  • Under the Muqattam Hills in Cairo lies the City of the Dead; 2.5 square miles of Islamic-era cemeteries, where the cities poorest have built their humble homes, living amongst the tombs. In a section of this neighborhood called Sayed Aisha you will find the Friday Market, also known as the Animal Market. You will find everything from turtles to cats and dogs, from fish to falcons to parrots and monkeys. Come along with me as I visit this chaotic and crowded market to witness yet another side of life in Cairo.
    Welcome to the channel! My name's Gisselle, I'm a budget traveler and have been to 6 out of the 7 continents, visiting 20+ countries, living for some time in Sydney, Australia as well as in Saigon, Vietnam. I am currently living in Cairo, Egypt and exploring all this beautiful country has to offer while visiting nearby countries as well. I am a lover of language and a culturally curious lady just making my way through life one day at a time. I live to learn, I love to travel and explore, try new things and meet interesting people anywhere and everywhere in the world. Come along with me as I solo travel the globe and discover fascinating new places, try delicious local food, meet lovely people, and share a moment in time on this beautiful planet, our Earth.

    Ah, collecting pigeons. Those were interesting days. My grandmother had a whole pigeon coop that my grandfather built for her as a gift and she spent decades raising her flock. She would have pigeons of all colors and types; brown, white, grey, spotted, dappled and all sizes. That was in Alexandria, btw. I remember some douchebag neighbor from a block away tried stealing her flock and she was sooooo pissed. She gathered all 23 of her grandchildren (My 12 year old ass included) and we marched to that dude's apartment building and gave him a...talk, let's say. Suffice it to say, he learned his lesson.
    Its been a long time since I've visited a souk like this. The nostalgia hits hard, and I appreciate your videos.

      Lol, wow that's a cool story! Yeah raising pigeons is quite popular here in Egypt. I went up to a pigeon tower in Mansheyit Naser aka Garbage City, that was a cool experience. czcams.com/video/G_ujW2i48c0/video.html
      I'm glad my videos can bring back some nostalgia, thanks so much for watching 😊🙏

    Wow! I just got back from a wonderful trip to Egypt! I would not have the guts to hit the market. Great people in Egypt and a highly recommended trip! It is a good idea to go on a tour group for your first trip. I felt safe. Safer in Cairo than in some cities in the US.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Před rokem +4

      Thanks Roman! So happy you had a good time in Egypt, it's a wild and amazing country, isn't it?! I also feel safer here than in many cities in the US. And I also agree, I think for some people it may be best to get a group tour their first time here. But perhaps not for everyone? For example, my first time here in Egypt I came alone, no friends and with no tour. Actually, my first time here has been my only time here in Egypt, I planned to travel here for 3 months and then continue my journey in other countries, but I fell in love with Egypt and just never ended up leaving 😅But it definitely depends on what someone is comfortable doing, and I'm sure past experience in traveling (especially solo and in other developing countries) is a factor in that confidence and comfortability to come here and travel solo or without a tour.

Just remember that U Can film anywhere as long as it’s not a government building. I love your soul and how you interact with people and u hv a good sense of humor

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Před rokem +4

      😂Yeah I butcher Arabic sometimes 🤣But I try anyway, haha. That guy was definitely an officer, I had to follow him over to a nearby checkpoint where a bunch of police and police car were parked and go back and forth with them about what I was doing and if it was okay. I can film in many places in Egypt but the police can also give me a difficult time, so I prefer to be as cooperative as possible and make it not only easier on them but on myself. They don't like someone arguing with them (it's a power and authority thing) and can make it more difficult for me in the end. And like I mentioned later in the video, I ended up seeing the same undercover police later in the market, so I'm glad they "gave me permission" in the end, or they would have seen me filming without their consent and made me delete it or something. Thanks so much for the compliment and support! I try to have fun and get a long with people, life is so much better that way 😁

Egypt has a lot less thieves than any other place I've lived around the world. And I'm usually very well aware of my surroundings, as I used to sell things on the streets for many years, so I'm used to the kind of environment where you have crazy people, druggies, drunks and thieves on the streets

