This week, Kashmir’s division into two UTs will be formal and a Naga peace ‘solution’ will materialize. In episode 301 of #CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta explains how India successfully fights, defeats and co-opts insurgencies by following a bell-curve doctrine.

Hindi isn't my mother tongue yet i speak it fluently. I have no connection with Punjabi yet punjabi songs and bhangra are my favourite. There's a state where my language is spoken and my culture is followed and i am at peace with that. Nation is not about why 'tera' and why not 'mera'. Its about 'na tera' and 'na mera' but 'hum sabka'. Thats how we stay together.

This is one of the best videos I have seen, we usually takes our unity in diversity granted but what we don't realize is that there are people who fought and gave their lives for it.
So we should cherish this and should understand what it actually means and should be proud of it, because it is important.
We all have differences and stays in different places but when someone from some reason of INDIA achieves something, even though personally we don't get anything from that, still we feel happy and feel kind of a satisfaction. If some goes one more step and says his achievement is achievement of nation we feel like we achieved something. Isn't that important?

After that, Nagas declared independence independence on 14 August 19

Research a bit of history before commenting blindly.
Nagas declared on 14 August 1947 to become independent one day ahead of India.
Nagaland is a country with its own government (Federal Government of Nagaland) with its own parliament(Tatar Hoho) with its own standing Army(Naga Army) having its own constitution and Flag.
Nagas helped Indian National Army led by Subhas Chandra Bose when he reach Nagaland, and Subhas Chandra Bose promise when India gets Independent, he promise India and Nagaland would be friendly countries. Even the Father of Nation of India Mahatma Gandhi said, Nagas should be Independent. However the first PM of India Nehru sent Indian Military into Nagaland( a foreign country), then Nehru along with President of Myanmar ( back then Burma) divided Nagaland.
Then both Indian and Myanmar use divided and rule policies
On the Indian side, Nagaland was divided Arunachal Pradesh (2-3 districts), Assam(Areas bordering present Nagaland where Many Naga tribes are divided today), Manipur( 3-4 district) and The state of Nagaland.
On the Myanmar side, Nagaland is divided into 4 parts,
      1. NAGA SELF ADMINISTERED ZONE
      2. Some parts of Eastern Nagaland into Chin State.
      3. Some parts of Eastern Nagaland to Kachin
      4. And the rest into saigang region state.
The present state of Nagaland is but a tiny part of our Homeland.
Fun Fact: Nagaland state under India was the only state under external ministry till 1980s, but India government use intimidating and force the puppet Chief Minister of Nagaland to speak to United Nations to bring the puppet state of Nagaland from external to home ministry.
However, even today Nagaland still has flag, status and position in the Unrepresented people of United Nations and regularly in contact with United Nations and countries around the world.

Takeaway Points from this video By Mr. Gupta :
    1. Be Proud of Indian Govt. - GoI has never allowed secession missions or insurgencies be it Khalistan, Naxalbari, Tamil Eelam, NE insurgency or Jihad in Kashmir to be successful.
    2. Brute Force meets Gandhi's principles - Though Mahatma Gandhi is the Father of the nation and we urge citizens to be SSS (self-styled Satyagraha) and resolving to non-violent methods. However the Government of India won't shy away from dealing rogue elements with an iron fist when the time comes.
    3. Bell Curve based on Hegel's critique of pure reason - The bell curve of India's victory over anti-state elements are somewhat similar to Hegel's theory of thesis and anti-thesis. Hegel stated, if the world is socialist oriented in a state of theis for equality and social welfare then the anti-thesis would replace it when capitalism would be the way creating a consumer based society.
    4. Army vs IB - We all know the methods in which the authority works. Secrecy and withholding information. If Indian Army is the brawns who can flex their muscles and easily flush out enemies then the Intelligence Bureau is the brain which thinks of the future events before those actions take place. Which explains why the ULFA and Maoists are still somewhat active because the lack of a leader can cause reintegration to society a very difficult task.
    5. Sovereignty and Independence are not the same thing: A brilliant example is the hallmark of a great video. Loved the way Mr. Gupta gives the eg. of Poland & USSR. Poland was a sovereign state yet was it truly independent? We all know Moscow was running the counties from the Iron Curtain.
Lastly: India can teach a lesson or two to China and post-broken up territories like Yugoslavia and USSR. The trick to defeat your enemy is not making them feel that you are their opponent by having a big heart and coming to the people's consensus.

Your use of the statistical representation of a "Bell Curve", to describe the pattern of insurgency in India may not be strictly accurate. The concept of the "Bell Curve" in statistics is not used to represent the changing pattern of something - here insurgency - over time. It is rather the representation of the normal distribution of a feature like, height, weight or level of income in a population. Such features in a large population is distributed in the shape of a "Bell Curve" where the largest number of people are closer to the mean and the people with extremely low or high features at either end of the curve. Even though what you said about the natural course of insurgencies in India tend to peak and then fall, and hence is shaped like a "Bell Curve", statisticians will not be using that term for such events which are progressing in a temporal fashion rather than being a static function fixed at a particular time.

Mr Gupta: "Bell Curve" model does not work here. The curve places random data as they distribute themselves within the bell shape: most in the middle, extremes at the two other ends. Typically, how scores in a standardized exam. distribute themselves: highest few at one end; lowest few at the other end, most falling in between. Your use of the model merely as a chronological process does not work. Surely you must have friends in economerics . Consult with them.

Great episode. Great theory. It is known that the balance of power is overwhelmingly in favour of indian state, but what cements it , as Shekar says, is the strong will not to loose even inch and finally accomadate the enemy into the larger indian psyche.
Let me try and add to the theory, even in cases like kashmir the bell curve will work, with an exception that the peak will not slide down quickly but will be a plateau for some time, as long as the enemy foreign state is able to support. Once it weakens, the slide starts.
