Formed in 1999, most of their songs are about Military History. They tell the story without taking sides. Lead singer Joakim Broden and bassist Par Sundstrom are the primary songwriters, and only original members left. Chris Rorland and Tommy Johansson on guitar, and Hannes van Dahl on drums round out the current lineup. A stand alone single in 2019, the video for this was made in conjunction with Wargaming, the company that makes the World of Warships game.
10 albums to date, 9 of which are history themed.
If you want more from them, try the music video for Christmas Truce, or animated story videos for Night Witches, No Bullets Fly, Lady of the Dark, The First Soldier, and The Red Baron.

Sinking the Bismarck was a big fight for the Royal Navy. The other big German Battleship of this class was the Tirpitz. Again, a massive amount of effort (ships, planes, etc.) to sink 1 massive Battle Wagon.

It's great to see people getting into sabaton; they take no sides; they simply make awesome songs about different conflicts and campaigns; and they pay respect to a lot of individuals who the world has forgotten. I have seen them live twice, amazing both times. If they are ever touring near you, it's definitely a must to see them live. You won't be disappointed. Also, being ex army myself, I can relate to so many songs they sing about too.

Welcome to the Sabaton club! The way they take historical events and place them in a media that not only tells you the story but also feel in some way the emotion these people must of felt is amazing and as a Vet and historian they line these up perfectly. If interested in listening to any other songs by them would highly recommend - No bullets fly, Great war, Christmas truce and Motorhead cover of 1916

I do hope you will continue on this path, they have so much good songs.
I know you already got some suggestions, but I would anyway want to give you a few suggestions, some 'must see'
Start with 'En livstid i krig' live from the Great Tour in Gothenburg, its in Swedish but use the subs. Amazing performance!!!
You should also try out 'No bullets fly' the animated story video. Really emotional. Finally why not try 'Christmas truce'. The official music video is a masterpiece!
    Good reaction!!!

Easily one of the biggest metal bands in Europe, Sabaton's war inspired themes and (always) true stories told in music form is just perfect. Back in 2019 when they played at Wacken Open Air in Germany they had two full stages and hearing 50 000+ people sing along to every single song was amazing.

@gundalfthelost1624 - Biggest one? Very close. Pretty good, also it is worth checking their history channel (separated from the main bannd channel in a way).
But let's not forget about band such as Shakra too (with their songs such as "Why", "Something you don't understand", "Hello" or others).
Plenty of other good European bands out there, including "Florence in the machine" or something like a "Nordic Union", or a classic "Accept" (with Wolf Hoffmann and his approach to working with Ava-Rebekah or the Prague symphonic orchestra - which also could have been seen at the Wacken) :)
And there is always Rammstein with their pyrotechnic approach during live concerts.
      Edit: added Rammstein bit.

That live show is nowhere near their biggest one. In woodstock, poland 2012 they were at a festival with 500,000+ people and another 200,000+ came just to listen to sabaton. Estimated 750,000-850,000 people were there and a few of the shots taken there (i think from a drone) shows that the crowd is insanely huge even without thinking of the numbers you can see there are lots of people

1:23 The name of the boat is a tongue in cheek callback to one of the songs that made them a world-wide known metal band, Primo Victoria, which is a song about the D-Day landings.

Welcome to the history channel called Sabaton. As others mentioned they are from my home country Sweden, and they write almost every song related to an historical event or person in war history. Fun fact is that the drummer of Sabaton, Hannes Van Dahl is married to the lead vocalist Floor Jansen of Nightwish. So, if you never have experienced them, I suggest You take a look at one of their masterpieces "Ghost Love Score" - the live version from Wacken Open Air 2013.
Nightwish is a Finnish band with a Dutch singer and an English multi-instrumentalist.

Bismarck sank the Hood which was a top British Battleship thought to be unsinkable but we’ve heard that before! It hit the right spot and the Hoods magazine blew up destroying it. The British then pursued the Bismarck and sank it. Lots of lives lost on both sides. War never a good thing

