I remember teachers saying learn the metric system the US will change to it soon. 42 years later only scientists and engineers seem to use it. My kids are still adding fractions.

An important factor not mentioned in the video is the altitude where you will be backpacking. If you backpack in 10,000+ft (3000+ m) country, summer nights can be very cold too. Three-season sleeping bags are necessary.

It would be great to have Miranda travel to some parks around the country and go camping then make a report on tips when someone is going there. We buy gear when we have a plan to use it.
I have a sleeping bag that goes to 0 degrees and I use it for everything, and all seasons. Can get a bit warm in the summer but im always high in the mountains where it is Damn cold. It isn't that heavy either, ive never been to hot before. There have been so many times ive used a 20 degree bag in 30 degree temperatures and ive been freezing, 10 has even failed me a bit. I would recommend going 0. Keep in mind that 0 is usually the lowest you want to go, if you are in 30-15 you will feel great. You notice a difference when its 10 degrees but your still happy
Looks very comfy sitting in the tent.
Another option that has become very popular among backpackers is to use a top quilt made for hammock camping. It's like a mummy bag with no zipper. You'll need a good insulating pad under you, but you'll save a great deal of weight because there's no zipper and the quilt is not made to wrap all the way around you, but cover you like a blanket. The footbox is usually sewn closed similar to a mummy bag, but otherwise it's an open design. This gives you all the room you want to move around, and sacrifices very little warmth, as the insulation under you when you are sleeping in a mummy bag is compressed and not providing much warmth anyway. In very cold conditions, it may not be the best option, because some cold air will come in around the sides.
Yeah quilts are the best comfort and warmth to weight ratio since all the material under you in a sleeping bag is pretty much useless. The main downside is they're usually made to order by small cottage manufacturers, which means they have a lead time and you can't find them in stores making them relatively unknown to new backpackers who walk into gear stores to get outfitted. But I think it's only a matter of time before a bigger company steps into the market and mass produces a quilt. Everyone is lightening their pack weights these days, not just avid section and thru hikers, the traditionally UL crowd and why not? I'll never again carry a zero degree bag that weighs 3lbs or more when I can carry a comparable quilt that weighs like 22oz and costs the same or even less than the bag.

I got the impression from other reviews that the REI Magma 15 looks enormous when packed. Like it would take up half the space of my backpack. Is this so, or is it just me? I´m really concerned ´cause I´m looking to buying one, but if the packed size is that big I´ll be looking for another, more compact model...

What about a video about using quilts vs sleeping bags?
The company Sierra Designs makes some awesome sleeping bags that are built like quilts or have quilt features. These are my favorite because they are a combination of a sleeping bag and a quilt and are perfect for backpacking. I have one of their older models of bags. It's a mummy bag that has a full zipper on one side and a quarter zipper on the other side. The quarter zipper has some extra fabric past the zipper that makes it like a quilt. I love it so much. One of the current models they have that looks like it has a lot of great features is the backcountry bed. It is a zipperless sleeping bag that has a quilt on the upper half that you can tuck into the bag.
@@Erik_withuk That's really neat, I've never heard of that. I normally am in a hammock, but I've been exploring quilt and pad for tent camping just to stay versatile, because some areas aren't allowing hammocks. That and I already put quite a bit into my quilts, so it would be nice to get dual use out of them.

I love these videos, but my only complaint is when she said rectangular bags are too bulky for backpacking. I just don’t like the description being so absolute, even if it’s a common opinion. There were a lot of years when all sleeping bags were rectangular and people still managed to go backpacking. If you are someone who doesn’t like having your feet and knees together when you sleep, it might be worth it to you to have a bulkier, heavier bag.
Just get a quilt, rectangular bags are a waste of weight and space. This is a video about recommendations, not what's possible. You can grab a burlap sack and a wool blanket and go backpacking, if you really want to.

The bag you are talking about has a 50 degree temp rating for men and a 60 degree comfort rating for women.

I have a, “high end “walmart sleeping bag for the summer. Think it is rated for 40 degrees or some bullspit like that. I live in WNC and it works like a champ in June- September. I would never take it out anytime other than legit summer weather.

Down, especially a higher fill power, will generally pack down smaller than a synthetic bag of the same temperature rating
I have been camping all of my life. I live in the woods and let tell you that you do not want to get caught in the snow with a bag that will keep you warm. Back in the 60 all I had nothing but Army bags. How the GI made it in the bad German winter I do not know. They do not tell you about the ones that froze to death. You do not want to get hyperthermic. When down bags came on the market I tried to econmize and I still froze. Finally, I saved enough to buy the best bag available - an artic bag. Now I am warm and happy and do not have to pray for the sun in the morning. But like I said I live in the mountains.
Please clarify - You don't want a bag that WILL keep you warm in the snow? Is it because of sweating?

After some cold trips, I would suggest not believing the ratings and bring a colder rated bag than anticipated. And wet down is useless. If you need to get mold off your fabric soak the bag in white vinegar, one gallon then add water to cover, then launder and dry. I might try a blanket for my summer trips.

True. And if you have a solid tent with a rain fly it shouldn’t really be an issue.
@@rzawilski Exactly! That's why choosing a down bag makes perfect sense! Why would you want to sleep in the rain or in a wet environment anyway?? You should already know the region where you're going and the weather conditions, so find some shelter to sleep under and stay dry or just bring a tent.
@@dcpowered Sometimes if you don't pack your bag correctly, your bag and its contents can get soaked when it's raining out. I think that's one of the more common scenarios where a sleeping bag might get wet.

