- Known popularly as the "T", Boston's MBTA subway trains provide a vital role to the Commonwealth, moving thousands of people around each day. Here, we take a brief look at the Blue, Green, and Red subway lines as they zoom around underground. You will also visit one of the first subway stations in America - Boylston (opened in 1897).

4:03 perfectly captures the green line Wheel squeal at Boylston station!
boylston is enough to make you deaf
Thank you! We live just outside of Boston and my 3 year old train enthusiast will love this video. He loves riding the T! He loves your videos. His favorite is Steam Trains Galore 2. He watches it every day.
Thank you for the comment! I'm so glad to hear it. I'm planning on releasing more videos from the Boston area soon, so hopefully he will like those too.
3:01 reminds me of one of the trains in New York.
i really love boston
i went in to boston while summer(4-5 times in total) beautiful city. but never saw the subway
Alex Studio0610 same lived there for 8 years way better then where i live now
where u live now???
atlanta i hate it
oh. i would like to see ny one day.
When I was in jr. high here in NYC, I rode every line of the system after school, sometimes getting home real late! I saw parts of the City I had never seen before even though I was born here! One of my goals is to ride the subways of North America. I've been on the T many, many years ago but didn't get the chance to explore the entire system. Likewise, I rode the SE:PTA in Philly and Marta in Atlanta but those excursions were brief. I coined the term 'urbanrailer ' to describe my love and fascination with subways, light rail, trolleys, buses and commuter railroads. I want to see Chicago and DC, the BART, etc. I had Lionel trains as a kid but the real trains were outside my building! Initially, there were three divisions: IRT, BMT and IND; each had it's own rolling stock, station design, sound and smell and by 'smell' I'm not talking about anything offensive; they had a unique sound and smell. Taking the train to Coney Island was fascinating; the idea of a subway to the beach! I understand Lionel makes limited New York City subway train sets that are quite expensive but I would love to have one of them some day! They've just about replaced all the old stock here; the new trains, can't remember their designations, make a weird high pitched sound as they motor up! Are there any other urbanrailers out there? Let me know if you share my enthusiasm for urban transit systems!
Come to Chicago, the CTA welcomes you ;)
philly metro isnt toosmall and miami has a little one. so does baltimore
Ahmasi Lloyd Hey man! Fellow New Yorker here and as a teenager I also took every single subway line on every single stop in NYC. I would plan my weekends to take the train to different neighborhoods.
Outside of NYC I have taken the subways in Toronto, Montreal, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami (more of a rail system), BART, Chicago, DC and Baltimore. Outside of North America I took the Tokyo subway and train system which is the absolute best from my personal experience.
Long ass sentince
I may be one. Since I lived in New York City until recently, I've been fascinated with the rolling stock and system of the subway there, arising from how it's the main form of travel to go somewhere interesting or fun. I've had an interest for the city buses for a short time too.
The T needs so much work, some of the trains are in horrendous shape, and living in New England I'm qualified to say that.
+Gary Plastek Give em a break, it's the rust belt.
+s0nnyburnett The trains are getting upgraded
s0nnyburnett Wtf, Boston isn't the rust belt. It's a thing called corruption and idiots in charge of the T.
Gary Plastek I agree
Gary Plastek I totally agree it does need work and badly and what's worse is no one takes pride in it not like in Moscow as an American it's nice to see Russians take pride in there subway subway systems there are lots of videos about the Moscow metro it's a beutiful system
The sounds are about right. The blue line seems like the least-used, and is the shortest. The red line during rush hour is murder. Can't go ten minutes without a ''disabled train'' full of people pulling through.
Lynne Dumas green line is also hell
Lynne Dumas I know right
No The buses are always delayed
And It sucks nobody talks about the buses
Lynne Dumas o
I like the sound of MBTA [blue line]
those are called siemens sitrac igbt vvvf inverters
I just went to Boston and I rode the T! I love it!
First time visiting, I live there
Was it you first time
I love Boston haha (from CT) the T is legit my shit haha

Ah! I love the subway in Boston! So many memories! :D
coming home is going to be a joy and a thrill, been gone 19 years, miss the home state
Love the sparking of the third rail...
Great catches Mike!!!
The Subway Trains is the great way to get to and from Work in The Boston Area.
U forgot orange
Awesome Video Mike
I think these are one of the best trains ever 999,999
I was on board that train on the way to Fenway, it was like being in a sardine can.
Hello! and welcome to Boston MA!
Good catches!
Well I was three but now I am nine I love your videos I live right outside of Boston just like my mother said
Aug 26 2015 Red Line trains have stop running due to time and closure, same with Green,Orange,Blue,Silver and commuted rail. While with bus systems too.
3:02 sounds like the R143 and the R188.
