    I have one (snowflake eel) its about 6 inches. I keep it in a Nano Cube 28g. Its doing just fine for now. When it gets bigger I plan to catch it and trade that sucker in. I bought it because I thought it would be cool to have. IT IS!

    Some morays labeled as freshwater such as the "Freshwater Snowflake Eel" - Gymnothorax tile that are really young saltwater or brackish eels. They are born in freshwater or brackish and make their way to sea by the time they are mature, in the wild. This is why these eels will always die long before they should in freshwater. They should gradually be acclimated to salt as they grow because their homeostatic needs change to a marine environment, regardless if they are in fresh or salt water.

    That tank is a 40gl cube but I would suggest a 75gl minimum for one full grown and a 90gl or larger if you plan to put other fish in. They can get up to 3ft and as big around as pop cans but 2-2.5ft is more common and not quite that thick. I've had mine for about 3 years and it has grown from the size in the video to about 2.5ft and now goes after cocktail shrimp like they were those krill. It currently live in a 150gl with an Emperor Angel, Cowfish, and Burrfish.

    I'd watch out he doesn't jump out if there's no lid- Eels are known for escaping- Ususally they will escape in the first few weeks if they are going to but I have talked to people who have had them for 2 years+ and then all the sudden it jumped and died!
    NIce eel though- I plan on getting one soon!

    Just a word to the wise: goldfish and many other freshwater fish are often host to numerous internal parasites which can infest marine fish. Also, regular feedings of freshwater "feeders" can result in liver damage in many predatory species. You've got a beautiful home set up for your snowflake. Enjoy him!

    If you can breed throwaway guppies, that works amazingly well for a "feeder" as they are pseudo-saltwater fish and are cleaner than goldfish.

  • @TheSeanothon
    @TheSeanothon  Před 13 lety +2

    @xtremecards How big is your eel? I think a 29gl would be pretty tight spaces for a full grown snowflake. Mine has plenty of room to come out and swim around the tank at night or during a feeding because its a 120gl. Mine would have trouble turning around in a 29gl.

  • @TheSeanothon
    @TheSeanothon  Před 12 lety

    Not at all. That tank was only a 40gl. Probably took 20-30mins to do a water change (I think that's what you're talking about). The 150gl he is in now takes about an hour to change, though

  • @TheSeanothon
    @TheSeanothon  Před 13 lety

    @Warriorsoakstar Not for long. That is a 40gl tank and the eel was just a baby. I'd say it needs at least a 75gl for life

  • @Greenturtlmonstr
    @Greenturtlmonstr Před 12 lety

    Actually, there aren't; morays are exclusively marine fish. They can survive in freshwater for limited periods of time, but it's extremely hard on their renal organs since they can't properly regulate the osmotic composition of their intracellular and interstitial tissues. Whatever you had was not a moray (member of the Muraenidae family). Whoever gave you your information was misinformed or intentionally misled you.

    @TheSeanothon  Před 12 lety

    I've fed it goldfish as the occasional treat. Not really ideal as a main source of food because it wouldn't be eating freshwater fish in the wild and saltwater fish are too expensive to be used as food.

  • @TheSeanothon
    @TheSeanothon  Před 13 lety

    @TheMysteryman334 Not for life. I would suggest a 55gl minimum for a full grown snowflake. I keep mine in a 120gl with 3 other fish. Wet/Dry filters are great. I made my own Wet/Dry filter / sump out of a 55gl.

    @jlalonde1000 There is a lid and it has not gotten out ever. Lives in a 120gl now and have never had any trouble. I had one briefly before this one that found a way out about 5 times in a week and eventually I wasn't around to put it back in. This one has never tried to get out to my knowledge. Some of it must depend on the specific eel's personality.
