all French players I know hate the Exchange Variation. That is a good argument in favour of it. 2. It creates open positions, French players love it closed. 3. White is a tempo up in an open symmetrical position. So he simply can't be worse.

      Eh, as someone who plays the French quite often, the Exchange is weird. It's what beginners play.
      And while the advance variation and others create closed positions, they are interesting. There are bishop-knight exchanges, the black queen gets out to the side etc.
      The Exchange French is much more boring and positional.

    This video can't come at a better timing for me! I've just began picking up on the French defence, but I didn't know anything other than the "boring symmetrical line" you showed.
    Out of curiosity, I've came across this line in my personal random exploration:
    1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.Bd3 Bd6 5.Nf3 Nf6 (yes, the boring line!)
    But I thought 6.Qe2+ looks interesting. If Black blocks with 6...Qe7, then after 7.Qxe7+ Bxe7, arguably Black has made some concession by retreating the Bishop from the more optimum d6 square to e7. If Black plays 7...Kxe7, position would just be a mess (White is still slightly better, due to Black's King stuck in the middle, I suppose.)
    If 6.Qe2+ Be6, 7.Ng5 can force a Knight-for-Bishop trade at the expense of a few moves. Not sure if you have views on this line?
    Thanks in advance, and please continue with the many good openings videos!

    Thanks for the insight!
    Just a thought, how effective is 3.....Qxe5 and then transposing into a Fort Knox ish kind of set-up? Not very ambitious, but does it have any serious repercussions in the long run?

    • @teamplayer2helper
      @teamplayer2helper Před 7 lety

      Dereque Kelley Fort knox usually comes out of rubinstein. After Nxe4 black plays Bd7 almost always followed by Bc6. Black usually follows up with the normal Nbd7 and Nf6, black hopes to prove that the 2 tempis wasted on getting the bishop to c6 is worth it. After Bc6, whitr can defend his knight with Be3 and when Nf6 comes he can choose to retreat or defend it even more (Qe2 or Re1) At times like this, black may consider a mass exchange, followed up with c6 where black has a solid position, but may lack to find a concrete plan. If white plays c4 at any moment, the d4 pawn becomes very weak in the fort knox variationen, which is usually blacks plan. He can try to bait c4 in different ways.

    • @Phoenix-ox2jr
      @Phoenix-ox2jr Před 8 lety

      +omedakreyi I think you can play it against every opening, like every single one. It is good if you want to avoid theory, but other than that I don't think it is the best way for black to play. Some people like it, and it does pretty well in blitz, but I personally don't like it. I prefer to go for some sort of Indian defense, or usually French for e4. Sometimes I like to play e5, or the Sicilian against e4 also. I personally find that playing theoretical positions has greatly improved my chess, and the opening as well as the endgame are my best strengths. During the first week when I started playing chess seriously, I learned the fried liver attack, and the Evans gambit. Those two openings have brought me a long way, as I was learning other openings. My opponents are never prepared for the Evans gambit, and I have never lost a game playing it.
