  • Known popularly as the "T", Boston's MBTA subway trains provide a vital role to the Commonwealth, moving thousands of people around each day. Here, we take a brief look at the Blue, Green, and Red subway lines as they zoom around underground. You will also visit one of the first subway stations in America - Boylston (opened in 1897).

    When I was in jr. high here in NYC, I rode every line of the system after school, sometimes getting home real late! I saw parts of the City I had never seen before even though I was born here! One of my goals is to ride the subways of North America. I've been on the T many, many years ago but didn't get the chance to explore the entire system. Likewise, I rode the SE:PTA in Philly and Marta in Atlanta but those excursions were brief. I coined the term 'urbanrailer ' to describe my love and fascination with subways, light rail, trolleys, buses and commuter railroads. I want to see Chicago and DC, the BART, etc. I had Lionel trains as a kid but the real trains were outside my building! Initially, there were three divisions: IRT, BMT and IND; each had it's own rolling stock, station design, sound and smell and by 'smell' I'm not talking about anything offensive; they had a unique sound and smell. Taking the train to Coney Island was fascinating; the idea of a subway to the beach! I understand Lionel makes limited New York City subway train sets that are quite expensive but I would love to have one of them some day! They've just about replaced all the old stock here; the new trains, can't remember their designations, make a weird high pitched sound as they motor up! Are there any other urbanrailers out there? Let me know if you share my enthusiasm for urban transit systems!

      Ahmasi Lloyd Hey man! Fellow New Yorker here and as a teenager I also took every single subway line on every single stop in NYC. I would plan my weekends to take the train to different neighborhoods.
      Outside of NYC I have taken the subways in Toronto, Montreal, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami (more of a rail system), BART, Chicago, DC and Baltimore. Outside of North America I took the Tokyo subway and train system which is the absolute best from my personal experience.

      I may be one. Since I lived in New York City until recently, I've been fascinated with the rolling stock and system of the subway there, arising from how it's the main form of travel to go somewhere interesting or fun. I've had an interest for the city buses for a short time too.

    You seemed to want to only show the shiny new cars of the T. How about some shots of the green line cars that have so much rust you can almost push your thumb through the outer body. Or some of the older redline cars that can't seem to travel a few miles without breaking down. That's what most of us that use the T see everyday.

      LOL, I ride the T daily, this is part of the charm, will the trolley fully rust out before the next station? Will the Red Line actually make it to it's next station? Quite a few of the old rust bucket trolleys though have just had their mid life overhaul, inside and out and look brand new, should last about another 20 years if they keep it maintained.

    Thought I should spread some news to you. It has been reported that Government Center (Green/Blue Line) will re-open in Late March 2016.
    Also, there are some hidden gems within the system as well, such as the closed off tunnel in the Orange Line that used to be part of the El, the tunnel at Boylston (where the display trains are) used to continue to above ground, and if you wanted to, you can see the old path where the Saugus branch railroad used to be, slowly becoming a ped/bike path.

    Living in NYC and a frequent visitor of Boston I can honestly say that the "T" is in serous need of some new rolling stock. Can I ask what might seem to be a silly question? Why do motorman (or operators) of Blue, Red and Orange Line subway trains turn their headlights off (i.e. 0:52 and 4:51) just before entering a station? Just asking out of curiosity since subways on other systems leave their headlights on throughout the duration of their operation whether they are underground or not.

    • @Anon21486
      @Anon21486 Před 8 lety

      +TheChicagoL I have a feeling that they are brighter than that of the Green Line so they turn them off as courtesy to the passengers on the platform. I am not sure though so that is just a wild guess.

    • @zackboone15
      @zackboone15 Před 7 lety +9

      The emptiness can be explained by off peak hours.
      The depressed nature of the announcer is due to it be automated and not in the best acoustic environment.
      Each blue line car has a pantograph because each car is individual in operation. The blue line has two pickup modes because on the coast above ground salt air would corrode the 3rd rail and there would also be icing issues, so overhead wires are used on half the line.
      I will agree with you on the stations not being immediately visible. They blend in which is both a good thing and a bad thing.

    • @vincinuge
      @vincinuge Před 7 lety +2

      Also, this is the blue line. From my experience, there isn't too much traffic on that line, that and combined with what others have said about peak hours, there isn't much traffic.

    • @felixthecat2786
      @felixthecat2786 Před 6 lety

      It depends on what time it is. In my experience the green line is rarely "empty," but there are times where people are just in work or at school. Weekends are usually busy, thursday/friday nights are crowded. Wednesday at 9-11....not that busy. However, 11-1 it can get crowded as people are on their lunch breaks. Of course, rush hour between 4-6 is busy. Most of the stations are underground unless you're moving away from the city. The orange line is no longer elevated, it's completely underground. Actually all of the stations are underground in Boston proper. If you take the green line (either branches) outward, they eventually come up and enter street level. I can't speak about the blue line, the red line, or the silver as I've never taken them.

      Nope it is worse the the MTA. Though it is heavily used they still are running ancient equipment. There are third world countries that provide better service than the MBTA. The funny thing is the MBTA is considered to one of the best transit systems in North America but looks downright decrepit compared to other first world countries.

      Having been to Boston I've come to appreciate the MTA and it's issues. I was on trains in Boston that would not have passed serviced muster in NYC. I also didn't like having to duck to navigate Park Street.

      +TrainSounds What you saw here were the 0600 series Blue Line cars built in 1978-79. These cars have been replaced by the 0700 series. The 0600 series cars were retired by the time that the CTA 5000 series cars came into use.

      They cut the headlights off to avoid blinding passengers and when they do that, it turns the tail lights on by default.

      Those are the rear markers. They cut off the headlights when entering to avoid blinding passengers and in doing so, it triggers the tail lights.
