Here's a take I haven't seen yet -- I think Frank really really wants to have stuff that appeals to the gay community and to the wealthy community simultaneously. I feel like he has some agenda there (especially with the explicit promo ads). And it's a really fucking weird intersection of bullshit. If you listen to the latest stuff, and the fact that a lot of the vinyls and unreleased stuff directly reference the gay club scene and how prominent sexuality is part of his canon of work, this drop really screamed to me that it's luxury stuff but DEFINITELY NOT for the masses and it's intentional. He wants to be high fashion and be his own entity in general. The couch he bought and displayed and the set designs of his stuff is all high-tier designers that literally no one can afford (Tom Sachs, his couch on his insta is like 1970s art

This isn't really about the product itself, it's a 5D marketing ploy to build and reinforce Frank's brand/image/mystique and of course, generate buzz around him/Homer. I seriously doubt this was created with any intent to sell for profit other than off a tiny handful of rich hypebeasts with no taste. The amount of conversation this has stirred up already has put Frank back in the front of people's minds, wouldn't be surprised if he dropped some new music fairly soon.

As a fan of his music, I would be ecstatic, but realistically this is just marketing for Homer and nothing more. Homer's stock probably goes up if Frank even insinuates he is making new music or shows his face. Ridiculously overpriced fashion objects have been a marketing trick of fashion houses for over a decade now. I don't think Frank's heart is in music anymore. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if the weird invasive toxic para-social community around him, losing his brother, and creating a modern classic was too much for him. If he is a perfectionist, it is completely possible that he believes he can never make something as good as his previous work, so he just doesn't try. People need to remember, Frank was heavily involved in Odd Future and as revealed by members overtime, their only purpose as a collective was to make as much money as possible. Major Frank fan here, just wanted to add my opinion. A lot of people have been mentioning that beyond the Homer stuff Frank has been notoriously bad with merch drops: orders not being sent and not refunding people etc. I also saw a few people mentioning his irl interactions with fans not being great. I don’t really think that he’s changed or fallen victim to fame, he’s always been like this. Frank has always viewed himself as an artist, he shies away from “fame” and has made clear several times that his fans don’t know him. For years music was his outlet for art, I think that now he’s channeling some of that energy into fashion, in the same way that he constructed these beautiful albums that strive to capture emotions and give the listener a look into his soul, he is now doing that through jewelry. In other words he’s always been into the avant-garde art stuff, I don’t think that the pricing is about money for him, I think that he values the exclusivity, he may feel that whoever is willing to spend so much money on his designs connect with him in a similar way to those who listen to his music.
I don’t think he’s turned on his fans or anything, we were never his primary focus the art was. I think he values listeners who enjoy his music the same way he appreciates those who like his jewelry they’re both privy to this part of his soul and they both see something in him that moves them. Frank has made every effort to not be viewed as a traditional celebrity, he hardly ever does interviews, he doesn’t communicate much with the public at all, and he very literally hides from the public eye. All of the issues with merch etc. have been bad, but I think much of the other complaints are born of the difference in what people expect of him as a “celebrity” vs what he sees himself as.

I think it’s kinda selfish to ask frank ocean for something as creatively depraving as an album. With the loss of his younger brother, man just needs to do what he wants.
It also seems like there wasn't supposed to be much crossover from people who consume his music to people to who want to buy his jewellery. From what it looks like, and read from his interview a while back, he's not looking to sale hundreds of pieces of jewellery. He wants to create something and put it out. It doesn't matter if it sales none or a hundred. I forgot who it was, but someone asked Frank for advice, he asked them how he was able to make the jump from one field to another so easily. Frank told him "You have to be okay with making less money". While a majority of his jewellery is expensive, I doubt he's making as much money as he did making music. I'm all here for his endeavours. It's interesting seeing artists branch out into other fields.
