Excavating what I thought was an old well. Mistake?

My house was built in the 1950s and we keep finding interesting things. In the woods, on an outcropping, I found some sort of foundation. I thought it could be a well, a spring, maybe even a bunker--it was the 1950's after all. I never considered it would be something more important.