And R142A
Nyc copied the sound or it was made by the same company
According to my research those trains weren’t created by the same company and that the nyc copyed the green line and one train you were talking about Was built by Bombarder and the other two were made by Kawasaki heavy industry’s
You seemed to want to only show the shiny new cars of the T. How about some shots of the green line cars that have so much rust you can almost push your thumb through the outer body. Or some of the older redline cars that can't seem to travel a few miles without breaking down. That's what most of us that use the T see everyday.
+Greg Fitzgerald Believe it or not, none of the older cars were running when I filmed this. Granted, the blue line cars were all replaced a few years ago. The only ones that looked pretty bad were the orange line cars.
They've been slowly replacing the rusted old green line cars... but they are still around.
I have seen them in the past, but for some reason they weren't running when I filmed this. Probably because it was off peak hours.
Greg Fitzgerald . these are new cars ? haha . google delhi metro.
LOL, I ride the T daily, this is part of the charm, will the trolley fully rust out before the next station? Will the Red Line actually make it to it's next station? Quite a few of the old rust bucket trolleys though have just had their mid life overhaul, inside and out and look brand new, should last about another 20 years if they keep it maintained.
ahh yes I used to take the T to work at Logan Airport, drove to Braintree took the Red Line to Park Street then the Green Line to Government Center then the Blue Line to Airport Station and I did that for 15 years before moving to North Carolina
now you could just take the red line to south station and take the silver line right to the terminals!
Does anyone have a serious addiction of looking at trains and riding them
Привет.Отличное видео. Работа метро мне над помнило фильм ( Опасные пассажиры поезда 123). Спасибо.
When ever I wanna listen to screemo I just go to Boylston or Gov. center and then I’m satisfied.
The green line's squeaky noise lol music to my ears.
i love that subway
Trains are so cool
Very nice! Fun to watch. :)
Thought I should spread some news to you. It has been reported that Government Center (Green/Blue Line) will re-open in Late March 2016.
Also, there are some hidden gems within the system as well, such as the closed off tunnel in the Orange Line that used to be part of the El, the tunnel at Boylston (where the display trains are) used to continue to above ground, and if you wanted to, you can see the old path where the Saugus branch railroad used to be, slowly becoming a ped/bike path.
There's an old abandoned station exposed near Davis Square
I love the clip starting at 5:46
that eerie sound
Great video! Just wondering was this handheld? If it was it was hard to notice and you kept it very smooth. Thank you for the quality videos!
***** Nice spot, yes. This entire video was hand held.
Ok, thank you again for the quality videos.
And thank you for watching!
Once of the two lines I've never ridden on the other being the Silver Line buses.
I film these stations now on my channel. . It’s crazy how they have new trains now
Would you be ok with me using this footage for a video? I’ll link you’re video in the description. Thank you!
Nice set of clips at various stations Mike - hope you didn't have any hassles from "undesirables"! Cheers. Ken
Living in NYC and a frequent visitor of Boston I can honestly say that the "T" is in serous need of some new rolling stock. The worst I experienced was the Orange Line where the cars were rusting out all over the place and the suspensions bottoming out at high speeds. Not a good look for such a fine city ....
It’s interesting, the blue line is a combo of 3rd rail and overhead wire... usually it’s ether or...
Can I ask what might seem to be a silly question? Why do motorman (or operators) of Blue, Red and Orange Line subway trains turn their headlights off (i.e. 0:52 and 4:51) just before entering a station? Just asking out of curiosity since subways on other systems leave their headlights on throughout the duration of their operation whether they are underground or not.
+TheChicagoL I have a feeling that they are brighter than that of the Green Line so they turn them off as courtesy to the passengers on the platform. I am not sure though so that is just a wild guess.
Anon21486 Exactly it.
The red line paint scheme reminds me of BR Intercity Swallow
Nice video! Did you happen to catch the commuter rail?
Yes, I did! You will see more videos of that in the coming months.
Wow!..
Subway trains galore 1
Where is the orange line in this video?
Boston!!!
Regular T rider here.. Famous? lol Try "Infamous". =) Love the T... despite all of its huge issues; and they are plentiful.
Did you get to go to either north station or south station
I passed through both of them but I didn't get any video this time.
why the headlights are not on?
I like Boston (:
Those seats looked very hard. I think I'd sooner stand :0)
They’re made of fabric.
and padding
Dang i rember this vids when i was young actully where orange line lol
Also, could you tell me what horn that is in the "endtro"...
Steven Michael That is a Nathan M5 type horn. It is on locomotive Western Pacific 713 at the Niles Canyon Railway in the greater bay area of California.
Thanks!
Headlights?
No one noticed how sharp the turns are on the Green Line?
mike can you put more subway trains it haves a 4 train a train b train and more please i am your biggest fan with trains i love trains so much🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
NO ORANGE LINE😓
Are the flashes of light by the wheels the train getting electricity?