there is much more of this.
Sabaton is a Swedish band with a loooong list of history based music.
Sabaton also has an award winning history channel that gives background to over 100 if their songs (not music award, academic, aimed at education of the public) .
Sabaton videos are often have dedictions and/or messages at the end, just like you saw here, perhaps not always, but, watching to the very end is frequently well worth it.
Animated STORY videos (short animated background history with music videos in them)
    No bullets fly
    Night witches
    Lady of the dark
    Red baron
    first soldier
    epic videos.
Bismark, about the sinking of the ship
    Defence of Moscow, self explained.
Christmas truce, about the spontaneous truce in some parts of the western front during Christmas 1914
40:1, about polish soldiers, badly outnumbered (just under 750 in all) facing 42 000 germans, they where BADLY outgunned desperately defending against the German invasion 1939 (with odds actually close to 55:1 they held for 3 DAYS when ammunition and supplies ran out.
Uprising, the Warsaw Uprising against the nazi germans during 1944.
To hell and back, they tell the story of Audie Murphy (highly decorated) and his struggle AFTER the war, so about PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers can face.
Fields of verdun, the 300+ day long battle fought there.
Price of a mile, about the battle of Passchendaele
Screaming Eagles, about the battle of the bulge
    Live performances
    40:1 from poland
    Uprising from poland
En livstid I krig live from Göteborg Sweden (in Swedish but there are subtitles) , very heavy again, about thoughts of a young man going to war.
these are just some, there are plenty more.

    -To Hell and Back
    -No Bullets Fly
    -Lady of the Dark

Where they tell the stories behind their songs.

  • @tonyolsson8794

When it comes to Sabaton there are five videos rhat stands out for me:
    * Christmas Truce
    * En Livstid i Krig (A Lifetime at War) live from Gothenberg. Make sure you have captions on since they sing in Swedish and the lyrics is quite powerful.
    * No Bullets Fly - make sure it is the "animated story" version and watch to the very end, it is well worth it.
    * Night witches - also the animated STORY.
    * 1916 - this is a Möterhead cover that is just awesome.
I want to listem to the subtitle parts of both Christams Truce and 1916. The vocals in the Christmas Truce subtitle part is done by Floor Jansen (the wife of the drummer in Sabaton and lead vocalist in Nightwish) is just stunning. The cello in the subtitle part of 1916 is performed by Tina Guo. She is just awesome and have worked with Sabaton several times.
    Another long post 😢

Great reaction. Thanks for putting the spotlight on some Swedish metal as we are indeed one of the worlds biggest producers/exporters of music.
So much more music to discover from this tiny country in the north though so I hope you will return here in your "journey" 🙂
Bands like Eclipse, Seventh Wonder, Strevellna, Opeth, Scar Symmetry, Evergrey, Therion, Amon Amarth, Dynazty, Cult Of Luna, Soen, Deathstars, some of my favorites, all deserves a reaction I think :-) And Kamelot even though they're not a Swedish formed band at least the singer is from here.
My overall favorite band though are from Australia. They're called Teramaze. Any chance you could do a reaction to one of their songs?
I'm new to your channel so I haven't had the time to figure out what your preferred genre is yet and every Teramaze song is different from the other so I'm not sure which one I should recommend.
Their best song in my opinion is The Thieves Are Out. It's the ultimate melodic progressive metal song.
If you prefer a bit more groove you should probably go with Jackie Seth.
A more modern, almost flirting a bit with nu metal, a song called In Solitude might be the one for you.
But perhaps the most popular of their songs is the easy listened Battle, inspired by the lockdowns and protests in Australia in 2021.
    🙏🙏🙏

I think "Christmas Truce" is the best video and one of the best songs of them yet, but they also have other great songs about wartime events that are often heroic, yet also very human and show that sometimes there are people being kind and making ethical decisions in times where those usually are not on the mind of most taking part in those events. Some videos also have added information and sequences that compound on those words sung. "No bullets fly" is a good example of that, but "Lady of the Dark" showing how women can and did influence wars as fighters is a strong contender. "Red Baron" has a good vibe, too. And let us not forget "Night Witches" and "En livstid i krig". I would recommend listening to the songs from the "Carolus Rex" album in Swedish, as they sound way better in their native language.
You just have to love the Scandinavian Metal scene, as they are really tight. Combining several groups and branching out into others. As others have pointed out, Hannes wife is Floor Jansen, formerly from the Dutch group Epica (and others), now front singer of the Finnish group Nightwish. Thommy Johannson is playing guitar (but can play a lot of other instruments) and is also a great singer himself (see his solo channel) and is playing with his own bands Majestica and Golden Resurrection. Sabaton also helped Kawaii Metal band Babymetal and took them as a co-band in 2023 (together with Finnish band Lordi). There is another band to check out: Babymetal. They were helped along in the beginning by DragonForce (also check them out...), who are good friends (and sometimes funny frenemies) with Sabaton. I like that everybody is somehow connected to everybody else and is getting along. When you look at other genres (*couch* Hiphop, Pop *cough*) people are at each others throat, badmouthing each other, at some times shooting each other... this is strange. While metal is often seen as brutal and grim and gory, the people themselves are friendly and nice. Goes for the bands and for the fans. And it does not matter if you go Glam Metal or Death Metal or whatever. If you need help and some friends, go where they play metal^^ Have a good time browsing the catalogue of bands and keep up the good work.