    There is other part of this market that you might be interested in too. It is also held evrey friday. In the same area. It is basically a market for very unfortunate people. Ask for the train rail (el seka el hadid) or ask for the scrap sellers (betoo el khorda). Street vendors sell actual trash and scrap there. They are basically garbage collectors who find any thing that is almost decent. Thrown away phone, tv, cloths, toys. Almost every thing that have been thrown to trash but can be used as is without recycling ends up in this market. Or need simple repair. Also you may find old books and many more. The scene and the people would be very interesting for your content.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Před rokem

      Wow, very observant of you! Actually the guy in green jacket around 6:02 was pushing up against me a lot, which is why I said "This kid, has been...." and trailed off. I just put my free hand (one not holding the camera) behind my back like a butler or waiter would do, to give some extra space so people wouldn't push up against me. That fixed that problem. But I was thinking that's maybe why he wasn't wanting to be on camera. Not real groping but he definitely didn't need to be that f-in close to me. If it was just for a second I can understand because maybe the crowd pushes you into me, but it happened a few times and that's when I looked at him, said that and let him pass me. Not a big deal, but interesting that you noticed something around that time. Good eyes Dallas!

    to answer your question. Some people raise these fancy "expensive" pigeons as a hobby. its kinda weird because they sometimes also raise and eat "regular" pigeons... no comment. They are usually raised in a shed/birdhouse on their roof.
    Also a side note, "edible" egyptian pigeons are a different species than the grey ones you see in the street. They are fed certain foods and dont scavenge trash like street pigeons.

      Thank for your detailed explanation! I actually discovered more about that after visiting some of the towers in Manshiyat Naser, I made a video about that here:

      I have eaten hamam, it's not bad! Though there is not a lot of meat on it 😅

      Yes there were a few boys and a man or two that followed me around, but they weren't dangerous or anything, just annoying 😅It's not a big deal and can (and has) happened in many places around the world I have visited, especially in big local markets like this. Thankfully, I am a very capable and strong woman and know how to handle situations like this, so I didn't feel threatened or scared at all, just found it obnoxious after a while of those boys on motorbike following me around. If it came to a situation where I would need help, I would not hesitate to make a scene and ask surrounding people for help. Thank you so much for your concern, and for watching! 🥰

      @@karemmetrial1450 Yeah I tried to be friendly at first and it didn't bother me too much but you're right, the culture here is different and me being friendly maybe gives them the wrong impression and that can lead to problems. It is habit for me to be friendly, I have always been my entire life, and it is okay in places like USA, but it can present issues here and in other countries with similar cultures. I have learned a lot through my travels and I know not to be too friendly, but sometimes I forget or find it hard not to be because it is my natural way of being. @@mikeymjh It does, actually. Mainly the wording "this race," as if all of humankind has not done this in the past and in many parts of the world continues to do so. Calling people animals, as if you are somehow better. It's easy to judge from a distance with comfort and privilege surrounding you, meanwhile not only the animals are suffering here. It's not your place to judge, and your disgust and disrespect for people makes you more of an animal than anyone I have met here. With such privilege, one would think you would have the education, intelligence, understanding and capacity for compassion. Clearly, that concept is foreign to you, despite all your privileges.

    I don’t understand why Egyptian men seem to be NEVER seen a woman or what? Why there are so many men on the streets and where are all the women? I think you should be careful at certain parts of the town. It is not worth to risk your life. Be safe and be careful

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Před rokem +1

      No of course there are many women on the streets, but the culture is different here just as in India and other places around the world. You see more men on the streets because it is more typical for them to be working than the women. Of course there are many women working here in Egypt as well, but the men working outweigh the women, especially when it comes to the markets and shops on the street. You will see more women in retail shops and office jobs, and also fruit and veggie stands. You don't see many women here in this market compared to men just as in the camel market, because the men are usually the ones coming here. It is a very local market, which is the kind of thing I enjoy. It was totally safe and I had a good time. I love outdoor local markets 😊