Negative current escaping
The trolley sounds like a NYC Subway R142A and R143
And R188
Good job👌🌘🌏
I love train
Mbta green line sounds like R188 4 5 6 trains even 7
Same propulsion
Hey you commented on my old channel
Are those stations still 20 degrees below 0 in winter ?
No
EvanAviator I think it depends if it is below zero in winter also this person posted the comment 4 years ago
Omg slay queen sis
Station annunciator sounds like he's scared to talk
Did you come to Virginia?
Trainman0425 Yes, I visited the north eastern part of Virginia. Those videos will be posted some time not too far down the line.
in Chicago the L train has it's headlights on.
Is the Aquarium station on an incline?
I believe so.
does the T subway have turnstiles?
MBTA is in really low help right now trust me come to Boston
IHeart Boston D:
One of the must do if i go to boston is ride the pccs
What an odd subway. Empty stations with depressed announcers. Individual subway cars with pantographs. Underground trolleys. I don't even remember seeing any stations last couple times I was in Boston.
Also like the exploding title graphic.
s0nnyburnett Obviously the filming was done at late night/ midday on a weekend. Normal days things get insane.
The emptiness can be explained by off peak hours.
The depressed nature of the announcer is due to it be automated and not in the best acoustic environment.
Each blue line car has a pantograph because each car is individual in operation. The blue line has two pickup modes because on the coast above ground salt air would corrode the 3rd rail and there would also be icing issues, so overhead wires are used on half the line.
I will agree with you on the stations not being immediately visible. They blend in which is both a good thing and a bad thing.
Also, this is the blue line. From my experience, there isn't too much traffic on that line, that and combined with what others have said about peak hours, there isn't much traffic.
s0nnyburnett The announcers aren't deppressed because that's a recording.
It depends on what time it is. In my experience the green line is rarely "empty," but there are times where people are just in work or at school. Weekends are usually busy, thursday/friday nights are crowded. Wednesday at 9-11....not that busy. However, 11-1 it can get crowded as people are on their lunch breaks. Of course, rush hour between 4-6 is busy. Most of the stations are underground unless you're moving away from the city. The orange line is no longer elevated, it's completely underground. Actually all of the stations are underground in Boston proper. If you take the green line (either branches) outward, they eventually come up and enter street level. I can't speak about the blue line, the red line, or the silver as I've never taken them.
What is the deal with Aquarium station? there's always water all over the damn place. I don't understand why their tracks in the tunnel still use ballast. why would you need it on a concrete base?
Cause people come from the aquarium....
No orange line.
How old is this underground railroad?
Dan Prosl the 2nd oldest in the world
Yeah so the stations sound like hell
All y'all be careful. Tray that is really really scary and dark
Is the Boston transit authority better than the one in NYC? MTA is the worst. I plan on moving to Boston soon. I hope their public transportation is better than the MTA.
iRock Lol.
David Fuller Not better than the MTA, though.
Nope it is worse the the MTA. Though it is heavily used they still are running ancient equipment. There are third world countries that provide better service than the MBTA. The funny thing is the MBTA is considered to one of the best transit systems in North America but looks downright decrepit compared to other first world countries.
Having been to Boston I've come to appreciate the MTA and it's issues. I was on trains in Boston that would not have passed serviced muster in NYC. I also didn't like having to duck to navigate Park Street.
theyr both pretty comparable save for the difference in numbers
The blue line cars sound almost like the CTA 5000 series cars
+TrainSounds What you saw here were the 0600 series Blue Line cars built in 1978-79. These cars have been replaced by the 0700 series. The 0600 series cars were retired by the time that the CTA 5000 series cars came into use.
I went there before
yes the stations were a bit gritty but I love the T
You have such a big amount of history.
The tram sounds like the nyc r142A r143 and r188
The T Party!
Pantographs even tho it uses 3rd rail?? Wow
I live in Chicago.
R143 and R142a/R188 Sounds
Blue line needs work ASAP.
It looks so grim inside of the stations...
If you go to Boston it's actually pretty lively
probably late at night
For some reason, I like grim stations.
Do the NYC subway
Here in canada it's a steam engine under ground
The Boston the T Trains
I went to the t train at Aquarium to government center
The green line is the trolley
Does anyone else like the sound of the blue line trains powering up to leave or is it just me?
Same I love it
I love the red line leaving sounds too!
Same with the green one!!!!
I AM OBSESSED WITH THE BLUE LINE POWERING UP!
Especially 2:19
Yea me too
why when they go foward they have set red lights
They cut the headlights off to avoid blinding passengers and when they do that, it turns the tail lights on by default.
red Front Lights?
Those are the rear markers. They cut off the headlights when entering to avoid blinding passengers and in doing so, it triggers the tail lights.
sounds like the r188s on the nyc subway... kinda.
I thought this was Alaska’s song