The Bismark was the third largest battleship class ever made. Only the Iowas and Yamatos were bigger.
It was armed with 8 fifteen-inch guns in four turrets. The diameter of the shell was about the same as a snare drum, it was five and a half feet long and weighed going on 1800 lbs.
It's guns had a 40,000 yard range, that's over 22 miles, though effective range was much less.
At realistic combat ranges it could punch through 16.5 inches of armor, to give you an idea, Yamato, the largest battleship ever made, had a maximum armor thickness of 16.1 inches.
It had a maximum speed of 34 and half miles per hour, there were faster battleships, but not that many.
The video mentioned Bismark sank the Hood, a British Battlecruiser/Fast Battleship, about the same size/armament as Bismark, they neglected to mention that it did it in five minutes of battle.
While not the invincible monster that fans make it out to be, it was a nasty piece of work.

Welcome to the rabbit-hole that is Sabaton's music. It's going to be a wild journey.
If I may give you a few recommendations, all of which can be found on their youtube channel:
(also, keep watching tothe end. Sometimes there are easter-eggs hidden in these videos.)
No Bullets Fly - Animated Story Video (Warning! Tissues strongly recommended!)
Night Witches - Animated Story Video (Tissues also recommended, but not as direly as with the previous entry)

The Last Stand - Live - The Great Tour - Budapest
The Attack of the Dead Men - Live - The Great Tour - London
En Livstid I Krig - Live - The Great Tour - Gothenburg (subtitles recommended)
The Red Baron - Live - The Great Tour - Belin
82nd All The Way - Live - The Great Tour - Munich
    and many, MANY more...
Trivia: Sabaton's drummer is married to the lead singer of Nightwish, Floor Jansen - and their music is yet another rabbit-hole unto itself. Let's just say among fans she is often nicknamed the "Valkyrie Queen".
If you want an impression of that, have a look at "Ghost Love Score" (Wacken 2013) specifically.

Seven Pillars Of Wisdom and The Valley Of Death are my favorite Sabaton songs right now, cause i've heard the other big hits of them so many times through out the years i've burned out haha. But man is Seven Pillar Of Wisdom good, it's just something about that melody. It's about Lawrence of Arabia who united the Arabic tribes against the Turks (ottomans) in World War One, by basically learning their culture and arabic and becoming one of them.

Andy, if you liked Bismarck, then I highly recommend the following:
    1) Primo Victoria (Video made in partnership with World of Tanks)
    2) Night Witches, Animated Story Video
    3) No Bullets Fly, Animated Story Video
    4) Christmas Truce (With a special vocal surprise during the credits)
    5) Defense of Moscow (If you want to feel patriotism to another country not even your own)
Sabaton does not do a bad song or video. Period.
Edit: Andy, since you asked, my recommendation for your next country is India, with Indian folk metal band Bloodywood. Described as "Linkin Park mixed with electronica, topped by curry," Bloodywood is a metal band that fuses traditional Indian instruments like the dhol drum with modern instrumentation. Vocally, they have a rapper, Raoul Kerr, and a growler, Jayant. Bloodywood also sings in both Hindi and English, and all of their music is about an important social issue. Bloodywood is also the _only_ rock or metal band that is 100% independent, having no label, and depending entirely on Patreons and the like for funding.
Here is my Top 5 recommendations:
    1) Jee Veerey. Hindi for "Brave One," Jee Veerey is about fighting depression and mental illness.
    2) Endurant. About fighting bullying.
    3) Dana Dan. About SA, and fighting to change it. (Note: If you react to this one, turn on the Closed Captions for the lyrics.)
    4) Aaj. Hindi for "Today," this one is about not letting your past prevent you from living your best life, and encouraging people to live better lives.
    5) Gaddar. This one is about how politics don't work for the common people, in which case, the common people need to change things themselves.