I have a nf kilo bag 600 fill goes to -01. That being said when youre in the woods the cold is enveloping and breaking the wind and ground covering is more critical and of course a higher 700 plus fill is better and why i use a hammock and a tarp for rain+ snow and only make a windbreak with branches saves time energy and nothin to cleanup or carry out
you ever end up using a sleeping bag liner? is it recommended?
i absolutely recommend it. they can increase the temp rating by like 10 degrees, and it keeps the bag cleaner for longer because your dirty body is inside of the liner not the actual bag. if its too hot outside you can just lay on top of the sleeping bag and only use the liner.

No down sleeping bags for me. Can anyone recommend a good synthetic bag for a beginner backpacker? I've got a Marmot Trestles 20 but its way to huge. takes up all the space in a 50L backpack.

When I'm camping in the summer, i usually use a good light sleeping bag, don't get the cheap ones, you'll regert it. The only good cheap one i got (10 dollars USD) was from another country.
Anti Gravity Gear Stratus top quilt! I live in the southern Appalachians(NC) and use mine from late spring to early fall. 55degree rating and so light its hardly there. $70 bucks!
I wonder how much could you 'add' to sleeping bag warmth by using more clothing?
Adding clothing to the foot of your sleeping bag for example may slightly increase warmth. Wearing effective base-layers in your sleeping bag will be more impactful. Of course overall real-world warmth and comfort in your sleeping bag depends on many variables, including: the type of shelter you're sleeping in, the ground conditions, your clothing, outdoor temperature, weather, and of course your own metabolism and personal warmth preferences. Generally we recommend choosing a sleeping bag rated a little bit lower than the typical low temperatures you anticipate on your backpacking trips.

@@GamerNxUSN not really, you also lose a hood if your comparing it to a mummy bag they dont do as good of a job keeping you warm due to draft, but if you expect that you can do things like adding a cap or buying a wider quilt. it definitely is a choice, i tend to bring a quilt with evenings over forty and a sleeping bag under freezing.
@@GamerNxUSN yeah! you can move around! side sleeping is easier and so is belly sleeping. I was always claustrophobic in a mummy bag. The quilt set me free.

Today I learned that down sleeping bags are filled with feathers. And to think I went through my entire life thus far thinking they were filled with down.

Good point. There's no way to ethically raise something then either kill it or tear out its feathers while disregarding the carbon imprint of raising an animal to take something from it which is usually greater than just making synthetic. Ethically sourced is a term people use to feel better about hurting animals.
Hey guys so all ethically sourced down is a by product from the food industry no big name company would ever kill animals for down or do live plucking. Many company's offer ways to track where the down came from and others will use recycled down. Hope this helped

The EN ratings while “independent” aren’t real standard. Some 0 degree bags aren’t as warm as others despite the same EN rating. Best to use it as a rough guide and then read lots of reviews to see if it’s rating is true.
This is not true, EN is LITERALLY a standard. Do the companies have to follow the EN rating, no (im sure they could be sued if they didnt) , and NO they dont have to claim a maxed out EN rating which is why some 0 degree bags are "warmer" than others. The EN rating is only a threshold as long as the bag passes it then you can claim it, a 0,5,10 degree bag could all claim EN 20 if they wanted to.

I said “aren’t real standard”. Not that the EN system isn’t a standard. If you read reviews from sites that rate bags, have people test them,, etc. some that have EN ratings of 10 are barely good to 20. Others that have a 10 rating are better than some 0 rated bags. I don’t know how they do the ratings for “the standard” but they aren’t real standard. It’s still best to read reviews from backpacking/camping websites and tcheck the reader comments to see what the bag is really good for.

Generally too heavy and too big unless you can find a light one. But if it is light and from walmart it probably won't be very warm

I find this video to have very little info. I use a military 3 stage set up. It's waterproof and can divide into 3 individual bags. Sure, it's 10 pounds but it's worth it's weight in gold especially since its waterproof. Info I was looking for was a down bag that is breathable. Some dude at Feral here in Denver was talking about that...

Finally invested in a down bag, and haven't looked back. Enlightened Equipment probably makes the best sleeping bags on the market, and it's all done eco friendly.
Try a trekking quilt. Changed everything for me, I will never again confine myself into a fabric coffin.
It should be considered:
Down is sometimes produced cruelly. You should ask the manufacturer before buying if he can guarantee that no duck/goose had to suffer
The most important aspect of looking for a sleeping bag is money.
Why dont people ever just buy the Coleman sleeping bags at walmart
They are stored compressed which isn’t good for the loft, making them less warm. It’s important to store them loose especially since they are synthetic. Second for backpacking they are pretty large and heavy, department store bags are good for car camping and glamping. If you’re going backpacking I suggest making sure your bag is 3 pounds or less.

Around 60% of down is thought to be from repeated live plucking in East Asia and Eastern Europe, I don't think "IF" you're worried about animal welfare is a strong enough statement. I'm not a vegetarian but I do find it surprising how many people who love the outdoors seem to be ok with the live plucking and the left-overs from Foie Gras farms.

there are very few ethically sourced down. there are good synthetic alternatives, if not just carry the extra pound for the sake of humanity and environment. down should be banned due to the cruelty to procure. Your videos are great otherwise.
