    I never liked Illustrator, so I've been hacking my way through with Photoshop all these years. But once I needed to make a subway map and saw how easy it is with Illustrator, I gave it a chance. Thanks, mate- you saved my life.

    If you expand the line into a shape, then use smart guides (ctrl u) they should snap together pretty easily.

    hi terry..nice simple tutorial. thanks. i have couple of questions:
    -if i have several lines running together, and they all need to go round a corner together...how do i do that? (so there's no gaps)
    -2) when the corner is 90deg, the format of the corner looks off to me: is it possible to customise the curvature of the corner itself? without affecting the line ?
    (I have illustrator cs4)

    If you are going to create a more complex map then it would be worth learning about 'styles' and 'symbols' so you could later change the appearance of all the lines and intersections simply by changing the styles and symbols masters

    1 - make a brush with the lines you need then apply it to a single path. this will wrap the curve around a corner with no gaps. Google "retro lines in illustrator" for tutorials.
    2 - Expand or Expand Appearance will allow you to manually adjust the paths curve.

    Hi Terry! Great video! I wonder if there is a way to draw parallel lines as if routes go in the same direction - I tried moving lines closer separately but rounded corners obviously just wouldn't match...

    • @TerryMahy
      @TerryMahy  Před 6 lety +1

      You might need to look at multiple strokes (done in the appearance tab).This way the curves will relate to each other. They would have to get progressively bigger to show past the first stroke, little bit of maths and experimentation involved sorry. I would do three strokes on one path and have the middle one white. expand your path and delete the white one. They won't be paths after this, rather shapes. So do this once you have finalised it.

    The original design for that type of map was the map of the London underground. If you are interested in drawing this type of maps you can check this document (by the company Transport for london) www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/corporate/lu-signs-manual-issue04.pdf page 80
    Thanks for the hint with the round effect saves a bunch of time.

    Does anyone know any other program that lets you draw and colour lines AND lets you add rounded corners to them. I would really like to know as I only would want to use Illustrator for armature metro map creating and I don't have the money for it.

    • @TerryMahy

    • @counterstrike1110
      @counterstrike1110 Před 9 lety +1

      Terry Mahy It was just when drawing, but I figured it out, my pen had a fill colour of white, I changed it to the one with a red stroke through it and it fixed it, I'm sorry, just really new to illustrator.

    how the heck did you get the lines to automatically be 45 degree angles?

    • @TerryMahy

      Holding shift while you draw them makes them snap to 45, 90 and 180 degrees.

    I can't get 90 degree corners rounded on the inside of the corner in CS6. Thoughts?

    • @TerryMahy
      @TerryMahy  Před 9 lety

      Make sure the shape is selected, you are using the right effect and that the stroke is set to center. Other than that I dunno sorry, I don't have CS6 to replicate the error.