Bismarck, one of the largest and most heavily armed battleships in history that ironically heralded the end of the battleship’s supremacy over the water in favour of aircraft carriers.
It also kind of was the beginning of the end for the Axis power over the Atlantic.
Picking favourites from Sabaton is hard, they just don’t miss.

There are two countries I would recommend but first, a very good reaction.
Finland is.my first choice. Their biggest band and the biggest metal band right now is Nightwish. As someone also added a post earlier. Their song Ghost Love Score from Wacken (pronounced as Vacken) 2013 is the definite first listen choice. Is it their best? Hard to say since every song they make is awesome and thier "best". If you listen to Nightwish, Gabriel will show up and let you know what song to listen to and he has a very good suggestion to in which order. Nightwish is a symphonc metal band so I guess you would like it you seem to have some orchestration in the music. Also I think that Wacken 2013 is their best peformance since all song from that concert is amazing. Their other recorded concerts are extremely good as well but for me Wacken 2013 has become my favorite.
For other Finnish bands I am not that sure of but I am sure someone can help.
The second country I would suggest is Netherlands. The goto band there is Epica in a similar style to Nightwish. The lead singer in Epica Simone Simons and the current lead singer in Nightwish Floor Jansen (2013-) is very good friends (Floor is also from the Netherlands). The sing together in Sancta Terra and I think that is a very good song.
Another band from the Netherlands is Within Temptation. Not as famous as Epica but a band that I like very much. Lead singer is Sharon den Adel has a very beautiful voice and their music lovely. I would suggest thier song Faster. It seems to be one of the most popular, and it is good.
I apologize for all misspellings and grammar errors, and for the quite too long post.
Have a nice Halloween with Ghost ❤️😱😉

There is actually a little something about the video. The captain of the ship at the start of the video is actually the young sailor who was seen being rescued at the end along with the compass (video wise). In real life I think the character is based off an actual sailor who was on the Bismarck. Go to Sabaton History Channel for more information.

You don't know anything about the Bismarck? Well, I have some good news for you: Sabaton has a history channel on CZcams (Sabaton History). They are partnered with a historian named Indy Neidell (The Great War, WW2, Time Ghosts) who goes into the historical events that inspired their songs. There is an episode about the Bismarck. He was a hell of a ship (that's right, the Bismarck was referred to as a "he"). I also recommend you check out some of their other songs, because while they kind of like Queen, in that they have a lot of different styles. "Bismarck" (like you said) has an 80's vibe, "The Ballad of Bull" has a classical vibe, "The Final Solution" is very somber, "The First Soldier" has a "70's/80's Sports movie" vibe (think Rocky's theme). They also have some pretty good covers too, like "1916" by Motorhead.

Well, it was Hitler and the captain who were really keen on calling the Bismack "he" instead of the traditional "she" (everyone else pretty much just fell in line for reasons of self-preservation)... I don't give a damn about Hitler's opinion, though the captain's does hold some weight... Still, I'm fine with either "he" or "she" 🙃

    • @jenswurm
      @jenswurm Před 11 měsíci +5

Any source on "he" being used there? I keep reading about that in English comment sections, but as a German i have never heard of that ship being called a "he". There are some second hand reports that the captain allegedly wanted it to be called a "he", but that may well have been nothing but a joke. It was something like, "this ship is so powerful it should be called a he, wink wink"
A source of additional confusion for people unfamiliar with German grammar also may also be that the genitive form of the female pronoun is actually the same as the nominative form of the male pronoun:
Die Bismarck (female pronoun, nominative, used in pretty much all German references to the ship, including military historian literature)
      Der Bismarck (male pronoun)
Der Verlust der Bismarck ("loss of the Bismarck" uses the pronoun "der" but refers to a female subject. A male subject would use the pronoun "des" in genitive case there, such as "Der Verlust des Schlüssels")

@@jenswurm There have been multiple sources, one being the Imperial War Museum. But it seems that a lot of historians also claim this and point to the captain of the Bismarck as the reason for it.

    • @jenswurm
      @jenswurm Před 11 měsíci +2

@@lokiodinson2326 So it all boils down to the captain.
Even if we take it for granted that the captain actually meant it when he said that as opposed to merely joking, he wouldn't have the authority to change the name of the ship, much less the grammar of the German language.
It's like the captain of the USS Nimitz asserting that his ship shall be called the USS Mickey Mouse. That'd have no bearing on its real name whatsoever, other than being a fun bit of trivia.
